  1. Looking to purchase a new LED lighting kit and one of the first jobs will require a "flame/fire flicker" effect. Supposed to simulate a campfire. LiteGear has an ok dimmer with this F/X but not sure if the stand alone unit will work other brands of LED lights. Can anybody in the know recommend a LED panel kit other than LiteGear that has this effect? Many thanks
  2. Will soon be shooting some 35mm stills and it's been ages since I've had any color negative film processed. Can anybody recommend a high quality lab the still processes C-41 negative film?

  6. For sale is a Flare Factory 58 with a PL mount. Can include the Canon to PL EOS adapter for extra. I bought this lens last fall primarily for my film, The Crossing. We shot our last scene that called for this lens and money is tight. Must sell. Both are very lightly used. The Flare Factory 58 is a 1967 Russian Helios lens that was completely rebuild by RICHARD GALE OPTICS UK and modified to produce very unique lens flares. As far as I know, Richard's supply of Helios 58mm lenses have dried up and the Flare Factory 58 are no longer made. Wait times were several months. Feel free to give me call at 702.289.9618 or message me here.
  7. Looking to purchase a stereo condenser microphone for recording sound F/X in the field. The most attractive one thus far is the Rode N4. Anybody with the experience, can you chime in on your favorites?
  8. To see a great example of how tilt/shot or shallow DoF was simulated and made a real landscape appear like a miniature or diorama, check out the rowing sequence in Social Network. On true miniatures, you may be able to use an extension tube to shallow-out your DoF
  9. Hello David. I'll have plenty of room to back the LED off and even spread out the throw for wider shots. I just want to be sure to match the actual moonlit shots with my simulated moonlight. The crucial trick is matching the color balance as well as your suggestions or the illusion is ruined.
  10. Going to be shooting an extensive sequence using a Sony A7s II next Friday under direct full moonlight. A reverse angle will have a character situated in a small pocket/cove that is about 5' back. I want to simulate the moonlight using an LED. Does anybody know what combination of gelling one might need to simulate this effect?

  12. The movie The Proposition, from 2005, has some of the best Day-for-Night shots that I've yet seen. I believe the way they achieved these shots was filming in direct daylight with a heavy polarized blue sky that was then essentially used as a blue screen. Then they digitally played in the night sky. This is pretty bad screen grab but it gives you an idea of the look.
  13. I just bought a Sony A7s II (still on the way) that I will attempt to shoot a sequence under a full moon on the 20th of May. It's a long shot of a character walking through the desert carrying a torch. I'll try it several different ways, once at dusk, just on the cusp of darkness with a Red Epic. Then at full dark, with only moon and star light. I fear thought that the torch will be completely blown out using the A7s at 14,000 ISO.
  14. Very curious in Sony's A7 series latest DSLR cameras primarily for their real time 4K video low-light abilities. Can somebody in the know chime in about the low-light abilities (again 4k video) for the Sony A7R II vs the A7 SII? Thank You
  15. I have a Canon 40D in need of a new life and I would like to have it converted as a dedicated B&W infrared camera. Can anybody suggest a first rate service company who performs these conversations? LifePixel comes up tops for my searches but I would like to hear from those in know. Many Thanks! Joe Taylor
  16. https://vimeo.com/100263853 The Crossing - A Short Synopsis The "Crossing" is a tale of desertion, betrayal and retribution set in a post-Civil War American West. In the brutal wilds of the Sonoran desert, SAMUEL CHAMBERS is a desperately wounded youth lost in enemy territory. Pursued by a war party of revenge driven Yuma Indians and worse still, ELI TREATCHER, a vicious, psychopathic madman who Samuel recently rode with during his days with the Glanton gang of government sponsored scalp hunters. After evading the war party, Samuel is soon apprehended by Treatcher, under the pretense that Treatcher, a skilled war medic, is willing to help Samuel remove the arrow from his leg that is slowly poisoning him. An uneasy sense of foreboding develops as it is revealed that Treatcher has far more sinister plans in store for Samuel, who Treatcher suspects, knows the whereabouts of a fortune in buried gold and Union bonds. After a purposely botched attempt to remove the arrow, Treatcher spends the evening terrorizing Samuel with the promise of horrific torture come dawn if Samuel does not reveal the location of the hidden loot. As a new day approaches and Treatcher prepares to slowly murder Samuel, a surprise attack by two members of the pursuing war party leaves Treatcher horribly beaten and disfigured but able to escape the scene after managing to kill one of the attacking indians. With Samuel again hopeless and near death, the lone Indian, MOON, charges the camp but has a sudden and dispiriting change of heart after observing Samuel in such wretched and defenseless condition. After suffering a horrific series of poison-induced visions and nightmares, Samuel awakens one morning to find himself alone in the camp with his leg mended and dressed and his fever broken. Samuel is again abandoned, vulnerable and without any prospects of survival in a hostile landscape. During an agonizing trek through the scorching desert, suffering the scourge of starvation and under constant pursuit from the revenge bent Treatcher, Samuel again comes face to face with Moon, who only days before had demonstrated the ultimate act of mercy and compassion by not only sparing Samuel’s life, but saving it too. For a brief moment, the two share something familiar but are nevertheless still separated by a vast gulf of incomprehension. Moon, the Indian wanderer, turns and once again leaves Samuel wavering in the unrelenting heat. Should Samuel choose to follow, there stands a chance for his survival. If he wishes to go his own way, a certain and agonizing death awaits in the clutches of cruel and merciless desert. Or even worse, at the hands of vile and murderous Treatcher. Samuel’s in a position very few get to be in. That choice is Samuel’s to make. "The Crossing" is being filmed in 5K resolution with the RED EPIC-X. All man-made elements, train tracks, power poles, and to be removed shortly .https://vimeo.com/100263853

  23. In the early 2000's I was the biggest film snob almost to the point of being obnoxious. I bought an Arri 2C and set out to make my 35mm epic: Dead Lonesome Dead Lonesome My dream was to shoot this film and have film prints struck from the original negs ala 'roadshow releases.' That dream never happened and I will be damned if it ever does. Now I have a new dream. To find a good hearted lab who will allow me a generous rate to have my 35mm epic scanned at 2K and if their hearts are really in the right place 4K. Does anybody know where I might find this lab?
