  2. cool! you learn something everytime here @ cinematography.com thanks ya'll for your info, My tests look better & better everytime I shoot. I learn something new everyday here on forums, especially Mr. Mullen, he's great! thanks again, christian
  3. these shows don't originate from 16mm film do they? I watched a behind the scenes to Veronica Mars recently and that wasn't no film camera.
  4. here's a link for 16footage telecined to SD, http://www.posthouse.com/filmprocessing.html but still cant find a link to show 16 to HD or 2k scan! :o(
  5. looking for an image to view that is 16mm telecined to HD! Know where I can view some? Anyone have one? Then the same footage in only SD if someone has a link?
  6. thanks everyone! yah, it gets a little confusing when everyone is spittin different terms out where not everyone agrees with everything. Anywho, screw it!!!! I'm just gonna stick with digibeta right now, then try the 2k direct to hard drive next time when I have a couple Terabyte drives to play with. Right now, I only have a 500gb drive. so it might be tight Any other points???
  7. I've been a beginner with film for about 6 months now, and I agree.... if you dove into doing this show with film, I guarantee you'd screw it up, I've been there. Too much to know for a guy to just start shootin' film on a whim and guessin f-stops, speed of film..and why, speed of camera, etc... I started on DVX100A, GO FROM THERE! Video is a walk in the park compared to film. But it looks less than half as good!!! So I'll share my experiences and failings with ya so you can have a place to start: If at all possible, (and again, moods in regard to lighting is all on a personal taste and method, there's no rule);however, you'll find yourself on safe ground if you aim for f-stopping around 5.6 - 8. So if you're DVX is set on 24p, and you're only gettin 1 f-stop out of the shot, you'd better get some lights up and start blastin em in order to get up to a doable f-stop to work with in the editing phase. For sake of money, go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy 4 of those 1000watt light stands that have 2 lights on them. Then position lights in the room to where your eliminating harsh shadows on sides of faces and so forth. One KEY in decent lighting,......diffuse them. Go to Walmart and get a buttload of white tissue paper, and put a layer or two over (in front) of the lights and doing that will soften the light. This ALONE will increase the quality and appearance of your subject, however, sometimes you want a direct hard light...so, there again, like everyone else said, "this takes lots and lots of time to perfect." Next thing is also KEY to the way your footage will appear videoish and cheap.......make yourself a steadicam for the DVX, and then practice with for getting smoothness. You've just increased your footage quality another 15% if you do it well. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam Again, all this info will only get you a very beginner/intermediate quality production, so don't expect it to even come close to what you see on tv. But you've got to start somewhere. Learn about colors with light!!! Huge!!! Learn about f-stops and aperature with lenses if you haven't already!!! and just go from there man' HOPE THIS HELPS! good luck, christian
  8. OK, I've got it! I've just tested this procedure on my system and it works great: I had some 16mm test footage put into an uncompressed QT on a hard drive (which came off their digibeta Xfer from the film process) then I pull it into Combustion for editing at home then I render it back onto the hard drive uncompressed bring the edited video back to posthouse and put it onto digibeta. Sound good? Only one question.....when they gave me the uncompressed QT, the footage was 720 x 480 (roughly). for 16mm film @ 2k, I expected larger! Is this right?
  9. I read ya! nevertheless, my miniDV route will still be OK for broadcast, wont it? Its shot on 16mm film, so its 2k...which looks great! and as long as I Xfer it to what they need (like digibeta), it should be good...right? thanks aagian, christian
  10. does that single generation to my computer and back really diminish the footage THAT much?? There's another issue here too.......I'm doing effects compositing on some of the footage, you see...animation is really my forte, and thats really goal here. And, I obviously can't afford to get some SGI / digibeta setup. ha! thanks again, christian
  11. thanks everyone for all your opinions and info! its 16mm, not S16. For lack of money, I'm considering this method: telecined directly to miniDV, use my Canon GL2 to bring into my computer, edit on Combustion and render out final project uncompressed, dump back onto miniDV, bring down to posthouse and have them dub onto digibeta for master. Any arguments or advice on this route? thanks again, christian
  12. does telecining film to a QT ..digital format of any kind, always end up being interlaced?? Shouldn't a guy be able to get it uncompressed AND progressively rendered? Or do you have to get a file full of sequence images? I'd appreciate this process being cleared up for me,thanks.
  13. SO, judging by all the posts about whats the best method of getting 16mm footage home for editing...telecined straight to miniDV seems to be the agreed upon choice for best results?!? Then, editing on home computer...then dumping back onto a miniDV tape and then bringing it to a posthouse for a Xfer to digibeta or HD or whatever you want!?! Is this about right? Any tips on what to watch out for along the way?
  14. The little interludes with the explosions...they seem pretty cheesy to me. Maybe just some fade-to-blacks with nice white texts that might make the whole reel a little more seamless. The still B&W photo where you move up on it...I'd just cut it out. It seems like your aspect ratio is off on a couple pieces in the "corporate" section, but maybe its just me..!? However, the first footage shown in "commercials" is great, looks like S16 possibly? And, the stage shots with the guy and chick with underwear...I thought that was a nice little display. Overall, I thought the material was a B+, but the presentation was more like around C-,... if that was smoothed out, I'd give the whole thing a solid B !!! Hope I wasn't too cruel, I just think that honesty makes us the best, and sheepish-fake comments in an attempt to win kindness does nothing but keep us subpar. Hope this helps! Good luck!

    starting out

this is what I did to save a little cash.... I see you've got the C-mount already, now get yourself a C-mount > FD lens mount (the FD lenses that go on Canon still cameras) then I use about 10 different FD lenses on my bolex film camera and its cheaper, and as long as the lenses are good FD lenses like Canon, its fantastic. Just try to stick with Canon though, because some lenses don't want to cooperate due to the color prism issue coming thru some film cameras. but with Canon.... you're safe! Also remember, 8mm wide lens for your film camera will be more like an 18mm lens on the canon, or, normal perspective for the film camera is about 25mm, and the canon lens would be about 40-50mm. Dont know if you wanted to go this route, but its just one avenue to get a variety of lens choices to swap out all day. Good luck man
  16. Any info on this (error 2048) problem would be much appreciated: I've had my 16mm film telecined and Xfered to an uncompressed QT so I can do the video @ home with combustion;however, my computer doesn't seem to want to play the .mov The QT thumbnail says .mov and everything, but when you try to play it in anyway, shape, or form....error 2048 displays, it says, "this is not a .mov file!" The file plays successfully on the company's PC just fine, which is Windows XP Pro, just like mine. Other QT files play just fine. I've uninstalled QT and reinstalled already. I've done google searches about this 2048 error and can't seem to find a remedy. I've proven its not my dvd player's problem. It's not a lack of cpu capabilities or shortage of RAM. I really think it is possibly a component issue or codec issue that my computer just isn't picking up! HELP!
  17. thanks ya'll, looks like DigiBeta is the way to go. Plus, if I want to keep my quality...its really the best way to store things.
  18. I used setting 6 on the camera, which is supposedly still in 24p, its advanced mode not standard.
  19. my bad!....my searches never came up with anything, plus I did thourough research before I bought the DVX100, and I'd never heard of Panasonic making any such model before. At any case, my bad! However, would it be even usable for english, or NTSC for that matter?
  20. this forum is my best guess to where this question should be. Regarding the TV production standards needed for syndication or what not..... what is the medium that tv stations (like BET or MTV) will need for our music video to be submitted and played? D5, DigiBeta, DVD? apparently we ARE getting some play time on BET, but noone has informed us to what format or medium they take it as. Our footage was shot in DVX100, so I need to know how to get it to the proper state for tv! Please help, christian
  21. I'm bringing DVX100 footage into Premier Pro and choosing 24p advanced;however, I notice that it doesn't automatically do any 3:2 pulldown or anything, I'm forced to go to each layer and select "always deinterlace". Still, I'm seeing interlacings and can't get rid of it, AM I DOING ALL THAT CAN BE DONE?? WHATS THE BEST METHOD TO TURNING THE FOOTAGE INTO TRUE TRUE 24PROGRESSIVE????
  22. hvx200 still looks like video......................period! Revolution my butt! There's too many details and particulars about film that video will just never do! The new StarWars was HD, and was a mistake! My $0.02.
  23. footage is pretty good;however, you've got to change your website man'.... its a big bucket of cheese!
  24. other than some of the shots being too underexposed, I like your compositions. maybe could use a few more obectivities other than people to just balance it all out or something.. good job though, TMM
