Zeiss 85mm f1.2 Contax/Yashica problems!
Sean Cheung posted a topic in Lenses & Lens AccessoriesI have a Zeiss 85mm f1.2 (50th anniversary) lens which originally had a Contax/Yashica mount. When I bought the lens it came with an Aaton mount. I want to install an EF conversion mount which I bought from Simmod, but it requires the original C/Y mount to be present, in order for it to attach to and I guess sit at the right height for flange distance etc. I've tinkered with making a shim/spacer out of a Canon lens cap, but it's not exactly as good as a nice machined metal part. And it requires me to find longer screws.. Anyway, my questions would be: 1) What is the correct distance from rear element of this lens to sensor/film plane? 2) Is there a way to source a C/Y mount for this particular lens? (Note it's quite a bit wider at the base than many potential "donor" contax lenses, I know because I've already destroyed a 50mm f1.7 *sorry) 3) Do spec sheets, blueprints, technical data or papers exist in a public domain for this particular lens? 4) Could someone please point me in the direction of a good resource for understanding how the C/Y mechanism works? I seem to have begun my lens *home servicing journey on a rather expensive lens, and I'm pulling a few too many hairs out with anxiety... Many thanks and hello!
Convert Contax Zeiss C/Y to Anamorphic PL?
sines posted a topic in Lenses & Lens AccessoriesLike the subject line says, I am crazy and want to convert my Contax Zeiss set (f2.8/25, 1.4/35, 1.4/50, 1.4/85) to anamorphic PL. How stupid or expensive (most likely, both) is this idea, and who would you recommend to do such an insane task? The FAQ mentioned many anamorphics started out as Zeiss lenses in the first place. Joe Dunton : JDC comes to mind but if you have better ideas, I’d love to hear it. Thanks!
I was wondering if there was any way to convert a C/Y mount to PL mount without a full rehousing. I would love to have a set of MMJ Contax Zeiss lenses in PL mount but so far I haven't seen little to any information regarding this subject. I know it's possible to convert a C/Y mount to M42 so maybe it would be possible to convert it to M2 first, then screw on an M42 to PL adapter which might work on few C/Y lenses but I know for sure the diameter of the particular Contax lenses I want would be too wide to fit inside of the adapter. And I I know It wouldn't be possible to make the flange of the PL mount adapter flush with the flange of the C/Y Mount because the flange focal distance of a C/Y mount needs to be 45.50 mm from the film plane and a PL mount needs to be 52.00mm from the film plane so in theory would need to remove 6.5mm worth of material from the rear of the lens to accommodate for the difference in FFD (Which wouldn't normally be TOO hard), however of course on majority of the C/Y lenses the aperture ring is pretty much right up against the flange of the mount. I guess I could remove the aperture ring but then what? Maybe someone has any input as to how I could possibly pull this off but I believe I've hit a dead end.
Hi All, I'm a new member but have been reading this forum for years. I'm a 25 year old budding cinematographer from South Africa. After fulfilling AC & operator roles across the spectrum for the past years, I've recently had the privilege to land work as a cinematographer and/or director on large release Music Videos & commercials. Basically I want to improve my personal rig to shoot more narrative passion projects. I have a great Contax Zeiss set but it has one problem. When shooting S35 format, the lenses wider than a 35mm don't perform well enough in terms of speed & range. They suit the full frame format well, but I feel I can do better for my personal, passion project rig comprising of a fuji X-t2. After doing a bit of research, I realised that a new Canon FD set might be right for me. I know they're also full frame lenses, but spec wise, they do perform better than the Contax Zeiss's on the wider side of things. I love the look of the K35 lenses and apparently the FD's might be something similar? I'm thinking of starting with the set of 20mm f2.8 24mm f2, 35mm f2, & 50mm f1.2L. In a nutshell, what's your take on using the FD lenses for narrative filmmaking and does anyone have advice on which ones to buy?
Voigtlander MFT vs Contax Zeiss FF
Martin Trabalik posted a topic in Lenses & Lens AccessoriesHello guys, I am in the process of building my kit and I would like to ask for your advice. I want to reach the most cinematic look while maintaining maximal portability and reasonable budget. So far I was using GH5 with 25mm Voigtlander lens and right now I am thinking of either getting also 10 and 42mm to complete my set or going full frame and getting old Contax Zeiss supers. I like how Voigtlanders work with light, but sometimes I feel I could get more filmic results with vintage lenses (for example with my old Hellios that I am sometimes using). I would like to hear your opinion about Contax Zeiss that are highly praised. As far as body goes. I like that GH5 can record 442 10bit internal and don't know about any full frame in the same size and price range that could do same. With modern fast and wide mft lenses, full frame kinda looses it's point, what do you think?

Zeiss Contax for cinema
Phillip Mosness posted a topic in Lenses & Lens AccessoriesCurious about these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Ver-Ex-Modified-Contax-Zeiss-Distagon-50mm-1-4-For-PL-Mount-Arri-Red-/261321787197?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item3cd7fe073d Apparently Contax were designed for still photography but the glass seems to be quite good for motion too. What I have a little trouble with is the wide range in cost of lenses that seem fairly comparable. Why some Zeiss lenses are a couple o' grand, and others are over 10 grand is odd. I'm not referring to a new Master Prime vs. an older used lens. That makes more sense. I'm thinking more older standard speed vs. older standard speed.
