LA Internships for Cinematography
Jacob Mitchell posted a topic in Students and New FilmmakersHey everyone! I will be attending Emerson College's LA campus fall of 2017 and we are required to hold an internship for the semester. My focus is cinematography, and am particularly looking for internships that pertain to it. However, this has so far not been an easy search. Most internships I see are "entertainment" or administrative internships. I'm not worried whether it's paid or not, and certainly do not mind internships that require office duties and tedious workloads. My one desire is to find a place where I can at least learn something about the craft and industry. So far, interning for Shane Hurlbut or Panavision is about the best internships I could find. No doubt I could put in time at a rental house, but I've seen many say that time could be spent better elsewhere. Anyone have experiences or suggestions for finding said internships or any that are cinematography based in LA?
Jacqueline Donaldson posted a topic in General DiscussionHi, I stopped shooting 4-5 years ago due to a sports injury which lead me to working in another field but now I want to start shooting again and I'm feeling a bit behind in the tech, workflow and rusty in my skills. I'm lucky enough to be visiting LA early next year & I'm looking at the ASC Masterclass. I'm concerned it's not really hands on? Is it? Isn't it? I see they're using the Alexa and going through the most current workflows etc but is it mostly learning through demonstration or are we able to get our hands on the tech, lights & set up some shots? Anyone who's done it got any reviews? What did u get out of it? Can anyone recommend an int-adv Cinematography workshop that's very hands on in or around LA? I don't often get over to the US so I'd really like to grab the opportunity. Thanks.
Hey Everyone! This is my first post! I am so stoked to be a part of this community. I just moved in to a sweet new abode with my lady here in LA, and have been enjoying the weather as I just came from a stint in Jackson Hole, Wyoming working on a snowboarding feature called The Fourth Phase. I will be at NAB the 19-21st and would love to meet up with some people! Below is a link to the trailer for the film. Let me know what you guys think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9qWa0Yn6bo Cheers, Seth
Hawk 1.3x V-lites in LA?
Matthew Ballard posted a topic in Lenses & Lens AccessoriesHey guys! I hope you are all doing well. I have a short film coming up soon that will be on the C300 mk1 (due to my film school's availability) and I am looking for some advice on using them with the Hawk 1.3x V-lites. It seems that it should work in theory but have not seen any examples of people doing this in the past. Since the C300 mk1 does not have a desqueeze, I already anticipate having to get a third party monitor (SmallHD?) to desqueeze. Also they seem to be quite a hard lens to track down even here in Los Angeles. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to find this lens for rent? All the best, Matthew
Oleg Zayanov posted a topic in General DiscussionCheck it out - new video on my Vimeo channel! This is a short story about our Trip to Oahu island! It was our first visit to Hawaii. A lot of people think Oahu is pretty boring and they know the only one interesting place there - Waikiki area. But the most beautiful things you can find only out of Waikiki.) We called out trip - «All in 5 days» and I think we've visited most of best places on the island. It was really awesome! Oahu! We love you! And we will back!) John W. King posted a topic in Students and New FilmmakersHello all, I'm an aspiring film director/producer, entering UTA next year as a freshman. I constantly hear that you need to be in LA for the film business, or that everyone ends up in LA, and I wanted to know a little more about this. My question is, why? Why do you need to be in LA? I lived there when I was younger, and all that I remember was that the cheapest dirthole was still more expensive than my modest house in Austin. Also, I've had friends tell me how strict LA is on permits, whereas in Austin, I was shooting on the street w/o any permits and a police cab came up and offered to buy us lunch. So...why LA? I ask this question because Austin's film program is offering students internships at select studios in LA (such as Paramount and Lionsgate) as well as in NYC (but I believe that's more for TV). However, is this something worth looking into? To be honest, and I don't know everything about the industry so this is all coming from interviews/workshops, but the films I want to make I could make probably shoot here in Texas. I would be honored to hear what you guys think and what your experience is with this. P.S.: Money is a HUGE factor for me. Edit: added some line spacing.
Hello, I will be graduating film school in less than two months. I am, of course, an aspiring camera assistant. I am having a hard time deciding where to move after I graduate. The school I attend is located in Florida which has little to no film industry anymore. I have no choice but to move. Based on your experience or knowledge...where would be the best place for me to move to get starting jobs such as Camera PA/Trainee gigs? LA? Atlanta? I know that there is really no right or wrong place to be...I just need a little bit of guidance. Thanks. :)
Best Short Lighting Course
Aaron McLisky posted a topic in Students and New FilmmakersHey guys, I am an Australian filmmaker looking to better my lighting skills. I am self taught and have managed to get decent jobs shooting on digital but am feeling like I need some intensive lighting training, my technical knowledge is very basic. There are no short intensive lighting courses in Australia, can anyone suggest a short (1-3 month) course in LA? Appreciate the help.
Local 728 and Local 52
Hamilton Yu posted a topic in Business PracticesHi, I'm currently a junior studying at NYU. I will be graduating around January 2015 and I am trying to plan for my future afterward. Long term, I'd like to become a cinematographer but I'd like to get there through gaffing because I genuinely enjoy working with lighting. I figure I gotta start getting grip and electric jobs. I am pretty skilled working with most basic to intermediate grip equipment and lights and am able to run power from breaker boxes to distro boxes to lights while adhering to the ring of fire. I'd prefer to join a union as soon as possible in order to get consistent work rather than freelancing too long. I'd love to stay in NYC if possible but it seems pretty difficult to get paying work for legit productions and impossible to get union gripping jobs without being in the union. From what I hear and can tell it is extremely difficult to join Local 52 the NYC gripping union. Alternatively, I could move to LA. Joining Local 728 seems decidedly easier than 52 with lower union dues. Also, from what I hear, it seems much easier to get legitimate production work in LA. Does anyone have advice on how to start gripping in NYC and joining the union? How much easier is it to get work in LA and how difficult is it to join 728? How plausible is it to join 728 soon after film school? Thanks guys.
Coming to LA
Joshua Allen csc posted a topic in Los Angeles, CA (US)Hello fellow filmmakers, I'm a Toronto DP of 13 years experience, and I'm thinking about making the move to Hollywood. I'm trying to meet directors and producers in LA, but if anyone could point me in the direction of where to go to meet said people, I'd be much obliged. Are there any indie film meet ups? Particular opportunities for schmoozing? Also, looking for a place to live once I move there....I was thinking Silverlake or West Hollywood.....any strong opinions for/against? I'll most likely plan a 1-2 month reconnaissance trip in the near future, and I'd love to meet any of you fine folks in person. I'd be looking to pick up a US cell phone as well....any advice as to which are the best service providers would be appreciated....any Canadians make the move down there? I have an iPhone 5s (Rogers), and I'd love to just use it down there with a US sim card, so all my contacts are still in tact. Any suggestions what's the best way to go about this? LA for Zimbabwe?
Matthew Macar posted a topic in General DiscussionHey there I'm the DP on a tenacious short film project set in Zimbabwe without the budget (or balls) to go and shoot there. Team is looking for a colonial style farm house within LA area (90min radius max) that could double for Zimbabwe farm lands. Planning for extensive VFX BG augmentation/replacement, obviously, but a good start would be nice. Any ideas or experience with this?
