  1. Greetings all! I am ecstatic about beginning shooting on Super 8 film. I have been doing 35mm still photography for a little less than a year. I love analog. Super 8 seems like it is going to be a great format for me. I am acquiring a Nizo 148 xl, which has a fixed schneider-kreuznach variogon 8-48mm;1.8 lens. Technical projects I want to work on: Getting an anamorphic rig to work and processing negatives via C-41 protocols and processing reversal film (tri-x). I have already found a great thread about processing tri-x and color negatives should be easy enough. I have seen many threads about shooting anamorphic with Super 8 on this forum, which has been very helpful. Here's what I am worried about: getting the anamorphic lens adapted to the fixed zoom lens on my Nizo. I believe the filter thread diameter on the zoom lens is 49mm. Kowa anamorphics Seem to be good for these small lenses used on Super 8 cameras.I was thinking of getting a Kowa 16-A, which has an outer diameter of about 39mm. They seem to be afordable for me on ebay. The 16H is apparently better, although I am not sure why. I have also thought of getting an SLR Magic, which would need to be stepped down, as the outer diameter is 52mm. Any thoughts, suggestions? What are some recommendations for getting this kowa to work with my Nizo? Good ways to provide support for the lens once fixed to the camera? How should I be calculating aspect ratio and optimum focal lengths to set the zoom lens at? I have seen recomendations, but I'm not sure how these values were deduced. Thanks is advance! This is going to be fun
  2. Hey guys, Looking to gain some insight on a rigging setup for an upcoming shoot. I have a project soon where we're going to be filming some skateboarders, probably from a pickup truck. My goal is to able to both lead them and track behind them, without having to put the truck in reverse. Trying to achieve smooth motion and would love to get low for some of the shots. I was chatting with a DP (Steve Annis) about the rig they utilized for this video: Here is the info I got from him: -all filmed out the back of a pick up truck with vibration isolator and tango head -for tracking shots: small wooden low platform on the front supported by scaff bars with Boss plate fitting He wasn't able to provide any set photos of the second rig. Does anyone have any pics of something similar? Haven't had any luck online. Just trying to wrap my head around it. Going to also reach out to a couple key grip's I've worked with. Also any idea of what this could be done for budget-wise would be helpful. Budget is low but most of it will go towards a good, safe rig to execute some of these shots. Thank you! -Ben Joyner Some frame grabs from the video:
  3. I wanted to ask a quick question about a name, or the on-set shorthand name, for a particular rig (or if there even is a name for it). I’m a film professor now, but I worked in the industry for 17 years and it’s really bothering me that I don’t have an answer for this, so I was hoping someone could help me out. Basically, it’s rigging an object so that it’s fixed in front of the lens and throughout the shot, whether it’s rigged onto a camera offset plate (Ubangi) or attached to a gobo arm, etc. I’ve enclosed example images of the fixed gas can shot in Breaking Bad. While it has similarities to a SnorriCam or an affixed camera, it’s obviously neither. I’m writing a few academic articles about the show and they use this rig often enough that I would like to address it correctly (and quickly with a proper noun). Thanks so much.
  4. Hello. Would like to get some feedback on good/affordable gears for 16mm film lenses, mostly for BMPCC. I own a BMPCC , Schneider and Kern Primes. Looking for : => A good CAGE I own this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMPC-Cage-Top-Handle-Grip-15mm-BMPCC-for-Blackmagic-Pocket-Camera-support-system-/261534271701?pt=UK_Photography_Movie_Camera_Accessories&hash=item3ce4a848d5 , which scratches the body a bit when in and out, too heavy and annoying to do Steadicam work. Thinking to get the Varavon (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261398476332&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en) as Tilta is quite pricey although people say it's great, I never tried. THe good on the Varavon seem is that it looks light as per designs, but sill the Clamp is too high so in the Steadicam is hard to balance, so I might use one in my shoulder rigs that might be 2/3 of the height. I'm looking for a good one that is practical and fits well, if any other suggestion please let me know. => Good adaptable RINGS for follow focus. Still couldn't find small than 50-60mm (like this 60mm: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=281387086694&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en) as the barrel of the kerns are ridiculously small (25mm wide). And I'm not sure if the 60mm would fit a Schneider barrel of 45mm for example. Any experience/Ideas of rings? Any other tips around BMPCC gear and accessories, just put in here. Thanks guys.
