Morgan Havet Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 Hello, At my company, we are currently thinking of buying a better quality camera and lenses. We currently have an FX3 and we're thinking of getting a Sony Burano with the new DZOfilm Arles range. We would aim for a budget of USD 50,000. We're also thinking of adding a Ronin 2 stabiliser as our RS2 won't be able to handle the weight of the Burano. We mainly shoot documentaries and fiction, we also have a project with Netflix so we want our camera to be Netflix-approved. Occasionally, we shoot commercials. Do you think a Burano with DZO Arles lenses is a good choice? I have also heard that the built-in ND filter in the Burano has a serious IR problem... Since we're based in Cambodia, where it's sunny and 35°C every day, I think we'll have to deal with that problem... We also want to stay a small crew, meaning 1 or 2 people operating the camera. Thanks for your feedback!
Sérei Ouk Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Hi Morgan, Don't know if you had any answers since then but I used the Burano a lot recently and found myself loving it. If I can only have one AC and the budget isn't allowing me to get an Alexa, I choose the Burano these days. On a fashion project I paired the camera with the DZO Arles and the image was beautiful. I was especially surprised by the bokeh rolloff when wide open so I can't not recommend you the combo. If you're interested to see the results, I can show you some stills or footage. You can't go wrong with the Ronin 2! About the internal ND, I personally never had an issue so would love to hear what people told you about the ND. Funny that you're based in Cambodia, I'm a half french half cambodian cinematographer based in Paris haha. Let me know if you have any questions! Cheers, Sérei OUK
Robin Phillips Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 one thing you might consider, you can get a good condition set of Ultra Primes in the 20-25k USD range these days. just something to consider.
Albion Hockney Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 For documentary I know the C400 is also a new contender and something to look into. Also the Fx6 is hugely popular and I wonder how the image from fx6 compares to the Burano after color grade. can't speak to the lenses! with lenses just make sure to buy something you think will hold value—that way you can always resell if you need/want something else. I think ultra primes are pretty out of fashion other then for wide angle work, but maybe they will come back and be worth a fortune one day.

Cheers, Sérei OUK Hello bong, it's even funnier because I am French hehe. Thanks for your answers. I think the IR pollution comes up when we push the internal ND a bit far, which can happen often in Cambodia. I would love to see the results yes! You can DM me or share some stills/links here. Merci !
