Premium Member Matthew W. Phillips Posted August 25, 2006 Premium Member Share Posted August 25, 2006 I'm not 100% about this but I think the resolution is the same with both. I think the main difference is that DVCAM is a bigger, better quality tape so there is less drop outs and archiving is a bit safer.
Brian Drysdale
The difference in the tape speed: DV runs at 18.81mm/sec while DVCam runs at 28.215mm/sec. There's no difference in resolution and you can record using MiniDV tapes in DVCam format cameras like the DRS570. The PD 150 has the option of recording on either format - the recording time is shorter on DVCam. Both use 25Mb/sec. Although I suspect the higher tape speed would make DVCam less prone to drop out, this format's tapes are thicker than DV tapes, making them more robust for VT editing. Premium Member Dan Goulder Posted August 26, 2006 Premium Member Share Posted August 26, 2006 DVCAM timecode is locked to the frame. Mini-dv timecode can sometimes drift by a frame. This can be a potential problem if you're using the mini-dv format for offline editing while desiring a perfectly frame-accurate EDL. "Frame-locked" audio with DVCAM vs. "unlocked" audio with mini-dv is another difference, although I don't know if that ever creates a perceptible problem.
