Christian Blas
Can films be shot on Super-8 and be nominated for an Academy Award, if transferred to 35mm? The only movie I know nominated (with super-8 footage) for Academy Awards is 'JFK'. Is there something that determines this in the rules of the Academy Awards? Premium Member Kevin Masuda Posted February 7, 2007 Premium Member Share Posted February 7, 2007 I'm sure if the story was captivating and was a critical success, and the film was shown in nationwide theaters on 35mm, had maybe at least one known actor, then yes it probably could. Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted February 7, 2007 Premium Member Share Posted February 7, 2007 There is no format restriction, although the only movie I can think of that was not primarily shot in 35mm or 65mm that got an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography was "City of God" (mostly shot in Super-16.) Premium Member Alessandro Machi Posted February 7, 2007 Premium Member Share Posted February 7, 2007 For a Super-8 film to ever be elegible I presume it has to play in a theatre at least a of couple of times. The only way I could see a Super-8 film transferred to video ever being nominated is if it had an amazing soundtrack/story. I never saw Blair witch but I recall reading that there were long sequences where one DP's beautifully low light BW grainy shot could be another DP's waterloo, the soundtrack carried that film along. Leo Anthony Vale
I never saw Blair witch but I recall reading that there were long sequences where one DP's beautifully low light BW grainy shot could be another DP's waterloo, the soundtrack carried that film along. There were no beautiful low light B/W grainy shots. For some idealistic romantic reason I was expecting to see mediocre at best video transfers intercut with snappy B/W negative. What a fool. The B/W was a mediocre video transfer transfered back to film. So ugly video noise and edge enhancement instead of beautiful film grain. Can films be shot on Super-8 and be nominated for an Academy Award, if transferred to 35mm? The only movie I know nominated (with super-8 footage) for Academy Awards is 'JFK'. Is there something that determines this in the rules of the Academy Awards? I think documentaries now have to be on a projectable video format. But don't quote me on that. I don't get enough pooter time to verify that. Edited February 7, 2007 by Leo Anthony Vale
