Just spoke to Creative video in the UK this adapter costs £3520 PLUS VAT add in the cost of the camera £5630 Makes this quite an expensive set up. Nearly £10,000 Or in American money $20,000 You could buy a Red camera for that. Thats surely way overpriced?

You'd have to add the import duty to the cost of the RED to compare like with like in the UK. Although, traditionally prices in the US are lower and the current exchange rates could make buying there worthwhile. Just be aware of any warranty issues if importing camera kit from the US and remember you're supposed to pay import duty & VAT.

I really like the idea of this adapter, but they go and ruin it by overcharging. Yes I know its a free market out there and this is specialist kit. But surely this is peripheral to the camera itself, and that is the bread and butter product and not about making a lot but ultimately a little on the adapter is a sure way of sending customers to buying the red.

You can't make judgements until you know how much of the extra costs are the import duty. Also, you're not really comparing like with like because you can only currently buy a RED from RED in the USA, there aren't any dealers etc involved to adding to the cost of purchase.

You can buy the adapter in the USA and import it yourself, companies like FedEX will sort out all the customs and duty payments. That or fly over and pick one up in person, the price seems to be around $4,400 or less, but remember to sort out any sales and state taxes which might come on top of the quoted prices.

You could also ask for a better price from the UK people, just quote them how much it'll cost you to import (the headline figure you see in the US ads exclude taxes and you'll have import duties and freighting costs) and ask if they'll match the price.

I think we've been here before with this topic in another thread.

Yes I agree Brian and it is an option to buy the adapter from America and import it.

Are selling it for $3825 Although I don't know whether this would be a good company? or not. I still think its overpriced though.

You could argue development costs etc but in my opinion with the new sony xdcam ex. Pana HVX200 and the red this is the reason to go with the JVC so they really need to compete and with the JVC-HZ CA13U combination. It does offer an alternative to these cameras although the sony will have 1/2" chips and so will have a shallower dof anyway. I would have thought a price tag of about $3000 Dollars and £1500 would have been better for it. However who am I to judge? A thing is only worth what its worth to the person buying it. I guess the price may drop nearer the xdcam ex and reds foray into the market place.

Guess my Zeiss lenses will have to stay in their box for now.

Price wise JVC don't currently need to respond to RED, however, they may do so once that camera gets out on the market in reasonable numbers.

The Sony XDCAM EX is a camera of interest; Millimeter magazine voted it #1 at NAB (RED was #2). Although, if this camera as large as it looks in an online video I watched, the new Sony is getting beyond the handicam out front style of operation. It would be good if you could move the V/F from the rear to the front to allow on shoulder operating. Although, I suspect it's coming out because of Discovery's (and other broadcasters) demand for a better format on small cameras than HDV for HD documentaries.

However, if you've already have 16mm Zeiss lenses and you wish to use them on the type of productions that demands their use, the choices are limited to the JVC in one band and the upcoming SI-2k or RED cameras in another, with the SI Mini as the inbetween option.

My guess is Sony are bottom of the heap and need to catch up.

Its been said some of the better lenses for the JVC are on a similar level to the zeiss primes and my guess is the Sony will have a great fixed lens.

Because of this and the 1/2" chips and the functionality it will actually be the best option at its level. Beating the red and the SI-2K. Especially if they reach a consumer price point. However at this moment in time I would be tempted by the JVC if the price was right regarding the adapter. And even then I would probably think later why didn't I wait?

Its in JVCs interest to get their camera either updated to flash cards and 4:2:2 or to start a price war and become the dominant frce much like VHS did with betamax.

People always put off buying to wait for the next thing if they don't have an immediate requirement, there's nothing new in that. People looking for a JVC HD100/200 series camera are in a different market to the RED. JVC are already in a niche, since they use HDV1 rather than HDV2 used by the other manufacturers.

I expect Panasonic will be doing the anti Sony XDCAM HD moves rather than JVC. How good the new Sony's functionaly is remains to be seen, I can see there being issues that have to be addressed, since the Z1 isn't great in some aspects of its design.

The XDCAM EC doesn't do 4:2:2, however, the upcoming 2/3" XDCAM HD camera is expected to be 4:2:2.

Sony intros flash-based XDCAM EX

Sony launched its efforts at the NAB video expo today with the XDCAM EX, a new budget pro video camera that marks one of the company's first high-end cameras with movement-free storage. The new XDCAM records raw MPEG-2 video at up to 50Mbps 4:2:2 to flash memory by using the faster ExpressCard 34 format found in modern Mac and Windows notebooks. Sony's own SxS high-speed cards can store up to two hours of HD video on a 16GB card (8GB will also be available) that can then be transferred to a portable in the field. Video is recordable at a full 60Hz in either 1080i or 720p with 1080p possible at 30Hz or a film-grade 24Hz.

The company hasn't revealed a specific release date for the three-sensor camera or its SxS storage format, promising only that both will sometime in September. A Blu-Ray based PDW-F355 recorder with 50GB of storage will arrive along with an external deck and optical recorder at approximately the same time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sony will be top dog in the high end consumer format again and VERY soon.

The new Sony EX camera only records up to 35mb/s, so it can't do 4:2:2. This is the same position as on the currently available XDCAM HD cameras.

However, you can record 50mb/s on XDCAM HD using 4:2:2 and this will be available on the new 2/3" camera.

The Camera isn't built yet but my guess is they will implement 4:2:2. However even if they don't and stick with 35mbs they have a great codec and its picture quality will be that of an XDCAM with half inch chippers lets face it its gonna blow the competition out of the water and enable the consumer to make TV grade films.
