where to get gels

Is there a place to get cto and ctb gels online? How much do they typically cost. I found one set online for over 100 dollars. That can't be right, I've purchased gels before and they were less than 10 dollars (from a theatre supply store)

$100 a roll sounds like a good price actually. It should be around $7 - $10 a sheet.

I'm a fan of the Expendables Recycler, they're hawking partial rolls left over from larger productions, check out www.expendablesrecycler.com. They've got the best prices I've found, somewhere around 1/2 of what gels cost new.

Those sheets are smaller (12x10), the ones I am talking about (the standard size I have always seen) are 21x24.

Personally, the Full CTB and the 1/4 CTO tend to be the ones that I use the most when using tungsten lights. However, I always take the full range.

 

You can always double up on the 1/2 CTB gels if you can only afford one grade.

I'd lean toward rolls or sheets of just 1/4 and 1/2 of CTB and CTO. You can have the full range just by doubling up the gels. Sme DPs prefer straw instead of CTO. You'll also need ND and some diffusion as well. B&H Photo in NYC is also another online source for sheets.
