Dan Salzmann
Yes flares generate fumes that contain highly toxic heavy metals. Ventilation is of extreme importance when using them. They are not at all designed for use on a closed set.
Rolfe Klement
You sure about the smoke? I didn't see any warnings and it smells like NOX - which is obviosuly dangerous but no more then being in a pub filled with cigarette smoke thanks Rolfe
Premium Member Walter Graff Posted November 3, 2007 Premium Member Share Posted November 3, 2007 Traditional incendiary flares are extremely toxic and the reason why those that use them such as law enforcement agencies have all switched to a non toxic version including LED versions and non toxic incendiaries which will be clearly labeled as such. You are taking serious long term health risk playing with flares unless they are the newer non toxic version. In fact the term safety flare is an oxymoron because they are neither safe nor environmentally friendly. I would not subject myself or any actors to anything other than safe flares which you can purchase online if need be. Reminds me of the smoke cookies we used to use. They were as bad as safety flares in terms of the chemical soup they emitted. Yet no one ever put a label on them or thought anything of it until someone looked and saw that they caused everything from birth defects to cancer. DOn;t take chancs on your long term health. It's not worth it.
