PumphouseOutdoors Posted October 7, 2007 Share Posted October 7, 2007 Forgive me if there are already responses to these questions but I ran a search and didn't fine what I was looking for so here they are. I just purchased an XL2 with several additional goodies. I'm using it to record hunting trips all over the country and have hit a couple setup snags. 1. XL2 LENS: When I start up the camera, my 20x Canon florite lens that comes w/ the camera makes 2 or 3 relatively loud clicking noises as it settles itself. Now the lens appears to be working just fine, but that initial clicking concerns me for 2 reasons. First, is it supposed to do that? Second, sort of hard to film a Monster Whitetail 10 yards away from you when you start your camera and it clicks 3 times... 2. AUDIO SETUP: I purchased an Azden wireless receiver and two wireless transmitters for my hunters to wear. My goal was to use the Front Mic to capture ambient noise and my wireless mics via the rear XLR jacks to capture audio from my hunters. No matter what configuration I use it just doesn't work. I would like to get ambient on CH 1/2 from the front Mic and individual audio from hunters on 3/4. I set up AUDIO 1 to Front Mic and AUDIO 2 to Rear and no luck. Do I have to use an MA-300 and a different mic to acheive 4 separate audio channels? I've tried 12 and 16 bit, manual settings / auto...HELP!!! I can get the wireless mics to work fine or the front mic, but not both simultaniously. I thought that the camera could record 4 separate audio tracks...am I missing something? any guidance anyone can provide would be great. The lens is full of electronics and mechanical parts just waking up and stretching. There's a better technical answer, but the main thing is, it's not broken. LOL as for the battery, I have two of the long life batteries and the charger (CH-910 I think), that can be attached and run w/ both batteries for about 10 hours total run time...so yeah, I think that might be the plan. I just didn't think that was good for the camera to just stay on running like that... Got a 445am appt in the trees tomorrow morning, we'll see how the setup works. thanks again! I'm confused, it's either all bad or all good, no? By the way, congratulations on getting the rear camera audio inputs to work properly. I reviewed the Canon XL1S camera for a magazine several years ago and I could not get the back inputs to work either. Because I was reviewing the camera I had to make extra certain that it was not working so I had to spend a significant amount of time verifying it wasn't working. It was a very early release, almost a prototype and apparently the back input channels did not work and that was confirmed by Canon, it probably gave them heads up on the problem so it wasn't all bad. The problem was in the menu setup for audio. I had it on 12 bit, but didn't have the 1/2, 3/4 selection for 12 bit. as soon as I got that right, the rear's work like a charm. dog fighting vs. hunting? Not sure Vick was feeding his family w/ the dogs...but that comparison is a discussion for a completely different forum. thanks for all the comments... Chris Durham Posted October 8, 2007 Share Posted October 8, 2007 Regarding Question 1, I believe - and I'm not at home to check right at the moment - that those clicks don't happen coming out of standby, just when you turn it on. If you're concerned about the noise, try leaving the camera on and going into and out of standby which I think is silent. I'll check this tonight to see if I'm right or not. Brian I think it would have been nice if you had made a better distinction in your original topic question. Videotaping hunters trying to kill something for sport or to mount on the wall of their home as a trophy is about the lowest form of cinematography I can imagine being a part of and one that I would not hestitate to chastize anyone who partakes in it.
