Premium Member John Hoffler Posted February 11, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted February 11, 2008 Hey everyone, this upcoming weekend I will be shooting a student film in which the climax is a long foot chase sequence. I have been storyboarding this with the director and was wondering if anyone knew of some really well shot chase sequences that I could reference for some more inspiration. thanks, John Hoffler
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted February 11, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted February 11, 2008 "Point Break", "Narc", and the new "Casino Royale" have good foot chases in them. There are some good foot chases in "Raising Arizona" too, though not usually two people, one chasing the other, just one person fleeing.
Premium Member Chris Keth Posted February 11, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted February 11, 2008 There is a good one that takes place in a Roman coliseum in France in Ronin.
James Steven Beverly
Is this on foot or in cars? The KINGS of car chase scenes are Bullitt and The French Connection. If it's on foot, The French Connection has some good stuff as well. B) Edited February 11, 2008 by James Steven Beverly
James Baker
The Third Man (1949) Charade (the original) The Truth About Charlie (the Charade remake) District B13 Insomnia (the logjam foot chase in the Al Pacino remake of the original film)
Premium Member John Hoffler Posted February 11, 2008 Author Premium Member Share Posted February 11, 2008 Its good to wake up to some responses, thank you very much! And to answer your question Steven, the chase is entirely on foot. I wish I could shoot a "French Connection"-style car chase!!! Maybe I can build a DIY car mount?!?!?!?! I'd watched Point Break's chase last night, as well as Casino Royale. I've never seen D13, but I heard there is a some crazy free-running like in Royale. I also watched the chase between Kevin Spacey and Brad Pitt in Se7en. I'll definitely check out these others.
Ken Minehan
have a look at Bourne Ultimatum. It has a great chase sequence. ken
Tom Lowe
"Point Break" is the gold standard for foot chases, IMO.

They're not all that hard to build, Bud, I answered a thread a while ago on building a hostess tray and posted a bunch of pics. http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...amp;hl=Carmount I was planning on building one myself sometime this year. You could just put the camera in the back seat pointed though the windshield for the diver's POV, stick the camera in the back of a pick-up for the front views of the chase car and have some drive bys for the rest. Put a camera on the hood and put the car on a tow bar or tow dolly for the driver's reaction shots, Throw in a couple of near misses, knock into a couple of metal trash cans, add a couple of "Oh poop" moments, Under-crank the whole thing by 30% and Whola, you're William freakin' Friedkin! Premium Member Hal Smith Posted February 13, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted February 13, 2008 Speaking of car chase scenes, I've always liked the shot in "Grand Prix" where they started the Ford GT40 camera car (driven by ex-World Champion Phil Hill) at the back of the grid in an actual, not staged, Grand Prix race (I think Spa). All the other race shots look like typical movie race scenes, very organized and pretty. The shot from a real race looks like the end of the world. Cr*p is flying everywhere, cars are dodging each other, there's a haze of oil and rubber smoke, etc. Not pretty but thrilling for those of us who have been real racers. Yes, children, there was an era when Hollywood made films that were the Real Deal, Ford GT40 camera cars in Grand Prix races, huge car crashes with real cars (Blues Brothers), and Shelby prepared Mustangs (Bullitt) rat racing on the streets of San Francisco. Eat poop CGI.
Sean Conaty
what about Buster Keaton's "The General"? The whole film is a chase sequence.
Warwick Hempleman
"Marathon Man" has a good foot chase. "Run, Lola, Run" isn't exactly a chase scene, but has a lot of good coverage ideas. "Blade Runner is nice too, but probably not much help in this case :)
Bob Hayes
Crank has a lot of really hip and edgy running sequences.
Simon Roel
How come nobody mentions "Apocalypto". Great setting for running and excellent cinematography by Dean Semler using the Genesis. Maybe "Point Break" used to be the benchmark standard for chase sequences...
