Premium Member Simon Wyss Posted November 24, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted November 24, 2008 Glen, in all respect: I believe we can drop that obsolete thinking of Where Is it Cheapest ? Economy works only when all participants have their just share. It is true that many products are sold at too high prices but not services. To me there is a world of difference between a vacuum cleaner (product) and a hair cut (service). Now at a movie film lab the two come mixed. The customer gets a product, footage, and at the same time inherent services from timing (if any) or special original processing over synch work to projection. Let's try to approach it from the other side. What Do I Get for My Money ? We have always gone further that way, and it's been my offer since we started regular business on November 1st, 1999. Fixed price and a variety of possibilities. You could have your stock treated after any desired formula. As an example, Eastman Kodak D-76 or D-96 need not be panacea. There are almost forgotten recipes like the iron oxalate of 1877 by Mathew Carey Lea, simplified by Joseph Maria Eder in 1879. I have tried it with different black-and-white stocks, even on the modern Gigabitfilm, with astonishing results.

Anyway, there is a Van Gogh exhibition now in Basel. To improve on your German, read some, but not Goethe. He was a drunkard. Friedrich von Schiller is the one.
Guest Glen Alexander

Guest Glen Alexander
Ich mache nur Schwarzweiß. For more saturated colors why not go Fuji negative - Eastman positives. Edited November 27, 2008 by Glen Alexander

Guest Glen Alexander
Glen's German is indeed hilarious. Versteht. Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted November 28, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted November 28, 2008 Luxembourg, which worst Französen has I ever heard. Nothing comes from Luxembourg except the bad French language. Speak the optics give they me large laughter. Remain to the topic or post elsewhere. Understands I like it in german. . .makes it even more interesting in bablefish! :P I can see tim's point, though Glenn. I can understand some other languages, just sadly not german (which would make dealing with arri so much cooler!) edit: can we at least have some translation of some of the important bits? Like what labs are the best in price/performance scenarios, if we ever get there?

If you've ever been there or driven through I have many times to get to Netherlands and Germany. The French is absolutely horrible. It makes the French from Marseille tolerable. You speak of optics I get great laughs. you have to put the subject back at the beginning "sie". Simon hasn't posted any rates for his lab, we are talking about cost/quality, and more personal items. Lowest lab so far in Technicolor Thailand .77ft for answer prints on kodak stock.
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted November 28, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted November 28, 2008 That was just what "babelfish" popped out from a copy and past. I keep meaning to learn German, if only to better understand certain warning labels. Most of my time in the EU of late has been spent in Italy, and I learned when I was first there in 2000-- driving in Italy is. . .well yes. . . Perhaps one day I'll hit through Luxembourg, I actually have wanted to go there from time to time. I would think that Thailand would in the end cost you more for shipping/insurance as opposed to keeping it close to home? Also insurance?

Premium Member Simon Wyss Posted November 28, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted November 28, 2008 Glen, our stinky lab is closed. I want to leave Europe behind me, everybody is asleep here. The french professional cinematographers forum for example is half dead, not a post in weeks. In America people react, give answers, throw mud at you, at least one is alive. It's now only to know how to attract customers among 13 other labs in Hollywood.

Premium Member Max Jacoby Posted November 28, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted November 28, 2008 Glen is saying that he didn't shoot on Fuji, Kodak or Agfa, but a German stock that has never been used for cinema. And he is right, many Luxembourgers speak French with an accent, but they are not nearly as bad as he is at German ;) Myself I don't like French at all, I had some traumatic encounters with French Grammar in school and much prefer English and German. Premium Member Simon Wyss Posted November 29, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted November 29, 2008 How could I possibly insult Americans when I've never been there. Also I should never have wanted to blame Europe but, you know, this is the old world with still widely spread mind control of roman-catholic origin or other provenience. Don't fear for me. I have several producers-friends who appreciate how I treated them. Bad examples of movie business people are almost always cine aliens like a lawyer Head of Archive or a manager Head of Museum. These career changers gave me hard times. I'd never even dreamed of founding an enterprise without sound knowledge of basics. At one archive the responsable person for the collections is not aware of the simple legal situation about a film or an equipment depot. I'm not going to complain, it's plain depressing. And now for something completey different, a nice cup of coffee.
Guest Glen Alexander
H'Wood runs on fear. Europe is a hodgepodge of loose associations that make it very difficult to get small productions made. The amount of paperwork is equal to the amount of film you shoot. Just so Keith W. doesn't feel left out, Australia tries but have become a cheap place for US productions. Ask why does Melbourne substitute for Texas? It doesn't, but they speak english... sort of.. Premium Member Paul Bruening Posted November 30, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted November 30, 2008 Two semesters of German. Two of French. Four of Chinese. One of Arabic. And a smattering of Hebrew. I can barely remember any of it. Use it or lose it. I can speak redneck quite fluently. Does that count?
