Salil Sundresh
What are the most commonly used motion picture film cameras these days?
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted November 19, 2010 Premium Member Share Posted November 19, 2010 Arri cameras, from the BL4 up to the most modern ones, as well as Panavision Systems would be the most used. A great way to see what's out there is to follow the rentals, which'll lead you primarily to Panavision, Arri CSC as primary rental houses for a lot of productions. And, aside, there are really only 3 manufacturers for new film cameras these days, Arri, Aaton, and Panavision. Aatons, while great little cameras, don't seem as used as their Arri and Panavision counterparts, at least here in the US, though here and again you'll see them around, especially as they are a "cat on your shoulder," or very good (probably the best) hand-held. Jean-Louis Seguin
If you mean cameras used in "professional" Hollywood-type productions only, then Adrian's answer seems logical. However, if you mean all types of usage, the most commonly used motion picture film camera is most likely the various models of super8 cameras followed by the Bolex in 16mm. cheers, Jean-Louis

James Steven Beverly
Lots of indy guys who want to own their own equipment like myself go with Commiecams (Eastern Block Soviet equipment) which is surprisingly good quality and relatively inexpensive, Kinor 35mm and Konvas (all of which are 35mm) are the most popular and in 16mm the Kinor 16mm and the KRASNOGORSK-3 which is a cool little wind up camera. The Lomo lenses are very good quality and unfortunately being snapped up by RED guys which has kinda screwed up the price but they are still affordable. These cameras were made right up til the collapse of the Soviet union so some are from the late 80s and early 90s. With upgraded electronics, they are terrific cameras. Arri BLs 1, 2 and 3 have come down though and can be had for as little as 5 grand on occasion, so that's not too bad either.
