I have decided to invest in a super 16mm camera. I am specifically interested in the Aaton XTR Plus (not prod). I would love to hear pros and cons from those of you who have used it before or hersay about the camera.

What is the difference Beetween XTR and PLUS, I have only used LTR and XTR PROD, the latest one, is very good cam., Specially lithium batts and cam electronics menu, very very easy, easier than SR3, I still prefer ARRI's.

Cheers

Hey Nathan...couple of quick questions...

Doesn't every Aaton camera with a Magnetic Drive have a side display?

Or is it just the XTRPlus and XTRProd?

If the XTRProd boost the swappable fibrescreen groundglass

Does that mean you can't remove the ground glass on the other Aatons?

What's so great about the Tri-phase motor?

Finally what the hell does >8) mean? I ain't down with da lingo... :)

Anyways catch you soon take care man.

Howdy Rik,

Negative. The original XTR had no display. Also there are a bunch of 54LTRs that were upgraded to have a magnetic drive with no display, but there were a few upgraded to have a display.

What's so great about the Tri-phase motor?

Better power consumption, more efficient and higher speeds.

Not without training and tools. You'd have to remove the mount (well if it were PL, if it's in Aaton you can remove the tab on the mount to turn it and leave the mount in tact), the top handle, the base and the front housing as well as the lens spider being mindful of the pellicule. Then you'd have to close her up again making sure that the FFD was still good and then you'd need to set the frame centering and screen focus assuring that what you see in the viewfinder is what the films sees. Luckily, with the cameras below the prod they have a pretty generic ground glass that will fill most needs and can be switched in and out of S16 by loosing a screw in the mount and sliding the ground glass left or right.

Finally what the hell does >8) mean? I ain't down with da lingo...  :)

It's a smile, with glasses... sideways.

Hey, if you see Roy anytime soon, let him know I send my regards.

Nathan if Aaton is gathering a wish list for the future.

One of mine would be a firewire out port from the video assist.

Recording the picture to DV.

I work with a couple of directors who like to record the video assist to make sure they are getting the performance and coverage they want.

And could be used as a quick and dirty laptop edit while on set, helpful on the slim budget film.
