Rokinon and DSLRS

Recommended Posts

The last lens I purchased was Rokinon's 35mm Cine, and I love it. I got it for around $400 and for that price I don't think it can be beat.

I'm thinking about picking up their 85, and really holding out for a 50.

Anyone have any thoughts on roki glass?

Rokinon are pretty great. Duclos will soon be offering a service that strips coatings from certain elements to give very unique flares. They'll sell them already modified, or modify your existing set.

Nice! I will have to check them out.

Well Ben, if you like the lens, and c'mon the price is pretty damned affordable, then what does it matter? Use the lenses you like and suit your needs, aesthetics, and budget.

Very true haha. Sad thing, however, is that I am on a tight budget... So picking up new glass is an event for me, and as impulsive as I am, I have to stop myself from buying a full set. I do think the 85 might be my next purchase, although I might hold out for Canon's 70-200

Were it me (and i am actually looking @ Rokinon as well) I would try for a full set of them. However, I would start on the wide end. It's often much easier to move in closer with a wider lens than it is to back away. I'd hold out for a 50mm and then go to something like their 24mm (i think it is?).

For narrative Super-35mm sized work, the 35mm focal length really is a workhorse, so you've got yourself covered there. I would say then, it's much better to go wider from a 35 then longer to an 85.

As for zooms. Meh. not a big fan, and for one I'd rather had a set of lenses which'll all be similar than start to match dissimilar lenses together.

The Rokinon glass is really great solution for many image-makers. They have a really unique place in lens market - super affordable, super wide options (8mm, 14mm, 24mm) and one of the greatest advantages is they are geared and de-clicked. We have some on display in our Burbank showroom if you want to test them out.

Don't they have virtually useless witness marks with false Infiniti mark?

Good Question, I haven't heard this before. Many factors inlcuding the camera mount could cause the marks to be off. We will look into how adjustable the mounts are on these lenses.

A Lens Specialist in our Burbank facility tested the 14mm and 35mm on the collimator and projector this morning. He did inform me before he started testing the EF mount lenses in general tend to be less precise then PL mount lenses.

He found that the marketing were off on the on both lenses and the 14mm has some play (we would need a larger sampling to determine if it is a one off occurrence or it is a characteristic of the wider Rokinon lenses).

However, these lenses could have the shims adjusted to be more accurate but it still wouldn’t be as exact as precise as a PL mount lenses.

I’m inquiring about the sharpness of the lenses now on the big screen now.
