OT - Steadycam rig used for something other than camera

Anyone notice that in the movie Aliens, the two Colonial Marines handling the machine guns (or whatever they are) have them mounted to Steadycam rigs? Just thought it was a clever use of motion picture hardware in a futuristic setting to simulate a body mounted heavy weapons platform that absorbed the recoil and didn't limit the soldiers movements.

If you look closely at the lamps that the Marines have on their shoulders, you can see that they are battery powered PAGlights, most often used by ENG/News cameraman before LEDs came along.
