Alexander Boyd
Hey there, having a hard time deciding on one of these spot meters. Would love to hear your thoughts/experiences as I'm planning to get my first SM, using it on a few upcoming film projects. Thanks for your advice! Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted June 3, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted June 3, 2014 I always just tended to use my Sekonic 758 cine which has a built in spot. It never let me down.
Alexander Boyd
Hi Adrian, I'd probably go for the Sekonic 758 too if it would be within my budget (hoping to spend $250-275 for a used one).
Zac Fettig
If you're looking used, you could try a Sekonic L-558. Previous generation. I'll be honest, my 758 is my single most valuable piece of filmmaking kit. I use it all the time. And honestly, it'll probably outlast all the digital cameras I have. Alexander Boyd
Hi Zac, I did look into the Sekonic L-558, though I only found the non-cine version. I think the filter compensation feature of the cine version would be quite nice.
John E Clark
I'd recommend looking at the 'cine' Sekonics. I bought an L-308DC to 'assist' in evaluating the light in terms of footcandles, which is the typical unit of measure for film lights. I've had a Minolta Spot F for years. I bought that after having my Honeywell Pentax meter stolen, and had 3 replacement units flake out in rapid succession.
