Josiah Prigg
What is it like to be a camera operator in a professional environment? And is it lots of fun? Thanks
Sabyasachi Patra
It is fun. However, remember that these days with the emphasis on handheld, it is back breaking. So don't get swayed by any notions of glamour. Go for it if you are passionate about it.

Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted June 23, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted June 23, 2014 It depends on the type of work you do. If you do commercials or features, it's great. You don't need to bring anything, grips bring you apple boxes and set courtesy flags for you, 2nd AC's bring you water bottles, you get to be involved in creative discussions with the DP, and you get the best seat in the house. Then you get to walk away at wrap. Of course, when the camera is rolling, you have to deliver. If you work in reality, documentary, or broadcast, it's a lot harder. The camera is generally on your shoulder 100% of the time and you will do very long takes day after day while a technical director yells direction in your ear over comms. And you rarely get pampered by grips or ACs because a lot of the time there isn't one. Of course, there are a lot more jobs in these fields these days than in commercials of features.
