JB Earl
I have a set of baby sticks in need of a spreader. Is anything available out there for sale, or that I can build? Or should I stick with some chain or a piece of carpet?
Gregg MacPherson
Does the rubber on the common Sachtler one fit? There is a cheap Indian copy of that. If you go the quick DIY route, a wooden triangle with plywood gussets at the corners used to work well.
JB Earl
I'm afraid the rubber would just roll off the tab on the feet. There's not much to attach to on the tripod, without using a hook of some sort. The spikes are a full inch long also. Would you attach somehow to the wooden triangle, or just drop in place? Gregg MacPherson
I meant the basic plastic Sachtler with the heavy rubber fittings at the end. What are you using for the high legs? What happens when you tried that? The spikes on the alloy casting should just drop into the wooden triangle spreader. Mine were made from 1"x1" stick with 1/8" ply gussets, glued and nailed. Very solid and reliable. Not so sexy looking in this vain age though.
JB Earl
High legs are just an old Bogen 350MV. Didn't even try that spreader because of the short double spike-saddle thingy versus the long single spike. I'll try it out tomorrow. Thank you for the ideas. Brian Drysdale
A Ronford metal spreader may work. I used one with a wooden Arri tripod in the past. The old style wooden banjo spreaders are thin on the ground.
JB Earl
What is a banjo spreader like?
Brian Drysdale
It's has three arms that fold around a circular centre into a banjo shape, then the two outer arm open out to form the spreader. They all stay in the same plane, the arms don't fold upwards like a modern spreader.
JB Earl
interesting, I'll have to look around for one
Jon Kline
Until then, three old raquetballs would let you use it indoors, at least.
