I'd add that in addition to watching films-- live life, read books (not based on film) look at photos, develop a visual memory for how certain moments and the light in them, and where you were made you feel, and be able to articulate to others as to why. This will help a lot in getting ideas, I find, and also more importantly, relating them to the many visual and non visual people you will work with. Further, understand the underlying functioning of things-- and not just the hyped marketing of things as best you can (example, why one would choose to scrim -v- dim a tungsten head -v- use a net-- granted that comes with experience, but also if you understand why things work as opposed to just how things work, you'll find you can figure out the how to do things pretty easily)
