Magic Cloth - Stop Loss

Recommended Posts

Diffusion is a difficult one to figure, as it essentially becomes the source, so you can get wildly varying readings depending on meter placement, and where you put the diffusion. For instance, if you take a reading from a lamp, and then put Magic Cloth on the barndoors, it's about a 2.5 stop difference. If you bring the Magic Cloth right up to the meter, it's more like 1.5 stops.

I have a 650w fresnel right here. It meters f8 at about 4 ft (Don't worry about the meter's settings). With magic cloth held directly in front of the lamp, the meter reads about f3.5. As I move the diffusion away from the lamp, towards the meter, the reading changes to f4.5. This is because the diffusion 'becomes' the source. Try it for yourself.

This effect would become less pronounced with greater distances between lamp and meter/subject, but it's worth bearing in mind if you're lighting with lamps in close proximity to your actors.
