Max Field
Just wondering if the great minds of Cinematography.com could mention some features which make excessive use of very saturated gels? Films with the general lighting look of the Schumacher Batman films. http://caps.pictures/199/7-batman-robin/full/batman-robin-movie-screencaps.com-12469.jpg http://caps.pictures/199/7-batman-robin/full/batman-robin-movie-screencaps.com-14065.jpg Thanks for any titles you may bring to the table. Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted September 9, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted September 9, 2017 In the world of comic book / sci-fi movies, it's not hard to find examples that use heavily-colored lights, whether with gels or modern LEDs -- the recent "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" for example. Or "Ghost in the Shell". Even older movies like "Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock" used party gels for a number of scenes. And of course, another comic book movie with strong colors is "Dick Tracy", photographed by Vittorio Storaro. Outside of those genres, there are scenes in many movies set in night clubs or in theatrical venues with colored lighting. Some dramas with colored lighting include "One from the Heart" (which is a musical), again shot by Storaro; "Less Than Zero" uses a lot of colored lighting as well as parts of other movies shot by Ed Lachman, like "Far From Heaven". There are moments in old 3-strip Technicolor movies shot under gelled lighting, the most famous perhaps being this scene in "Gone with the Wind":
Freya Black
"Star Trek 3: The Search of Spock" It's "The Search for Spock" isn't it David? Sorry couldn't resist. Anyway what do you think is going on in that Gone With the wind still? I like it but I was wondering if they were trying to make him look a bit demonic or if it's just supposed to be something about red hot passion? Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted September 10, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted September 10, 2017 Thanks, I corrected it. That scene in "Gone with the Wind" takes place on a hilltop after they flee Atlanta which is burning, so the horizon is red. But yes, even Selznick questioned whether it was too stylized when he saw dailies.
Premium Member Mark Kenfield Posted September 11, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted September 11, 2017 I'd just look at any bloody thing shot since Skypanels came out! I've never seen so many colours on absolutely everything before :p
