Jorge Castrillo
Hello all the community! Yesterday I had a problem shooting with an arri sr3, everything was going well until the camera started beeping after a shot. After that, I tried to record another shoot and the camera was beeping constantly as it does usually when it start recording, but the mirror didnt move, and also the phase didnt work. I changed batteries, but the problem remained, I dont know if it has something to do with the shutter, or maybe with the voltage of the camera. I have some experience shooting with this camera and never happened this to me, so I am a bit lost, I don´t know if someone here could help me because it is breaking my mind! I attach some videos that explain better what is happening to the camera if anyone is interested in check it out: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ZQCqfVJdAAiglgirV4taGxVtaLo0noFx?usp=sharing Many thank in advance! Premium Member Dom Jaeger Posted September 7, 2021 Premium Member Share Posted September 7, 2021 If you've definitely ruled out low battery voltage, then something seems to be wrong with the camera that a technician needs to look into. It could be a number of things.
Premium Member Tyler Purcell Posted September 7, 2021 Premium Member Share Posted September 7, 2021 Have you tried the mechanical inching knob to see if the movement turns at all? That gray knob on the side, push it in and turn it the direction of the arrow, see if the movement moves.

That's fine, there is a belt in the camera between the motor and the mechanics and its probably failed. If the mechanics and the shutter spin with the inching knob, it's just a bad belt. Not a difficult job.

Not a difficult job. That’s one possibility, but not a logical conclusion. Could be a fault with the motor itself, or the drive circuit. All you’re checking by inching it over is that the mechanism itself isn’t jammed. I don’t think it’s helpful to diagnose something as being an easy repair when you don’t actually know that. Correct, if the belt has failed, the motor will not be attached to the moment, thus the movement will not spin via the motor. The camera electronics would know this right away and absolutely sound an alarm. It could be anything really, but the simplest answer, generally is a good place to start investigating. Not suggesting taking the camera apart, getting to that belt is a pain and you will need the proper tools/expertise, but it's the first place I'd look. If it's a bad motor, you'll need to get to the same place anyway. Where it's true, the cost to replace a motor is greater than a belt, the labor (the expensive part) is not much different. You will need to send this camera to a Arri specialist with access to parts.
Premium Member Tyler Purcell Posted September 12, 2021 Premium Member Share Posted September 12, 2021 Ok so I now know a bit more about this issue. The motor brushes get ceased over time and cause the motor to not run. The clue was the tone when you start it. It means the motor is not spinning and usually if the electronics are running, then it’s the motor and carbon build up on the brushes. Not difficult to fix, but needs to be done by a pro.
