  1. I have some projects on DVD and DV-Cam. I don't have any sort of DV-Cam deck so I can't capture of any kind. However, we did burn to DVD too. I want to extract from my DVDs and edit in Final Cut and post on youtube.
  2. knew something was up. so did this guy get banned or did he just cut out?
  3. a good director slaps his crew around whenever he/she wants. including the executive producers. gangsta!
  4. i director who sits straight with a good pair of nikes knows what he's doing, opposed to a director who crosses his legs like a lady.
  5. i think people take acting/directing for granted. good performances come from direction. actors truly understanding how to react and understand subtext comes from directorial coaching. <_<
  6. JAKE Four fried chickens and a coke!
  7. i've never stepped inside a walmart!
  8. can you post a mpeg of your stuff? like about 10 seconds worth?
  9. How good is single frame capturing, one by one? Is the capture more reliable when in a static environment opposed to general moving capture?
  10. You should get into a habit of always using an external light meter. You'll learn DOF lighting and techniques within different areas of your frame. "Test shooting/trial and error" Best way of learning magical exposure. ;)
  11. take it a science lab and have them freeze your stock in absolute zero for about a month. :P
  12. geez my writing's horrible! I need to stop smoking :P oh and Alessandro I didn't mean "you" when I said "you're an industry person.." I was talking in general. Yeah the only downside atm is the amount of memory it burns per minute or whatever ratio. We need to start rolling out 60Terrabyte portable drives. ;)
  13. David gives a good general idea as to why the 10-bit is good! Again, convenience! Think about film schools for a second. This type of technology or service offering will be the next big thing in my opinion. I don't think many students have their own DVCam decks, and mainly because of the cost of deck. Surely the prices of these will go down in the future, but at the same time direct to hard drive will continue growing. Just look at the way nano technology keeps advancing with memory storage. I remember back in the mid 90's I kept telling my friends that as long as the information is digital, there's really no need for CD's to play music, meaning the bulkyness of the your disc player or the need for a physical spin! Look at where we are now, you can fit a 2-4GB USB pinky disk key in your pocket. In the 90's that would've been equivalent to 6 CDs (@650MB each) of music, uncompressed! However, I'm sure these mini keys or apple's notorious compression technology with the pods is the inevitable future. Back to the point with Lacie drives or whatever brand, expect 1 Terrabyte Hard Drives the size of calculator. I just hope that compression methods don't distort the reality of pure information. In a new generation now, young filmmakers, expect them to take digital methods now and in the future for granted. For me the direct hard drive to disk is an excellent option, and especially if it's being handled by a lab with good equipment. I'm not ruling out decks at all! I'm just saying this 10-bit uncompressed is hardly overrated because it's fairly new and something in which will benefit the amateur consumer who can't buy a deck or all the materials! As long as you understand and know what you want then there's nothing wrong with having some pro's layoff something for you onto a hard drive, again convenience. As far as price I think it's fair. It's the same realization of how music producers nowadays don't need to rely on 3K hardware racks for effects when they can buy vst mastering plugins to enhance their recordings. Simiply digital advancing. I think you're a industry person who's been totally saturated with the standards for years it's natural to find this new method a bit different. I suggest every company offer direct to hard drive, not strictly, but as an option and courtesy! Just my thought.
  14. You're so lucky, good luck! My Japan trips have been delayed. =(
  15. Imagine if there was 128-bit transfer for S8 with a hard drive being the size of a building. That would be awesome! :o
  16. 10-bit direct to hard drive = convenience and those willing to pay. I don't own any sort of decks to layoff to anyways. If it's as good as DV that's enough more.
  17. I guess it's beneficial to have something that would cancel out the motor noise, but there are several ways/cheats oto overcome camera noise. When you think about it, zoomed close-ups are a huge way to cheat out the motorized sound. I have footage in which I shot a scene in a busy office with many cubicles. Person A on the left and B on the right with office printers, phones ringing, people on phones, just realistic office noise in which I didn't even need to use the wild track. lots of compensating of cuts, cheats, made the scene work and not even notice the drag of frames2lips. That was without the crystal sync too! In the end and point being, you couldn't hear the camera. With a distance of 20ft, tight medium shot, boom unoticed as usual. Everything came out great. Obvious idea is to overcome camera noise and distances from the gun. But anyhow those are just cheats that I just do. But the whole sync'd cancellation is a good idea. Make the prototype, show results, and hey I might buy! And I'm aware that you're referring to close to camera shooting. Funny how shooting far is a style within itself.
  18. thanks, Chris & Zae. just what I was looking for!
  19. or whichever brand of Hard Drives, has anybody rented out w/ good results? I have about 8 rolls that I'd like to test using the '10-bit uncompressed' method direct to hard drive. I've been trying to find a thread a while back where someone mentioned a Shadow S8 HD gate transfer, but I can't find the link, and I believe that house transferred to 10-bit as well. Thing is I don't have a BetaCam deck or any deck of some sort, so it's to my convenience to try out the hard drive method.
  20. hey, Scot Like the "Hold Me Tight" clip. Was that shot on the Beaulieu?
  21. Regarding the telecine, can anyone recommend a superior transfer machine & service. A Shadow Telecine transfer to 10-bit to Lacie with supervised grading. Edit at home using Lacie. the Analog medium hmm
