  1. Have I come close to answering you? I appreciate the detailed pitch info, Charles. Apparently the minimum order from Kodak Canada is 6000ft. Lift (http://lift.ca/) in Toronto ordered the "required" minimums this year for both their R8 E100D and Plus-X reversal. They offer both 25ft and 100ft spools and can actually spool down more if requested. I do not know the originating Kodak roll type prior to reperforation. It is actually selling quite well as Toronto is evolving into a sort of NA epicenter for the contracting film industry. For example, they are the largest sellers in Canada of Super 8 film averaging 500x S8 carts/week in the summer down to approximately 100-200x in the winter. Sarah Polley's latest motion picture film project in Toronto ended up shooting over 900x S8 E100D carts and apparently exhausted Kodak's local supply with LIFT providing the uptake with their own stock. It has been suggested that if UP8 becomes more popular LIFT may consider alternative R8 stocks to reperf officially with Kodak Canada. But in the interim I will most likely utilize Mr Nowill's services. But is shrinkage not time based? The pitch comparison demoed by LIFT staff regarding R8 and 16mm perfs utilized fairly fresh stock.
  2. Why not revive a 3 year old fascinating thread regarding Techniscope 16mm and timecode applications? Is Paul Bruening still around? Well TechniScope 16mm is actually here now but its called UltraPan8. The frameline is a paltry 0.6mm and there is no room for timecode LTC or VITC data above the frame. But take a look at the spaces left and right of the image. Would the famous AatonCode matrix fit?, i.e. 1. http://db.tt/mOoaVKp 2. http://db.tt/yQvrul9 3. http://db.tt/JSbM3IC 4. http://db.tt/qXFY2mJ 5. http://db.tt/kAhNgUU Here is an example of overscanned 24 bit depth footage and an UP8 film "sketch", i.e. -> one light color correction. E100D rated at 100 ASA. Can AatonCode be recorded after exposure? That application in itself would get film preservationist very excited.
  3. Thank you, Ignacio. The resultant super ultrawide aspect ratio would be approximately 5.6:1. A tad extreme to say the least. But certainly doable for those who consider native UltraPan8 "not" wide enough.
  4. Charles, I have been advised that both standard 16mm and Regular 8mm dimensions perf dimensions are identical. But a tech at LIFT physically demonstrated that there is a slight difference in pitch by overlaying both 16mm and R8 film perfs. Can you clarify the exact technical perf distinction between them re: dimension and pitch? This is fundamental to UP8. If I am to request Mr. Nowill in the UK to reperf 2 perf 16mm negative into R8 would he not have to change the pitch of the existing 2 perforations on the stock 16mm film when adding 2 additional perfs for R8mm per 16 mm frame height?
  5. Hi Charles, Interesting and I have noticed the similarities between the Kodak/Lafayette/Athena chassis. What do you mean by "1500" pull down? Is this a numerical index re: Regular 8mm pulldown.? Are you able to convert these projectors to 8mm pulldown yourself? I appreciate the video clip. Interesting add on lens. By the way I reside in Toronto.
  6. A very big thanks to Douglas Palmer in the UK in unearthing an actual native declassified UK Ministry of Defense ultraPan8 projector! UltraPan8 is a new native ultrawide film format with an aspect ratio of 2.8:1 that happens to be wider than Cinemascope. UP8 utilizes is a hybrid of Bolex H8 + H16 cameras, i.e. When Douglas first contacted me I could not believe the following plate inscription in his attached photos, i.e "Use 16mm film perforated for 8mm pulldown only". Which begs the question where is the associated UltraPan8 camera? He purchased it at a Min of Defense auction a few years ago thinking it was a regular 16mm projector. Here are the specs as per Douglas's email, i.e. "It's a LW Photo Data Analyzer, Model 224A Mk.4. Made in California. It is 240 volts and has old style pre-focus lamp from 300w to 1000w. Speeds 1-12 fps. and 24 fps. 2 inch lens. The light output is cut down a lot by the built-in heat filter so really should be removed. (It's really used for single frame projection mainly.)" I will be arranging shipment to Jean-Louis Seguin for some slight modification work. The present gate is slightly too high and somewhat not wide enough. Douglas has also provided the following videos detailing some aspects of this UP8 projector, i.e. 1. 24FPs projected on grid paper to illustrate projector frameline and registration. http://www.youtube.com/user/filmisfine#p/a/u/2/ZcZUDcGkzKQ 2. 9. Hi Chris. The short answer is yes. But at significant cost. I was quoted $5000 US to convert my K3 to Cinemascope Double Super 8 format by jkcamera.com approximately 2-3 years ago. But in general converting a K3 16mm camera to the required R8mm pulldown for UP8 is the most difficult and expensive option. The premise of the UP8 format is built on a manufacturers 8/16mm hardware and optical interchangeability, e.g. Bolex. Although I have started examining my Russian Double Super 8 camera, e.g. EBay item# 260585370845 http://www.ebay.com/itm/260585370845?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D260585370845%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1#ht_769wt_1187 The gate could be milled out to the required 10.75mm x 3.75mm UP8 gate. And I suspect the zoom lens will provide the required coverage. But the reflex viewfinder does not provide easy access and probably would not provide coverage in itself. A non-reflex Bolex H8 might be a cheaper alternative also. No H16 reflex viewfinder required for the final UP8 hybrid. The H8 gate would have to be milled out and the aperture widened. The parallax viewfinder (Octameter) would have to be masked off. I hope this helps.
  10. Martin, Although I have technically diverged from this type of anamorphic setup you describe with native UltraPan8 systems...I consistently enjoy your detailed and enthusiastic postings an all matters pertaining to Cinemascope Super 8. It is longterm enthusiasts such as yourself who keep this special little format's candle burning brightly.
  11. Andy, That is one very rare and expensive beast indeed. It would be cheaper to purchase the more common all in one LOMO square front anamorphic lenses. I found one example. They are very sharp and the tiny Super 8 format would end utilizing the center part of the lens. However this lens would also require a PL to C Mount adapter. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOMO-Anamorphic-50mm-lens-PL-mount-used-IS-NR-/140599076695?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item20bc5ba757
  12. Hi Jonathan. The setup you describe are difficult at best. 1. My original design for a potential anamorphic adapter setup which was never implemented, i.e http://www.flickr.com/photos/90929958@N00/423625964/in/photostream 2. Anamorphic test shot utilizing 16mm anamorphic projector lens + stepdown ring + Beaulieu 4008. Cinematography by Justin Lovell,i.e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrvQCV2kfn4 Hence my efforts to develop native spherical Ultrapan8 system with aspect ratio = 2:8:1. Wider than Cinemascope 2:4:1. Utilizes the entire 16mm width of Regular 8 film. Standard 16mm optics cover the entire frame optically centered. Viewfinder is native UltraPan8 w/ mask for CinemaScope. Double the run time relative to 16mm film. 90-100% increase in imaging area relative to Super 8/Regular 8mm. Much cheaper than Super 16 conversion, i.e. Cheers! NK
  13. Andrew, I just ordered a H8 round to square spindle adapter for my UltraPan8 Bolex from Jaakko <jpkurhi@att.net> of www.jkcamera.com. Apparently this is a stock item, i.e. pair of H8 spindle adapter(s) at $22.50 + S/H $8 = $30.50 US (Total Cost).
  14. Thanks, Toby. Much cheaper than a Super 16 conversion. It depends on what you bring to the "conversion" table. Please contact Jean-Louis Seguin directly for a quote (bolextech@gmail.com)i.e. 1. Both H8 and H16 (cheapest) 2. H16 only (at this time it is a straight swap for a H8 body at no cost) 3. H8 only 4. Neither (most expensive) Bitworks.org did the transfer.
  15. Thanks Matt. Would you consider an UltraPan8 mod?
  16. I present my first filmic "sketch" utilizing the UltraPan8 film format. My new short film is called "my memories of her are missing". UltraPan8 is a native 2.8:1 spherical ultrawide film format utlizing hybrid Bolex H8/H16 cameras. 1. The format uses 2-perf R8mm film that is 16mm wide and the 1/2 pulldown of the 8mm gate. 2. Running time is doubled relative to standard 16mm filmstock as there are 80 UltraPan8 frames per 16mm foot as opposed to 40. 3. Standard 16mm optics provided full coverage optically centered. 4. The "imaging" area is increased by 90-100% Relative to 8mm/S8 film. 5. This film is an edited version of the 1700x600 DIVX extraction from the master 2080x870x24 sequential jpegs. Youtube = Vimeo = Cheers!

  18. Charles, Regrettably, Exclusive no longer processes reversal film and has been forwarding work to Niagara Custom Labs. Apparently NCL is the only source of 16mm prints in NA. Guy Maddin must be pissed.

  21. Matthew, If your still around check out the UltraPan8 threads regrading a new 2.8:1 ultrawide format utilizing standard R/D8 2 perf film! Cheers! NK
  22. Thanks, Charles. The flare may or may not be investigated as per the results of my next test roll which has just been sent off to bitworks.org for scanning. The base side scratch may be attributed to my accidentally bypassing the upper Bolex auto-load channel. Niagara Custom Labs has advised that this scratch is not visible on the 2nd roll. That is correct and I appreciate the introduction to new film terminology, i.e. "loading fog"! Yes, it was a standard 25ft double perf R/D8 spool. LIFT in Toronto can also provide both E100D and Plus-X reversal film in 100 ft lengths if needed.
  23. Hi! This is has been cross-posted due to the hybrid 8mm/16mm technology utilized in UltraPan8 cameras. This is the full resolution over-scanned 2080x870 pixels x 24bit depth sequential jpegs source file converted to MPEG4 for viewing purposes regarding the inaugural UltranPan8 test film roll recently uploaded. This newest upload removes an additional level of compression, i.e. 1. original upload conversion/compression path: UltraPan8 film -> 2080x870 pixels x 24bit depth sequential jpegs -> DIVX (mpeg4) 2.8:1 extraction -> YouTube/Vimeo compression 2. New upload conversion/compression path: UltraPan8 film -> 2080x870 pixels x 24bit depth sequential jpegs -> YouTube/Vimeo compression Bolex hybrid H8/H16 camera mod provided by Jean-Louis Seguin. The scan was delivered by John Gledhill of bitworks.org utilizing his sprocketless 16mm transfer bay. Note that the ultra-wide native frame dimensions of UltraPan8 = 10.52mm x 3.75mm w/ AR = 2.8:1 The file is also available for public download and examination here, i.e. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29307178/Squential%20JPEGS%2018fps%20MPEG4.mp4 Note the impressive density of information contained in this minimal latitude reversal film stock, i.e. Ektachrome 100D.

  25. Color grading is utilizing post-production software such as Adobe After Effects to tweak, match, subtract, add, etc... various or specific components of the color space.
