  1. I found I had the exact same lens flare problems it turned out the flares where cause by my UV filter, with a 4x4 black promist in front of the circular UV once I took the uv filter off the flares disappeared I never really understood why it happend? The filters on there own didnt cause any flares but when they where used together they did? So I would recommend taking off any circular UV or haze filter and see what happens?
  2. Hi I recently saw some Ultra16mm footage I shot last summer it was a test for a wedding video company looking to offer 16mm film to their clients I shot about 50 feet of fuji 250t it was a 4 month old recan from a short film I shot earlier in the year Anyways the film didnt get processed right away it sat in a fridge for about 3 months then the wedding video company got around to getting it developed and transferred a few weeks ago it was transferred at pro res 422hq 1080 Anyways when I was watching it, every couple of seconds the image would flash blue then disappear Does anyone know what this could be? At first I thought maybe I accidently flashed the negative when loading, but I know I was real careful, and I always thought when that happend you get red flashes not blue? any ideas? could it be that the film sat un-processed for 3 months or maybe something happened at the lab or transfer house?
  3. I'll sometimes use ND gel on any window that is on camera I did a side cu shot of a driver from the passenger side and the window behind the driver was blown right out it was mid afternoon which made it really hard so I put some nd9 on the one window, but I left all the other windows ungelled that where off camera I was able to exposed for the shadows and the background held up fairly well especially considering I shot it on a 1/3 chip camera I didnt use any lights what so ever, oh but I did put a white sheet in the actors lap he didnt mind:) but that created some good bounce light at times
  4. Shane is a member of the ASC and has been in the industry for some time the guy is professional,he just made a mistake Ive also read those stories saying shane is a light tweaker, but most of those stories come from christian bale fanboys who are just spreading rumors about shane.
  5. I would go with film especially since its outdoors, and for me 10 rolls of film for a 10 minute short is a lot I recently did a 10 min short with only 3 rolls of film.
  6. Ive shot with this stock lots its possible your in camera light meter is broken? then again shooting under a 60 watt light bulb isnt very strong to begin with Do you have an incident meter? I find those work best for me your in camera meter works as a reflective meter,so pointing the meter directly at the bulb which is actually quite bright will tell your camera meter to stop down, making everything else very dark I guess the solution is just get more light,I think you should be using a lot more than a 60watt bulb do you have access to any studio lighting?
  7. in the recent ASC mag, richardson says he purposely kept hot top lights even though they where not justified,or not very natural? he said he likes the mood it creates, and doesn't always try for naturalism
  8. I remember that shot, its the only one I notice to be soft brad pitt kept taking steps towards the camera, and the last step he took must of been to close. I agree with Jonathan on that
  9. Well it turns out the problem was not the camera or the transfer it was the Battery Pack! lol It never occurred to me that the battery could malfunction? Im really happy it turned out to be the battery, its cheap to replace I dont have to get any camera repairs. And now I can start shooting more Ultra16mm :D!!
  10. Yeah I think your right? its not in HD, and I be leave its between 720p and SD? I was a little disappointed the director didn't upload it in HD:(
  11. Hey I recently updated my reel. let me know what you guys think? contains some Ultra 16mm, HD+ 35mm adapter, Reg 16 Visit My Website
  12. Im not sure,I be leave most of the props where donated. I know the budget was small.
  13. The Brevis is a great adapter then again its the only one I ever used,so I cant compare it to anything else. I just dont like how the switch is so easy to bump, and turn off the groundglass next to that its great, only 1/2 stop of light loss.
  14. Ive shot on 7222 a couple of times now and I was amazed at how well the film held up under low light. I had areas of the frame that where 2 stops under exposed, and it still held detail. and wasnt muddy Although Ive only ever used the filmstock on small interior locations. My biggest light I used was a 650 fresnel, and I was purposely over exposing my edge lights by 5 stops and I could of gone higher. one advantage with black and white is you dont really have to worry about color temperature or in other words you dont have to gel your tungsten lights. thats what really saved me,and made my life easier. although that being said bw film is more sensitive to daylight, so if you have HMIs you should be well off. And when ever I shoot outside at night I always try to use fog. it can be hard to control, but its saved me a few times.
  15. Thanks Andy Im glad you said that,I feel the same with. somtimes you have to embrace the limitations that digital offers, and use it creativly. I do try my best to avoid clipping on frontal lighting, I love it when back lights or edge lights clip. or when out of focused areas of the frame blow out. and black promists really help. As for the saturation,we had some really colourful sets and costumes, plus the HPX like most digital cameras really produce colors that really pop, somtimes its too much, but I liked what it did on this video. I watched your video, good work man:) the stedicam work was awesome, and good exposure, I know how hard it can be shooting in a forrest in daylight on digital. I thought you may of shot film, until I read the bottom headline.
  16. Thanks Adrian we had 2 great art directors Oshy and Yaun did a fantastic job. As for the lighting be leave it or not a few shots the Director had to ask me to tone it down a bit LOL :D The shot on the bed at :32 I actually had the highlights 2 stops higher, the director said it looks like the Sun is in the room or their covered in Lava. so I scrimed the light back about 2 stops, at the time I thought it looked great the way I originally had it,but looking at the video Im glad I listened to Jeremy. overall Im not a big fan either of burning highlights, I much prefer the roger deakins method of lighting. But it felt right for this music video?
  17. Hey New music video I shot for Ashley Richards the song called second guess just went online. The Director was Jeremy Lutter This is the 2nd music video Ive done with Jeremy, the first video I did with him was for Justin Hewitt and it involved stop animation and body paint, that was shot on a DSLR 1 frame at a time. This video is waaay different, this one is a pop video we shot it on a panasonic HPX-170 with a brevis 35mm adapter and canon FD lens. I also kept a 1/4 black promist filter on the camera the whole time. the video had a retro theme, and we used pin up photography as a lot of references. in terms of the lighting I know pin up photography can be a bit flat. So I wanted to glamorize things a bit more with glowing highlights and contrast. Let me know what you think, good or bad? heres the link
  18. I was thinking the same thing Im so glad to see a period piece not take the typical overdone root
  19. I own a chimera triolet, I use it with a pancake lantern its a great light, but the cable is getting pulled right out of the back of the triolet. The light is only 4 months old. the light is supposed to hang upside down, and it seems to me the weight of the cable is whats pulling the cable out. the wires are now exposed, and now the light wont even turn on!:( Im hoping this would be coverred on the 5 year warranty Im also wondering if any one on this board has had simular problems with chimera products?
  20. I actually like how dof adaptor sofen the image because of that I hardly use my promist filters anymore. I guess it comes down to personal taste
  21. Im currently shooting a feature film on the Brevis35 with a panasonic hpx-170 the lenses Im using are canon fd I highly recommend the brevis, although its the only dof adaptor Ive used so I cant compare it with anything else. the brevis only loses half stop of light, the batteries last for over 30 hours, and only takes half an hour to fully charge my only complaint is the switch to turn on the vibrating groundglass is easy to bump either me or my ac must of bumped the switch sometime yesterday and 2 shots where ruined because of it,luckily we found out not long after, and we had the time to back track and re due those shots. so Im gonna consider taping the switch or somthing either way the brevis is a good investment, we got our brevis with 4 lenses for less than $2000 canadian
  22. Hey well I just talked with paul at Cinelicious unfortunately the flicker issues where in the negative so it was not the transfer. The flickering occurred at the exact same moment in both transfers. I really appreciate cineliciouse for taking a 2nd look at the negative. Ive always liked there transfer jobs, and I plan on shooting more U16 and getting more transfers done at cineliciouse when I get the camera fixed. I guess Im gonna have to do some tests and figure out what could be causing the flicker problems in the camera? luckily our editor can actually fix the flicker issues in post?:) Im not sure how,or how long that may take, but at lease our film isnt totally ruined:)
