  1. HI i hope this isnt confusing. Im planning a shot and wonder if ive got this right. Im filming a short bit of identical action which repeats 3 times (in this case the actor sits onto the floor in a certain way. The movement takes 3 seconds). The first time she sits the camera is set at 24fps and lense is at T 4 (for instance) The second (identical action) is filmed at 48fps and so I though to change the lense to T2.8 The third (also identical action) is filmed at 72fps and the lense would be at T2.4 When I cut this, i will place the three scenes close to each other, the first is interrupted by the second which is interrupted finally by the third which is the only cut that concludes the sitting down action. Have i calculated the T stop correctly? If I double the frame speed do I open the aperture 1 stop do double the light?? Thanks stephen
  2. Hi, personally can't justify the expense so i use a Bolex viewer, the kind that has an adjustable view from 10 to 150mm. The aspect ration is the same as what i shoot with. cheers
  3. it looks like it has a standard arri mount, so should fit standard and even the bayonet mount, although i dont think its in very good shape. cheers
  4. I do also like my filmo, and hate the bolex for hand-held. I prefer/ love my arriflex 16st for hand-held work. It has that ergonomic handle and a standard eye-level eyepiece. It works best for hand held with the 100' internal film loads . That's not so true with a 400' magazine, although even then, if I use an extension "elbow" eyepiece, its still reasonably easy to work with. stephen
  5. hi and thanks for the input, im trying to get rid of the blur to sharpen the image, mostly. when projected at 24fps, it slows down, looks clear and sharper . . . . and i was hoping would be less nauseating to watch. i wasnt thinking of removing every other frame, that might cause madness. thanks
  6. I can't find any threads about this. Has anyone ever done home processing of black and white film. A film maker I met in Montreal told me about a guy he knows who does this all the time, and he called it Bucket Processing. He dumps the film into a big bucket in a darkroom. He then agitates it and "thumps" it to rise the bubbles. I sounded interested. Probably scratches the heck out of the film though. thanks
  7. If I shoot at 48fps and then project/work at 24fps can I get rid of the blur in the image when Im doing pans and the like. Specifically, I was thinking about shooting landscape out of the side of a car or train while traveling at higher speed. Would this help to decrease the blur? My camera doesn't have an adjustable shutter. Its a arri 16st. Stephen
  8. Hi, Planning a 2 month trip back to South India to do some documentary production work on 2 ideas I'm still working on, and wonder what anyone thinks or know about buying & processing film stock from/in India. I notice that Kodak has accredited labs, but they're not really near where I'll be. So I would have to order film from them which has to be shipped by mail & then I'll mail exposed film to them for development. I haven't found anything near Bangalore which is the nearest city to me, still 3 hours away. Cinelabs in Mumbai looks the best. I've emailed them for film availability and lab fees but I haven't gotten response from my email inquires. Does anyone have any suggestions. thanks stephen

  10. If you're planning to work here for money, it's best you get a work permit through HRDC. If you don't and you get caught out, they will deport you and never let you back in. The permit needs to be prepared by a prospective employer and it has to say they need you, you and only you, and that no canadian can do what you do. it will take up to 3 months to get one that way, and of course there are fees involved. OR hire a canadian immigration lawyer and together with the prospective employer you can get a corporate visa in a day or two. Ive been through both situations myself. good luck
  11. hi, have you considered a rental? You could get a decent lightweight & reliable 16mm camera for about that. Cheers
  12. Hey, I'm preparing a plan to do some documentary 16mm film work in south india. Do i need permits or special permission for this (im in Canada)? I was at the Indian foreign office a couple of weeks ago preparing my visa for travel but hesitated to ask in case it opened a huge issue up. I'm doing an amateur production, was originally bringing an arri 16st and nagra, but now ive downsized to a Bolex 16 and small Marantz recorder, both of which are less conspicuous and lightweight. I don't want to use digital at all. I figure it will attract less attention also. I have been there before, and have a support network for my story, im just concerned about getting bogged down in paperwork or refused. thanks
  13. Hi, i'm new at this, but i just did a sound course. I think the answer depends on which kind of machine you use. Some analogue machines have recording, erasing and play heads. Your instruction manual should identify that for you. Cheers
  14. hi, yeah interested, is it 16mm, how much film do you have?? stephen
  15. Hi i just bought three 400ft mags for my arri camera and need to find 2 cores that are missing. Other than ebay is there a source. Someone suggested making them out of wood with a washer screwed below so that it locks on. That seems like a lot of work, and im not sure im up to the work. I also though about cannabilizing a 100 foot dayload reel for its core, and loading film onto that. any ideas. am i nuts to try the dayload reel. thanks stephen
  16. CAN I USE KODAK EXR 7386 STOCK DIRECTLY IN MY CAMERA? IT'S INTENDED USE IS PRINT FILM FOR PROJECTION. THANKS
  17. Thanks, whats the connection for, is it a power plug in??.
  18. Ive added the right side view of the "box" and the left side view of the "button" I wrote about. Any ideas?? Thanks Sorry, im new at this, this is the Right hand side view, beneath the viewer. its a small button with a spike on the other side of the plate which pushes a toggle just rearward of the on/off button. thanks
  19. I just bought an arri 16 ST and i cant figure out what the 2 "lights" on top are for. I havent powered it up yet, no battery. I think the forward one is somehow connected to the shutter, and the rear sits on top of a little "box" which is on the right hand side of the camera, just above the motor. Also, on the left hand side, beneath the view there is a small stainless steel button which when depressed moves something next to the shutter button in the camera. I cant find this info in any manual and hoped someone knows here. Thanks in advance
