  1. pouch, slate markers, tape, fatmax measuring tape, spare camera logs, arch supports for your feet, canned air, sharpies, flashlight, screwdriver
  2. Few more questions, What usually goes in the remarks section (day/night, filter, ________?) What do you write on the camera report if the shot didn't need to be slated? What do you write on the camera report if it didn't need to slated AND it was MOS?
  3. thanks for the pearls of wisdom, everyone! Yes it is low-budget, I'm more of a volunteer than staff member. I'll check into getting a fatmax
  4. I was a camera pa/sub 2nd the other day, just a little terrifying. I looked stupid a few times and wanted to make sure it didn't happen again. I was getting a measure on the lens height but the tape kept drooping, I asked some 'heads up' if they could hold it while I took a reading, they gave me a look of outrage. I understand though, they have jobs too. Anyone recommend a stronger tape? The camera we used, the dial was blocked by the operators head, so it wasn't the easiest to get a reading off of, plus we were working fast and I didn't give myself time to write down the dial between take 1 and 2, so by the end of the day my camera report looked messed up. I was looking for the DP to tell me when to lay down marks, should I become intuitive about this? I noticed a couple of times I had to do double letters as in scene 18 double apple, why the double?
  5. Another words, let's say I have a 50mm lens and I put it on a 35mm camera, will it have the same field of view if I put that sames lens on a 16mm camera?
  6. You make me proud to own an HV30, not that it does everything by itself, but that it has the capability to achieve such imagery. Awesome camera work, awesome cinematography.
  7. I'm a novice DP and jr motion graphics artist. For my reel, should I seperate DP work from motion graphics work? ***All the motion graphic work that involves video was shot by me so it wouldn't look like I'm taking credit for someone else's DPn' Also, are reels just about showcasing your best work or is there something else underlying that should be included?
  8. I'm a fan of the music, strong competent Dp'n
  9. I'm thinking about seeing it in imax but I've never been to imax before. Does it give you the unpleasant feeling like you're watching a regular movie sitting in the front row?
  10. A man once told me, "Do what you love, then you'll do your best work and people will throw money at you to do it." though some will attest to how untrue that last part is, I believe you have to follow your passion though even if it not as a career.
  11. It's not that I'm trying to be Kaminski jr, I just find his work very engaging and is one reason I'm so passionate for cinematography. Just trying to incorporate his style into mine a lil...
  12. Hi, I want to buy a diffusion filter to replicate some of the looks from Kaminski, from reading AC, I know he's used Schneider filters, though those are little too expensive, I was thinking about getting some sort of tiffen filter. They make a lot of diffusion filter, but I wasn't sure which one would give that great Kaminski look. Also, what other things would you say easily identifies a film as being shot by Kaminski, other than his name being in the credits. Thank you!
  13. I saw 'color' but since I don't use 'color' (I'm a colorista man) I was wondering if it would be helpful enough.
  14. I contacted Lee and they sent it free
  15. On professional big budget movies, how much of the audio is generally done through ADR?
  16. If somebody would be nice enough to tell me the film type, camera type, lens type of the past three films I'd surely appreciate it.
  17. I see, so Gaffer's tape is like duct only stronger and less residuey, thank you
  18. Hello, can you tell me a little bit about gaffer's tape, what makes it different than other tapes (painters, duct). Does it leave a residue? Are things I shouldn't stick it to?
  19. So what are the standard sizes that 35mm comes in? (ex. 1000')
  20. I've heard some people say less than 100' others 150' and still those that say 200' Also, what about 16mm?
  21. You hit the nail on the head Saul, I just graduated not too long ago and am having career crisis issues. It's the fork in the road, do I commit fulltime to what will pay the bills or linger a little bit and wait for production to pick up... Even if working in films doesn't cut it enough for me to raise a family someday, or if I'm not cut out for it, I'll always shoot.
  22. Thanks everyone for your comments, and you're right Walter, the only way I'll know if I can is by trying.
  23. I love cinematography. I can't get it out of my system. Lately though, my confidence has been shaken. I've been talking with some DP friends and they all seems to have extrenuous schedules, working long hours everday, all day (shocking I know). One is working 13, 14 hours days for the next six months. If put in their place and working almost every waking moment, I don't know if I could keep interest and still stay creatively sharp, still professionally competent. How do you do it? After day 67, after hundreds of setups and meetings, do you just not care anymore? It seems like having your favorite meal, everday, all day. Maybe I'm not cut out to be a professional cinematographer, maybe I'm too green at the moment and just need some time to get stronger.
