  1. Nolan's Memento was shot with 5222. ( for the present day scenes, color for the past) You'll probably find more documentaries and low budget films shot with Double X rather than feature films because it is a high speed film.
  2. Then you'll be humiliated when he doesn't answer.
  3. Werkmeister's Harmonies was a lot contrastier. That is why I like Damnation better.
  4. Oh, yeah, I've seen that article and forgot he said Kodak. Thanks for reminding me. He says most of it was shot by Medvigy, but not which scenes. Important ones by the GErman guy. Now we just need to find out cameras and lenses.
  5. Thanks for the youtube link. I ordered Damantion on Amazon but it will be a few weeks till it arrives. Now I know where to go for clips ! I loved watching it on the big screen, here at the Archive. Not that I got the story. But the cinematography was wonderful....
  6. Thanks, for the post, Christophe. It looks like no one knows ! I've phrased the question 3 different ways. You have a charming little web site.
  7. Does anyone know what film stocks are used in Eastern Block countries ? I think Kodak is available, but not sure what else they use... Specifically, i was wondering what Bela Tarr's Damnation was shot with. I couldn't find any info on the Web.
  8. I loved watching Bela Tarr's Damnation. BUt, I'll bet no one has heard of Gábor Medvigy. He's done a lot of Tarr's films, but this one was his first and I think, best. What camera, lenses, film stock did this guy use ? How could someone find something like that out ? I couldn't find anything on the web.
  9. WOW, I was blown away by Bela Tarr's Damnation. I saw it for the first time last night at the last night of the Bela Tarr film festival at Harvard. I've never see such beautiful cinematography. SatanTango is usually rated a better movie, but I liked Damnation better. Does anyone know the specs on this movie ? Film, lens, cameras, ect. Yes, what do they use in the eastern block ? Russian lenses, cameras ? It wasn't as contrasty as Werkmeister Harmonies. I'm so inspired to reprint my black and white 4x5 negatives from when I was a student at RISD. Depressive beauty never looked so good. David Fincher rain looks way too slick in comparison ! That's the difference between capitalism and communism !
  10. I'm just a still photographer, so I wouldn't know.
  11. What I meant is that I like the feel of the Aaton better. Some people think that it is more stable, quiet and comfortable than the Arri. Feature film productions may like the Arri better because of the features you mention. I'll have to look it up somewhere. The Aaton is a better field camera. Sorry to enervate you, I didn't receive all the replies to my message.
  12. So, does anyone know what cameras Bela Tarr or his cinematographer used in Satantango ? I know he used 5 different cinematographer, (mostly the Hungarian one), but have no information about who shot what scenes and with what lens, film or camera.
  13. You misquoted me. David Mullen said it was the noise problem and that it was 16mm, when they also make 35. I don't see why it is so obvious if you try the cameras.
  14. I would guess that it was Harris Savides composition and lighting and Jonathan Glazer camera movement.
  15. Some of those movies, like Children of Men had great handheld work. Why the Arri over the Aaton ? Just the noise aspect ? I'm sure that there are ways to solve that problem. I thought that a lot of people prefer the Aaton for it's stability. Cat on the shoulder comfort. The new Penelope is also 35mm and is specially designed for 3-perf and 2-perf shooting
  16. It could be all three, and that would be nice, but what I liked is the camera movement following the runner. Probably it was one persons idea. Wondering who. Maybe whoever is resposible could answer us here.
  17. Does anyone know the technical specs on SatanTango ? What cameras where they using, film ? I read that there were 5 diiferent cinematographers who worked on the film. I think only one Hungarian who did most of it. Medvigy. I wonder who did those great dark shots of the people all curled up and sleeping towards the end.
  18. It's even better the more times you see it. Hey Sean is that you in the photo, it looks like something out of Memento.
  19. Thanks for posting the Techinical Specs, David. Some of the handheld camera work in Children of Men was pretty lively and stable at he same time. Now we know why : because of the Arri camera !!!
  20. Didn't realize that Climates was HD...Enjoyed seeing the Fragmented Iraq in fragments.
  21. What if you are shooting Digital ? Is it better to shoot color and then change it to BW ?
  22. I was never impressed by slick or perfect cinematography. I saw Children of Men tonight and everything was in perfect cold, blue but it didn't move me. Lively films like Crash are much more interesting... I liked the cinematography in La Petite Jerusalem because the guy gets in the middle of things. Laurent Brunet is his name , I think.
  23. So who is responsible fro the incredible opening shot of Birth ? The DP , Director or GB
  24. But Nicole Kidman ruined the whole film with her vapid acting. Nothing too innovative about the cinematography, though.
