  1. Dave's Right, it is a flashback. I must admit, I had little Idea what I was doing when I shot this. It was my last highschool short which I randomly threw together 1 day before, no story boards, not even a script really. I know its not good practice but hey, I'm not disatisfied with the outcome of the imagery, although I do agree with it may being a bit to frosty for a still, but in motion and whats going on in the story its rather fitting. And I agree, I wish I could have paid more attention to what would be cropped out, but I rushed to shoot this and didnt spend much time in post fixing that. For me, there are only a few uncomfortable moments so I'll live. Really appreciate your comments. Maybe if I have time I'll host it somewhere so you can watch it, if I do I'll let you know. It runs 6 mins 34 seconds.
  2. shot on XL1S, Douple Fog Filter, cropped 2.40 Thanks,
  3. random, no I actually dont go to Santa Maria High, Im at Righetti. Im actually in class right now. I lived here with my parents, and am waiting til I graduate to move down south but not before I go attempt to die in Germany. That should be fun. I went to hancock for 2 semesters, I may have seen you. what classes did you take? Oh, and I really dont like Santa Maria too much, I like LA area much better ofcourse.
  4. We are watching it in school, it looks great, very warm. High contrast high sat, anyone know what they shot it on? I feel like it may have been a reversal stock but I could be completely wrong. any technical aspects on the creation of this chinese flick would greatly be appreciated. thanks, Allen Achterberg
  5. so my highschool video teacher decides he wants to broadcast a 5 minute comedy show to our school on fridays...i say okay, and I tell him i'd DP it. he says coo. So as i watch the rehersals and realize the script sucks major pardon my french here but it sucks major balls. so after a few rehersals i set up cameras and look and decide how i would like to light it. so i look into the little tiny light kit and light it. it looked horrable. so the next day I bring my own C-stands, China Balls, MR lamp, and gels and dififusion. was better. but still needed a lot more light, and more fixtures. I am running into shadow issues and theres not much i can do about it. My teacher really wants to shoot this with 3 cameras running all the time, but now tapes in the cameras. i mean, its DV for heavens sake. it wouldnt hurt not ONE BIT, it might actually save him. but he wants to run each camera through the switcher and go to vhs, And the whole time im running around in circles lighting it and setting the cameras exposures for the camera operators swearing to myself in german. I'm pretty sure my teacher is an idiot, but i dont want to say it that way. for example, he wanted me to all of a suddon make it dark (dim) and have one spot lit on our sibject who is talking. we have no dimmer, non of our lights would pull it off, and I just dont have anything to work with, image someone telling you to do this and have nothing to do it with. so i told him and the director who for some reason believed 2 weeks later i was still doing it, it aint gon' happen. so tomarrow I reconstruct the lights, and shoot it, I am bringing my own personal minDV tapes, and we are going to shoot a rehersal. I will post pics as soon as i can for anyone interested in seeing a highschools production frame stils. any advice would be nice, thoughts too thanks, Allen Achterberg
  6. yeah just bought it for 6 bucks at hollywood video. i watched it and its an amazing film. Definately worth checking out. Martin Kukula BVK did a wonderful job too.
  7. gotta watch that mag scratch on that PD170. he wants a video camera, I'd recommend getting this little tiny 3-chip in circuit city for around 500 bucks, real cheap and decent image. It's still miniDV but you aren't planning to make the next blockbuster right? well actually, I suppose you could, those crazy people did it with vx2000 and pd150 on open water...it looked horrible but, they made some money on it so my power to them! check out B&H Photo/Video they have a good used department, try ebay too. and dont forget to check the gate on these little cameras...they bad at that! hahaha
  8. Rammstein's awesome. My favorite band. Kamera ab!
  9. Homie's right its a 4:3 ratio...you need to talk to them again...they did you wrong.
  10. thanks frank. I've never seen any USC films, just stuff from Brooks Inst. got a lot of friends who go there.
  11. whoa, vague? I cant help with just that, probly couldnt help either way. hopefully someone else can help.
  12. Potential? YAY! there is HOPE! thanks for watching, and the generous compliment
  13. sweet! thanks man, I hope my teacher is that generous!
  14. We'll, I had to make a film in a hurry and that's what I did. Turns out everyone at my school really liked it so I though I'd share it with you. was the first time I ever tried doing a war piece, didnt know i was doing it til an hour before I shot. I thought of it when it was raining really hard and by the time we got all ready to shoot clear skies come about. So i grab a water hose and i could piss more water than that thing put out but this is how it came out. just check it out, all sorts of comments welcome, even the "what were you thinking? god that suck'd" comment is welcome. thanks, http://www.knowitallvideo.com/showvideo.jsp?i=1109229218115
  15. I always get stuck with some T3 or so for zooms. I'd love a T2.8, it is pretty fast.
  16. Super8 Vision2 500T under exposed and red...hmm this I'd like to see. can you put any stills up?
  17. David, you are a machine man. god please if I ever get an oppertunity like that dont let me break down and cry! sounds like you need some assistants david, I'll say hello to everyone for you haha. sorry I didnt give you a buzz man but this month for me is about half your issues on set and I didnt get around to tellin you I couldnt make it. But I really appreciate the offer. just hang in there man, stay strong! Allen Achterberg,
  18. better than what I am doing. give me tips bro. I could use 'em!
  19. well, I forgot about this but just in case anyone wants to know the answers it must have been the lab. did a few rolls of film and had them sent out (thats why such the delay) and they all came out fine. look for yourself. I'm pretty sure it was the lab. but oh well, problem gone so no worries mates.
  20. come on mate, answer the questions...is she cute? yeah, I agree with homie...I personally would have helped too, but only the once, then sent the bill to who ever was runnin the show. and yes, lack of pre production
  21. key words...horrible cheap and nasty...a good fast zoom is fairly expensive...a lot of video zooms do have decent speed but lack other places...
  22. ballsy. it would cost way too much to buy what you need. renting is the way to go, you should start pricing all this out and DONT FORGET PROCESSING AND TELECINE then add a budget, see if you can get donations from local busineses, figure out if you can afford to shoot it. I'm shooting my first 35mm short in 2 weeks, and most the crew members tossed in money and that helped. to have several people throw in some cash. Good Luck Bro. And forever live the Highschool dream whatever that means
  23. dont know if someone mentioned this, but NO movie mode...dont use it, its not even cool. shoot at a 30 shutter instead...get some motion blur, and dont lose the resolution! but remember if you get the PS Technik mount you are going to need lenses (which you may have to rent unless you got a few layin around) and that could end up being about the same price/day for an xl2...yoou money you choide
  24. dude, you are 16, you have PLENTY of time. just start doing it, 2 years ago I wanted to be a Director...then after working on some real shoots I found out what I really wanted to do and now do, Direct the Photography. and 2 years ago I was your age, so dont be like me and fall in love with a different girl, just start directing. Leave camera and lighting up to a DP which you need to hire...if you can get 10 grand, shoot a decent 16 short and then shoot a 35mm project. Will definately sepereate you from all the other chilrdren (they think DV is cheaper...which in a lot of higher end cases is the exact oppisite) Good Luck Kid!
