  1. Yes, This problem of all mechanical spring motor cameras. You don't have experience to use of 35 mm spring motor camera, like AKS-1, this camera have more hard spring. If you not love spring cameras, you need cameras with electrical motor ( like Kinor-16 SX-2M ). You not need load spring, Kinor don't have not spring, you press on start-stop button and camera run. You will need change of film magazines and battery only. The crank handle for the K3 the good device, but, the camera not change of maximum time of one shooting. This will 20..28 sec. If you wish shoot more long scenes, you need camera with electrical motor. Kinor-16 can have maximum time of non stop shooting - 10 minutes ( with 120 m magazine ).
  2. The paralleling of diode with DC input. I not support of this idea. This style of protect have not 100% of protect. If you connect battery with reversal polarity and diode open, the battery will short-circuit, will go big current and fuse will burn. But, the fuse will burn on a few millisecond. This time reversal polarity will go to electronics and can burn electronics too. The other situation, the diode can burn instantly ( to be reduced to ashes) and don't short-circuit of input. From other side, the every diode have " reverse current", this is very small volume. That's why, i choose set protective diode in series, i lost a some voltage ( Schottky Diodes, fast diode 0.2..0.3v, like SR5100-5a, MBR10100-10A, MBR20100- 20a ) but, i will have more high protection and not will have smoke, if i connect battery with reversal polarity. About extinguishing of self-inductive pulses of DC motor, the modern FET have protective diode. About "flicker free" shooting with HMI lighters. If you use HMI lighters with magnetic ballast, need choose sync speed of frequency AC main power. If this 50 HZ, the sync speed will : 100, 50, 33.333, 25, 20, 16.666, 14,285, 12. 5, 11.111, 10..... If this 60 Hz, the sync speeds will : 120, 60, 40, 30, 24, 20, 17.143, 15, 13.333, 12, 10.909 10. The analog speed control system can have precision 2.5 % and you can have " flisker " effect. The crystal sync speeed motors have precision 0.01%. About checking of power of battery. A some time ago, i begin to set of digital voltmeter in my motors. This is very good device show me condition of battery at any time. The digital voltmeter show me voltage with precision of 0.1 v That's why, i recommend to set some device of other filmmakers too. This is very easy. for 12 V, 7 ah battery. The voltage more 12.65 v ? 100% power of battery 12.4 v = 75% of power 12.2 v = 40% of power 12.0 v = 25% power 11.8 or less = discharger. The 18 v , 6+6+6v 4 ah battery: The voltage more 18.9 v ? 100% power of battery 18.7 v = 75% of power 18.4 v = 40% of power 18.1 v = 25% power 17.8 or less = discharger.

  5. I Don't know, what i can answer. The problem of " jams " can have many sources. I think, need test and test camera again, study of problem. The base axis of cogs wheel have adjustable washer for adjust of position of cogs wheel and rollers. Will need check position of The plastic film leader before rolles. And more other.
  6. Yes of course, I agree of all your idea about reliability of camera, motor, battery. I film maker too , I rate highly of reliable of equipments. 15EPSS motor not he height pink of perfection. This motor have merits and demerits, and the modification on 12 v battery can give you possibility use this motor now, but, not will improve of characteristics. I use 15EPSS motor long time, and my motor work fine with 6 v battery. I see The modern modification of 15EPSS motor on of design new power unit ans speed control module. About 17EP-16 APK motor. ===You don't think that replacing the motor electronics will improve reliability?? I think, to replace of the motor electronics on new style microprocessor control will improve reliability of 17EP-16APK motor and will add more modern possibilities. About protective diode. Yes, the protective diode will protect of electronics from connect of battery with reversal polarity. But, the protective diode cut a some voltage from battery ( 0.7 v ), thats' why, need use of fast diode. Yes, Konvas camera have very good mechanic, high quality lenses and modern electronics will give you reliability and modern possibilities. And many filmmakers use Konvas for shooting. But, any cine camera - complex system of precision optics and mechanics and need current maintenance and service. The russian cine cameras and lenses not sold on West too much at time of former USSR, because, big country -USSR need many cine cameras. That's why, not many west filmmakers know about russian equipments too much. But, now, i hope, we will change this situations and many west filmmakers can to estimate at one's true worth russian equipments and price.
  7. I not agree of idea " the electronics is the weak spot of the soviet cameras" too much, because, need divide electronic of 70 and 2000. About 15EPSS motor. This is motor design for military style motor with 27V DC. From other side, the battery with 27 v not possible and have big size. That's why, designer of 15EPSS motor to choose voltage changer from 8 v up to 52 v ( 27v+27v ). From other side, 15EPSS motor design for 5 pcs of 15 ah silver-zinc cells. If you take 8v and will need 50 W power and add efficiency of voltage changer you received big current. But, 15EPSS motor can work with low temperature -30C up to +40C. The power unit have special position of speed 24 fps for low temperature shooting. Yes, 15EPSS motor have power unit with big weigt, have analog system of speed stabilization. But, this motor can run camera on -30C. 15EPSS motor can be modify for use of 12 V battery. The original electronic of 17EP-16 APK, crystal sync motor, reliable, but, this is design of 80 and have 6 fixed speeds only. The near 90% of all faultiness of original electronic of 17EP-16 APK motor - connect battery with reversal polarity. near 5-10% - jammed of mechanism of camera or magazine. The modern film makers wish have more speeds, more technical possibilities and wish shoot with telecine post production for music video. They need speed for 50 Hz ( PAL ) and 60 Hz ( NTSC ) sync, need have slowing down and acceleration ( speeds : 16.6, 25, 33,3 fps for 50 hz sync and 20, 30, 40, fps for 60 hz sync) The new electronic of 17EP-16APK have more crystal sync speeds, especially for 60 Hz sync, have soft start of motor, manual adjust of phase of speed, low speed test run.   8. I agree with your idea. The every camera and every lens must be check before shooting. And the great, if the camera assistant can checking of camera and lenses. The russian crews had camera and optical technician on shooting area ( on time of former USSR ).   9. The set of Krasnogorsk-3 camera have M77 lens attachent for macro shooting. This is F-1734 mm, ( 0.6D ) lens. Meteor-5 zoom lens with 1734 mm atatchemnt will have distance of focusing 0.89m....1.74 m. You can set two or more F-1734 mm lens. Other idea. If you have Kransogorsk-3 with M42 I recommend to use russian macro lens Industar-61LZ MC 52 mm F2.8 Ths is lanthanum lens design for macro shooting with hogh resolition and contrast.   11. Hi Kev. You had jams. You need modify film channel on style of Kranosgorsk-1 camera. You need take away plastic leading on film channel, to check gaps between cogs wheel and rollers. You need keep size of loops and not set big size of loops, especially, upper loop. About base questions. I think, will need divide question of technical quality and price. You wish buy 16 mm cine camera with price of a few hundreds dollars and wish to have a characteristics of professional cine camera with price for a few tens a thousand dollars. Sorry, but, this is not possible on this world. Krasnogrosk-3 good camera and can be use for shooting of commercial and music video. The many film makers confirm this idea and use Krasnogorsk cameras. If you need camera with low noisy for shooting of dialogues, this can be special low noisy camera with electricalmotor and crystal sync speed, like Arri SR-3. If you wish camera with high stability of speed shooting, this must be camera with electrical motor and analog or crystal sync speed. If you wish low cost camera, this can be Kransgorsk-3. But, if you need 16 mm camera with low price and real professional quality, you need draw attention on russian Kinor-16SX-2M. Kinor-16 SX-2M, low noisy camera with electrical motor, 100 ft and 400 ft fast replace film magazines. Kinor have wide set of prime lenses from 6 mm up to 300 mm, zoom lenses 7.5-75 mm, 10-100mm, 12-120mm. The electrical motor can have analog system of speed stabilization and can be modify on modern microprocessor controlled system with many crystal sync speeds. Krasnogorsk-3 can use any type of 16 mm film, with perforation from one side ( 1R ) and with perforation from two sides ( 2 R ). The next question, what you will have after first footages with Karsnogrosk-3 camera - wide angle lens. The original zoom lens of Kranosgorsk-3 camera - Meteor-5 17-69 mm have not too wide angle. And the many film makers wish to use more wide angle lenses. If you choose Krasogorsk-3 with M42 screw mount, you can use Peleng 8 mm lens, but , this lens have distortion. If you choose Kranosgorsk-3 with bayonet mount, you can use 10 mm 12.5 mm wide lenses and modified zoom lens of Kinor-16 SX-2M camera 10-100 mm, 7.5-75 mm. You can think, what version of Kransogorsk-3 camera can be better for you. The next idea. Forget about TTL exposure meter of Kranosgorsk-3 camera. This is primitive exposure meter have big error and big inertia. That's why, the better, if you will use modern external digital exposure meter. The great sides of Kransogorsk cameras - reliability, simplicity and ready for shooting at any time and at any condition. You take camera and shoot. You not need battery. Kranosgorsk have small size and weigth. And you will have footages with good qulaity.
  12. A few technical notes. Konvas-2M russian 35 mm cine camera can have a few type of motors. This can be 15EPSS motor with analog system of speed stabilization and precision of speed control 2.5% ( on 24 fps ) and motors with crystal sync speed control : 17EP-16 APK, 18EP-16 APK, 19EP-16 APK, 5 BD-16 APK and other. This motors can have a few crystal sync speeds or all crystal sync speeds with precision 0.01%. All Konvas crystal sync motors can be modify on modern microprocessor control multi speeds system with speeds sync with 50 Hz and 60 Hz. The few difference between Konvas-2M and Arriflex IIC : - Konvas-2M mono lens mount design have reliable lens mount style of Arri PL or BNCR, - Konvas -2M have fast system of change of film magazine with film. You will need 2-3 sec for replace magazine with film. - Konvas-2M have fast removable motor and you can set any motor, at any time.
  13. I had similar test. I use Konvas-1 russian 35 mm cine camera with hand crank. You can have speeds up to 28 fps with hand crank. And the footages have good quality. The " old style " of footages have a few sides, the low speed, the not stable speed, soft lens and other. The otrher idea, use cine camera with mechanical spring motor. This can be russian 35 mm AKS-1 camera. This is camera have old style lenses too.
  14. Arri 235 very good camera. Modern, small size, small weight, compact. But, the price of body 38000 Euros ( if i correct ). If you have good budget, Arri 235 good choose. Frankly speaking, I love Arri Cam Studio more.
  15. Hi Brian I'm camera mechanic, repair and service of professional cine cameras and can tell you a some about your question. At first, The any cine camera- complex system of precision mechanical and optical parts. The every cine camera need simply servicing ( after 1000...2000 m of film) of film and this service you need make personally. Need clean film gate, film magazines, set oil on special point. But, the regular service not replace of complex service of camera. If you will interesting know more about complex service i can explain you with images. The camera need take to pieces, check condition of parts, clean, set new oil, assemble. But, the base side of this service - test of optical and mechanical characteristics of camera. Will need check and adjust of flange focal distance of lens mount and lenses, check position of ground glass, check position of mirror ( or mirror disk ) and more ets. All this procedures make with special high precision mechanical tools and optical tools ( collimator ). You have special measuring tools and collimator ? You have exprience do this ? You compare service of camera and service of car. The complex service and adjust of camera like you take to pieces of engine of your car. That's why, will be better, if the complex service will make professional mechanic. You wish spare money, but, you can pay for film, processing, telecine service and receive footages with bad quality.

  17. (sorry, for post duplicating, soft fault) The overexposure good idea, and i use this idea on shooting. The batter, if the negative will have overexposure, when underexposure. But, i think, overexposure of 1 stop can be too much. If you told about this images, possible. I choose volume of overexposure from a few sides. This is film dynamic range. ( Kodak show film dynamic range for every film very good ). 7277 have -3 ..0 + 7 stops and show darkness scale very good. The style of scene, many lights or many details on darkness. Any case, the use of overxposure 1/2 stop normal for me. ( 250 ASA for 320 T film ). I make a some test with scene like on first image. I take two candlelights and set on 0.3 m near face, i had F1.4 with 2000ASA of film( 25 fps ). But, not need forget about big highlight from left side of image.

I shoot of test card on start of every roll and on every new scene or new lighters setting ( If need ). This test card included Kodak grey scale,( for control of correct exposing ) Kodak color scale ( for adjust of color with telecine ) and 3 squares : white, grey, black ( for telecine adjust). If i cast doubt on aperture calculation, i take my digital photo camera ( Casio QV-4000) shoot of scene, read speed of shutter and aperture and read bar graph. I know speed of sensor of Casio and can calculate correct aperture for cine shooting. Yes, possible, this is not batter way, but, this work If need, i use Photoshop and show bar graph of important parts of image. I can send images for exaple.

  20. I have a few additional ideas. At first, need check quality of of negative. I agree with idea to check quality of negative by view with magnifier with white screen. This first step, what need do. You can print photos from cut's of negative on any photo lab. You can take computer film photo scanner and scan cuts from negative too. If you will see good quality of image, you will need re-transfer of negative. You have complex scenes from lights setting and measuring. About next steps of post production. You lost a some quality with convert from Digibeta on Mini DV , I think, 4x..6x. Possible, will be good idea the scan negative by Arri scanner to computer file without compression on high light, but, this high cost service. What final format of footages you must have after edit ? If you can not re-transfer of negative, I recommend to transfer Digibeta on computer file and edit footages on computer.
  21. I hope, the film was fresh ? You shoot test image with gray and color scale ? What format of footages you received from Telecine ? Possible, this was computer file of Dpx 10 bit log ? and you open by After Effects ? You can make simply test. Take cut of negative and print photos on photo lab. The result can show you quality of negative.
  22. Hi. If you will need handheld camera with minimum price, this is russian Konvas-2M. Konvas-2M can have crytsal sync motor, you can modify on Arri PL and use any Carl Zeiss lenses. But, russian LOMO lenses have high quality too. Konvas have 200 ft and 400 ft film magazines. Konvas-2M with 200 ft magazine ( without film ) have weight near 5.8 kg, size near 295 x 280 x 245 mm.
  23. I agree with idea of Richard . You had one or a few solution of chemistry with small volume. The user manual of LOMO, UPB-1A ( S8/16 x 50 ft ) tank wrote : - for processing one Super 8 film need 0.85 L - for processing two Super 8 films need 1.3 L - for processing one DS8. D8, 16 mm films need 1L - for processing two DS8, D8, 16 mm films need 1.8 L - for processing one 35 mm film need 1.7 L. From my personal experience, i use 2 L for processing two Super 8 or two 16 mm films. The processing of Ektachrome film need high stability of temperature of solution. If you take cold tank with film and flood solution, the temperature solution will diminish. That's why, i use pre-bath of water with temperature of first B&W developer. From one side this is step stabilize of temperature film and tank body , from other side, the emulsion get soaked. You need move off air-bladders from emulsion, I knock on handle of spiral. The technology of rotation of spiral: The fast one or two turn of spiral, waiting of 10 sec. The technology of rotation of spiral will influence on color balance of film.
  24. If you wish good quality music video, you need use 35 mm shooting with digital post production. But, a budget of 7000 pound sterling ( near $13200 ) super low for this technology. But, You can choose Super 16 camera and telecine transfer to video. For Ukraine, your budget for 3.5 minutes music video - limited, but, possible. We shooted a few music video with similar budget. We can create and recording of sound tracks too. If you will interesting a some price of budget of shooting, i can give you. ( rent of Arri 16SR3 with lenses and minimum grip $650 per day. 1x 120 roll of Kodak $160..180 processing $0.75 / 1 m telecine service 3 x 120m rolls near one hour of transfer, $350 But, i worry , for UK this is can be very low budget Possible, you will need choose HDCAM, but, i prefer use cine cameras.
  25. Hi I had experience to send 16 mm Kodak color negative film from Ukraine to Germany by air parcel post ( Andec company ) for processing and Telecine transfer. I received processed film and video cassette. I used original metal cans for packing. And all was OK. If you wish protect of your Super 8 film, you can use metal cans from 120 m rolls of film or other .
