  1. The dvx is a pretty sweet camera that you really should not use as your deck.. The quality of the camera makes no difference in capturing (unless its heads are dirty) so use your cheap canon and you will be fine.
  2. What you need to do is use use mini-dv camera as a link between the dvd player and premiere. Setup up your dv camera in VCR mode to an AV-in function (most pro sumer cameras can do this such as the vx2000), play your dvd through the dvd player then capture from camera using premiere. hope this helps
  3. I found a cheap jvc camera that was being sold because it could only play back, and not record.. got it for $30 and its been running ever since as my backup deck. cant beat that. capturing off of an expensive camera is a big no no. tapes made by certain manufacturers can leave a nasty residue on your cam heads. I learned that the hard way.
  4. I've had this problem many times when I used to go back and forth from different source cameras. The best solution is to get a hold of or barrow a good deck as these tend to read better. The problem you describe (I'm guessing your refereeing to digital artifacts and breakage) is usually caused by a dirty Camera head. Its possible your cannon needs to be cleaned. The other issue is also the quality and make of your dv tapes and the quality of the camera you are using to capture with. There are a lot of factors involved with this kind of problem but your best bet is to only shoot with quality tapes made by the manufacturer of your camera and use a good deck for capturing.
  5. so maybe I'll use that old film for my test roll... Ian or Nick, can you walk me through the basics of loading my first roll and shooting my first roll? I wanted to shoot a test classic perspective panning shot of a train going by at the station. Think Lumiere with a pan as the train goes by. Also, the camera came with a nice German made lightmeter, but it needs a new battery. Thank you
  6. Received my camera a few days ago and it looks like its almost in new condition. I will shoot some tests soon. Thanks for all the help. Included was two unopened tri-x reversal film marked with the expiration date 1967. I'm guessing this film cannot be used even for tests....right?
  7. what do you guys think about the American Cinematographer Manual... anybody own it?
  8. overrated director... overrated film in too many ways I don't feel like explaining right now. His films make people feel smart and sensitive. Pretty simplistic and too slick in a bad way. I would say he's a pretty good American director and thats it. All this in MY OWN OPINION of course..
  9. Here are some very low res grabs from the vx2000... There was no light setup, and the room was quite dark.
  10. First I would say the kind of camera you get really depends on the project you want to make. Almost every type of athstetic or technique can be justified with a good concept. I've seen artists make films with almost no money that blow Hollywood away as far as originality and poetic merit. But they will never look like what you see on tv or on those multi-million dollar productions. Also, many young filmmakers just try to copy popular anesthetics without really giving them a function which ends up being very superficial. As far as cameras, like everybody said, its going to be near impossible to get a "good" minidv camera for that price. The dvx is way out of your price range and even a sony vx2000 (which I would say is the minimum camera with decent manual controls, one of the lowest lux rating, and large ccds) will run you more then a $1000. I purchased a new vx2000 on eBay for $1500 and the images it produced for my documentary are satisfactory. Renting a pro or Hd 3 chip dv cam looks like your only option if your set on shooting video. Hope this is helpful.
  11. The buy it now link was actually the second chance offer he sent me through ebay so I hope its legit... meaning I already sent him money through papal. so far everything looks legit.. matching emails, matching paypal account, etc. This is my first venture from video into film and the rex packages were easily going over $1000, so I thought this was a good starting point. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I am shooting a documentary in 24p and I want to integrate some 16mm. To nick: I am working in sd video so do you still think I should try modifying to super 16? As far as lenses with the m4, I understand that the lack of a reflex means I am limited to lenses with a viewfinder. Are there any other lenses I should be looking for and is there a way to bypass this limitation? What else do I need before I start shooting (Except for film of course) that would be useful? Thank you
  12. I was bidding on this camera about two weeks ago and even though I was the high bidder, the reserve price was not met. The seller contacted me yesterday and offered the camera at my last bid :) Anyway, I would like to get as much information on the camera and was is included. I know its an M4 but I'm new to 16mm and need more info. Here it is my new bolex
  13. I know this is off topic, but how much should one expect to pay for the rex 4 in good condition?
