  1. Oh yes indeed we have Tesco in Ireland! Gobbled up 30 percent of the market! Can I buy it in Tesco?
  2. I showed the poster to my 10 year old, (Rosie) and she said where can we see it ? So where can we see it uncle Richard ? I said I know the Director :-)
  3. The question was......Would you ever hire a DOP based on their showreel? Started By Maxim Ford, Dec 14 2013 12:50 AM I have never to my knowledge been hired by anyone who happened upon my showreel. My jobs come from people who know me and/or have worked with me. But I have been recommended to producers/directors who did want to see something I've shot and the showreel got me the gig and often didn't. I can't say it more Eloquently than Adam has. It's a fickle business!
  4. If the Director is an experienced camera op with all the necessary skills and can find the time to direct as well I have no problem with it. In my experience however this is almost never the case and ultimately reflects badly on the DP. I have worked with a director who also fancied himself as a Cameraman and you can see every badly framed, focus issued shot that made the cut and probably wouldn't have made it had it been another operator.
  5. OMG. Yes! I remember it now! The 12 steps! Used in other applications I've been told!
  6. In fact that post should be sent to every film school in the world!
  7. So It's a 2k RAW Camera in the form of a 16mm Bolex? When I was a student I used to have a telephone in the form of a duck! It was Fun for a while!
  8. Lots of children everywhere, seems to me if your in the film business and you make a film for a child audience and get a remark like that from a 5 year old you go home with a big smile on your face! Or do I need to be more cynical?
  9. Thanks Stephen! Excellent frame choices!
  10. Best reel I've seen in a long time! It's a wonder you need one! :-)
  11. Just tried it, no problem changing display name! Must be a Kiwi thing Gregg:-) Maybe your just too far away?
  12. I've shot 2 commercials with the BMCC would that get me into the party? Just crash it otherwise?
  13. Will you be anywhere specific Phil? I was at the CML party last year which was pretty cool but Geoff had some problems with the venue They tried to over charge him so I don't know if that will be on this year.
  14. Ok I will bite once more! The winning the Oscar thing is what most Cinematographers object to. That's ok! In fact I agree that there were More worthy candidates than Life of Pi, but!! The Oscars is a popularity contest for the most part! We have to judge the film on It's own Merits not just Cinematography! Chris Doyle is an extraordinary Cinematographer but the whole " I know I will die with either a camera in my hand or..." thing sounds like my 17 year old son who is a gem BTW but has a lot of growing up to do! He will get there but I wonder if Chris will ever get there. Maybe that's what makes him special!!
  15. Second that Phil! Feels like I've been Tardis'd back a decade! I shoot mostly commercials and by july I would be on about 15 normally. I've shot three!! Got one coming up in August but that's it for now! I've gone back to TV to earn a living this year. Lucky to have friends in the industry that throw you a lifeline! Wish I could write like you though:-)
  16. Are you talking about Janusz Kaminski! On this site ? sorry I missed that!
  17. Is it with the wider lenses your seeing this? Might be a flange focus problem.
  18. http://www.redsharknews.com/production/item/889-luminance-shedding-light-on-the-role-of-brightness-in-photography Phil writes so good It makes it geeky proof!!
  19. What happened to "Love Freya"? Cinematography has changed! We really need to get to grips with the realities! This film could not have been made without CGI! Or could have been made conventionaly but the producers would have balked at the budget and the film would not have been made! Getting the film made is what I think is important and if you've read the book "which I would recommend" they got it spot on! How much CGI is too much if it tells the story? Love, Kieran
  20. Were good Jason! Good to have different angles on these things and see them from different perspectives as camera people. Check this workshop from David Mullen ASC. You'll learn a lot!
  21. Well then we must agree to disagree! I respect Chris Doyle's skill as Cinematographer and actually really love his "style" I wish I had the opportunity to do it. But when you criticize another colleague and say that his work is "A total **(obscenity removed)** piece of poop" you must quantify that statement! Back it up in some way professionally otherwise It's just shouting stuff out loud! And his argument that it was 97% out of Miranda's control is well....just not true!
  22. "Okay. I’m trying to work out how to say this most politely, and no offence to – I don’t know him personally – but what a total **(obscenity removed)** piece of poop," "Let me be blunt. Ah, **(obscenity removed)**. I don’t care, I’m sure he’s a wonderful guy and I’m sure he cares so much, but since 97 per cent of the film is not under his control, what the **(obscenity removed)** are you talking about cinematography, sorry. I’m sorry. I have to be blunt and I don’t care, you can write it. I think it’s a **(obscenity removed)** insult to cinematography." This is what Chris said about Life of Pi! Now to me this is not a ballsy statement, this sounds like frustration and jealousy! If you had balls you would nitpick it technicaly say how it did'nt work for you visually and how you!! would have approached the film as a cinematographer. The fact is Claudio Miranda did a stalwart job on Life of Pi exactly what Ang Lee wanted and as a Cinematographer that's all that's required. As for winning an Oscar…Well the Oscars may once have been a measure of the best in our industry but no more I'm afraid, If that were the case then Roger Deakins would have four.
