  1. Were you running with the CE base or with the pistol grip? Were the mags OK? What battery were you using? I assume the cam is fine at normal temp - if you don't have a CE base you can use a strobe light to check - quite easy actually Was the camera and mags and film standing outside for hours before you ran the camera - so was the cam body really cold I haven't used my 2C in temp that low but at about -3C and have not had any problems. I have had problems when I don't use Cinepower batteries. I always try and keep the cam, the mags and the batteries warm and away from the cold as long as possible - and not leave it on legs outside for hours - but that might be more for my solo insurance than the temp :-) and not having a heated eyepiece thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  2. It is a head trp to see 45 - in a vertical frame - wonder if anyone ever turned a projector sideways and shot 1.85 : 1 thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  3. Does anyone know anywhere one can rent these lights in the UK - except Sola - not that I have any problems with Sola - they are really good More looking for someone who has one lying around thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  4. I stand corrected :-) Slightly off topic about Harris - I spoke to Mark R (name dropping) about some help I needed for a project I did and we were talking about the Rain Video by Madonna - and talking about Harris and his lighting (not that I know Harris at all) - I wanted the same effect as they had used in the Rain video where they are surrounded by the shells of light and Mark was saying about how they had to go through a whole process of getting most of the lights built for that video - So another thing Harris does is design great lights Thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  5. I would first make a decision about why you want a camera and a projector - what are you intending to do with it - Check out some of the posts on the 35mm section about it - stuff like http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...p?showtopic=256 then rule number one - get someone else to pay for it - rule 2 - they will only do that if there is a great script (at least that is what I have heard :-) thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  6. Also check out http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...?showtopic=1878 thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  7. In the UK - you can call kodak- who will send you about 10 rolls of 35mm motion picture film free (the stock you want) - in normal slr packaging - with stickers all over it - saying don't go anywhere near C41 processing Once again in the UK you can take it to Soho Images and get it devloped - sometimes they will want to charge extra since they don't have the machine to get the film out of the roll - 2 options : either manualy roll back and leave a short strip - or go into Snappy Snaps and they have a machine that will open it for you and takes about 1 sec (basically it pulls out about 7 cm of neg) I saw the RGB lab sign in Hollywood recently - RGB Labs (816 North Highland Avenue, Hollywood, CA 90038, 323-469-1959) hope that helps - I couldn't find their website - call Dr Rawstock they might know thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  8. I was really really impressed with "Birth" - it hasn't done hugely well in the UK (from what I can see) but I hope it becomes one of those timeless classics - I noticed what I thought was an art dept decision to make the time period indeterminate (except for the 04 tax sticker in the car window at the graveyard) and I had a continuity issue with the snow in the tunnel... but hey It was an subtle, well crafted, actors movie I think it is one of those movies - if you don't get it in the first 10 min then you won't - which as great as they are are not always finacially sucessful - I fell in love from the jogging scene - but I am sure many people who haven't seen "Gerry" - wouldn't dig it - (after watching Gerry - which my girlfriend walked out of! - I can handle long takes :-) And considering the capabilites of Harris - I would very much doubt they made mistakes with exposure (as I have heard) - yeah some of it was very under - but it worked for me - and wether or not it was intended - I felt it helped the story my 2 cents Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  9. Thanks for the post J-Ro I assume from your post they shot in some kind of white infinity cove (pre-existing or studio made) - shooting HMIs up at angles to light each room - then over the set they hang Bleached Muslin and used chinese lanterns So my questions were the Chinese lanterns moving with the camera What did they do for the steadicam shots Did Harris do anything funky for the windows was there much use of lighting from practicals thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  10. You could stick ND on the windows to bring it in range of the room - or pump more light into the room - instead of making adjustments hope that helps Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com

    24P

I have finally got my own 35mm Camera - and shot a test dance music video for someone all at 24fps - not one high speed shot - but the weird thing I never noticed before is shooting 24fps the movement takes on a different look because if these dancers move quicker than 1/48th of a second it looks like stuff is missing (which I like) someone thought the film had been inferno-ed , cause their movement seems to jump - (4 of these wonderful people dance for Janet! so I assume they can move quickly) Like a magician trick or if you see the bullet flash in the viewfinder then the film missed it I can post a link to the video if you like thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  12. I tend to shoot dance pieces and was thinking about adding a slide viewer somewhere around the mattbox as a gentle eyelight or else turning the transvideo around to create a tiny eyelight Camera is always moving.. what do you think? thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  13. I should have been clearer - the tape on the can is useless - I was talking about the tape to close the roll of film when it comes out of the black bag out of the new can - a short piece of tape (3cm or so) that has stock info on it Quote " closing the roll with the original tape end " not the can thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  14. loading. I have seen so many different ways of loading and marking cans - so one day I went into Fotokem and asked their nice lab guys what they wanted. I got some horror stories - mainly student films where they open the mag up in the shop - or put exposed neg in old milk cartons (with milk in them!) etc etc But they said all they (the bath guys) really need is the stock , the length, the production name and any special processing notes (push, pull, skip bleach etc) When it goes to TK etc - then there a whole lot more requirements (format, etc etc) Having said that - packing the exposed stock in cans using the black bag the new kodak stock comes in is useful, closing the roll with the original tape end (with its stock type - just leave the label in the can)- Putting a spool in the exposed roll as it comes off the mag helps stop the roll go oval - not that it really makes any major difference) and some other stuff I can't remember thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  15. The 3 perf one is pretty quiet - check their website http://www.aaton.com/products/film/35/35specs.php It is a nice camera but much more expensive than a 2C non crystal thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  16. I have a question about the 4 pin accesory connection on the arri crystal speed base for the 2C: the small connection above the 4 pin power option : The good guys at Otto Nemenz told me it can be used to remote control the camera (On and Off) - does anyone have any ideas about which pin does what? thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  17. I know of one model and I don't know how easy it would be to convert - the model is 35-2CB/V. The 2C has a weird butterfly type shutter (check out Jon Fauers Arriflex book ) for info on it thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  18. cinetape is the standard I have seen http://www.cinematographyelectronics.com/ make cinetape but it is expensive! thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  19. what are the format options and costs to get S35, Anamorphic and 3 perf for the arri 2C thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  20. To get a practical working ARRI 235 package is closer to 60000 Euros Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  21. I have only found one error with the 7218 - and it had to do with TK - when TKed on a CCD scanner it looked so much better thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  22. I have always been into the test - only way to really check anything- As regards camera choice - weight is a big concern which is pushing me in the direction of a good 2C rather than a 1st gen 35-3 (but who knows) - and price ( I am assuming I can get a PL Hardmount with CE base for $8k ish - whereas 12k is a starting price for a decent 35-3) and it is a difficult camera to get into handheld - also - any more money and I can't justify the purchase But as regards some of my earlier questions re testing kit in LA what do I need to take with me (tent etc) and where are good places to get stock (shorts ends as well) and a good place to get a quick dev of the neg - and how much price negotiation are people open to... thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  23. The feedback has been great - I will be in LA in November for 2 weeks and am looking at advice on the testing procedures for buying a camera - for example in the UK I would go to the good folks at ICE (if I was buying from them) - shoot a test ( with my stock often a short end) of their charts, film loaded in their tent - with their lens - walk around the parking lot doing speed tests , shooting birds and skies etc (not much use:-) then I would get drop it off at the overnight bath at Soho Images - pick it up the next day - go back to ICE and use their projector to check - haggle price So I need to be prepared - what do I need to take with me (tent etc) and where are good places to get stock (shorts ends as well) and a good place to get a quick dev of the neg - and how much price negotiation are people open to. I will be in the Hollywood area (dealing with the main shops, Otto Nemenz etc) thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com

    Arri 2C

I see speeds of up to 80fps with a CE base and 2 x 12V batteries - but I have heard that going anywhere over about 40 fps on an Arri 2C is unstable - is this based on a steadiness test where you rewind the footage and reshoot - then playback and check bounce around - I would assume with single claw feeding - that you would get steadiness issues irrespective of running it through the gate only once. What would be the fastest anyone has run footage through a 2C - and how stable was it vs a stability test - the reason I ask is I shoot Indie dance things and having 50fps would be nice.... thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
  25. I am fairly new to it all and have seen the cinetape tool but at $7000 it is a little pricey - has anyone used the building trade ultra sonic measuring devices which are available (for about $100) thanks Rolfe Klement www.creativesunshine.com
