  1. Really nice images! I wonder whether narrowing the light beam and reducing the intensity a little further on the 2 girls in bed would have given you steeper fall off. Cheers S
  2. I couldn't agree more Drew...the Gaffer who laughed at our fellow really needs to stop and look at himself! Cheers S
  3. Hey Kevin, Thanks for the stills. It seems to me that the flare desaturates the image and reduces the contrast too. I wonder whether that is my screen...or its a fact. On the first example(5218) why did you add a ND.6 on the primo shot? Cheers S
  4. Does anyone know what was strapped around his waist when talking about handheld movement? It really looks like a good thing..... Cheers S
  5. Hey Adrian, Can you help? I've uploaded my pic but it doesn't show when I post... Cheers S
  6. Does anyone know how he achieved the greeny-orange look? Cheers S
  7. I think a top DP will always provide you with less sleepless nights. Saying that, I believe in ability and not years of experience. Have a look at this link. http://www.keithschofield.com/ This guy is a 23 year old director who has just finished shooting the last Supergrass single. Unfortunately most ppl would look at his age rather than his ability and think "he doesn't have enough experience...I mean he's only 23!!!". He approached the vid with no fear and it came out wonderfully! In reference to equipment. I believe that you can cut corners and improvise on certain things. But also, you need that filter to give you the look you want, the car mount to give you a nice angle, that jib to give you a lovely smooth movement etc.... On many occasions when I AC'd I saw DP's not using 3/4 of their gear. But they looked the part.......the saying, 'selling your fish' applies here! Cheers S
  8. I didn't know Rodrigo Prieto was a member.....good news! Hey Rodrigo, if you get a moment can you just give us an answer on this rumour. AC's keep telling me that "Chivo' got to DP a well funded feature fresh out of Polish Film school.......once an entertaining conversation/rumour on set, but with time it now needs closure. Btw congrats on Lust, Caution! Thoroughly enjoyed it!! Was the language barrier a tough issue to deal with in your mostly oriental crew? Cheers S
  9. Any chance Tim could put this advice as an auto response to anyone that posts with the heading "Becoming a DP?"? Cheers S
  10. Thats right...they've gone with 'Chivo' for their next film. By the AC mag, Deakins was already commited on another job. It will be interesting! Looking forward to it.... Maybe someone can clarify a rumour that I've been hearing for a while on sets.....Did 'Chivo' get a big feature as DP immediately after leaving the Polish Film school? Cheers S
  11. I shot daytime with 500 once (ran out of 200 on set with 2 quick scenes to do) and I had to use so much ND to get my stop that it was virtually impossible to see through finder. Additionally, there will be grain issues. If your problem is lack of light why not use slower stock and push it? Cheers S
  12. I always rate 500 asa stock as 400 asa as it renders a lovely density. S
  13. Do you know if it will time-lapse your movements? Which obviously will be created in real time....... S
  14. Hi Guys, I'm trying to compile a photographic reference folder for the director on a job I've got coming up and was wondering if anyone out there had some Kodak 500T, 200T & 250D (18&19) 35mm stills that skipped bleach? Many thanks in advance. Cheers S
  15. I think Deakins has been for many years at the top of his game. Will he be treated as Scorcese was? I sincerely hope not..... The man that wasn't there, O' Brother Where Art Thou, Fargo, Village, No country for old men, Assasination of Jesse James, In the Valley of Elah...... I certainly feel inspired by his work. More so, I feel inspired by the fact that he really appreciates the Coens Bros, as Directors that really understand the photographic process. They are apparently really anal about the storyboarding. Personally, I always try and convince the directors that I work with to be meticulous about storyboarding. It reduces the possibility of problems arising in that dept and also allows you space to deal with other issues that crop up during production. On a different note, does anyone know which company holds the 'deakinizers'? Cheers S
  16. To everyone, As of interest, is there a set number that you like to time at? Or you just base it on the feel of each project? Cheers S
  17. Although kinos work I really like to have a small fresnel next to cam with narrow doors bounced off some white card. I feel it renders a nicer ping from the eyes. Just my opinion. Cheers S P.S If using table as fill then a white cloth or surface would work. Look at "Lust, Caution" as an example.
  18. Yeah good work there mate! Cheers S
  19. Chris, Great idea! My primary loves lie in surfing which I've done since I was 7 (now 33), although rarely these days due to work and also the journey to the waves from London is a long'un(bit of cockney for you). Playing football(aka soccer) figures massively in my life when I'm not working. My club is the mighty Chelsea FC. I love eating good food...I'm not overweight but I am half portuguese and our culture embraces good food! Rarely do I find a book that really grips me. I know there are some great writers out there but if the story doesn't get me in the first 20 pages then I lose interest. I'm not a great drawer but a great admirer of Art. Caravaggio, Dali and my missus are my favorite artists. Last Sept saw a great Dali exhibition at the Tate. It covered his journey which of course included his take on our beloved passion.......ooops nearly said it! I think that kinda covers it for me. Cheers S
  20. Does that mean that it doesn't give you an F-stop reading? S
  21. I don't have experience with this meter. If you have everything on your meter set up to practical achievable values my hunch is that something with the mechanism is not right and it is not a lack of knowledge on your part. I would contact sekonic minolta and ask for their opinion. Otherwise someone else in here that has experience with this meter might be able to help. Good Luck! Cheers S
  22. Really cool that you built your own! The focus didn't seem to settle for you and the highlights seemed to halate quite a bit. Cheers S
