  1. Blade, what you are saying does not mean you have a thin skin. A thin skin feeling only manifests itself when you find yourself not being able to deal with the rejections or with the fact that 'they' are ignoring 'you'. It just means that you really care about what you do and that you are also a bit nervous as you feel that one 'strike and your out' applies. Which it can do in certain situations.... Everybody, be it at the top of the food chain or at the bottom, makes mistakes. That is why you often hear the saying that, it is from your mistakes that you learn more. Amongst others, this is also a reason why being trusted in our industry takes a long time. I mean, everybody knows that anyone is prone to a mistake every now and again but the more time you spend perfecting your job the less likely down the line you'll make silly rookie mistakes. I believe this is why producers and directors etc...are more condusive to take some seriously who has been in the industry for 10 yrs+. In my experience feeling vulnerable, exposed is immediately remedied by total honesty and by being upfront.
  2. Is it for tv? The majority of interviews on tv, that are shot in tungsten, are lit with a 1/2 ctb backlighting the subject. Interviews (unless for something arty) are very formulaic. Lighting - make sure you don't get double shadows on face, create a decent separation between background and foreground, make background interesting. Camera - make sure you frame them in the opposite side to the direction they are talking to. Now if you are going for something that is a bit more tasteful (in my opinion), then you can refer to the "man on the wire", also the dvd that the ACmag sells, the name escapes me right now, which is based on conversations with cinematographers.
  3. For me all of the LotR's, Conan, Labyrinth, Flash Gordon (does this count?) and also Willow....that's all I can remember for now.
  4. I unfortunately never had the pleasure to meet Jack but I was always told that he was a very nice guy. Big shame to loose such a great cinematographer and a nice guy. RIP Jack
  5. You tube has been a phenomenon in what it has achieved. I still don't use it to its full potential, which I only realise when I visit my much younger brother. But in terms of quality I'm always impressed by vimeo. The image looks great on there! For ppl who might think that I'm about to make a stand for film, I'm not. I am primarily a film lover but I'm not against shooting digital. The thing that cheeses me the most about our industry, is that we have allowed ourselves to become part of this hunger ball that has been generated by the companies which produce digital cameras. Their marketing ploy is much in the same way that other companies use for other products which target the mass market. Be it selling, burgers, cars, bank accounts...whatever. I honestly sometimes feel insulted....our industry is a specialised environment or have I just spent all these years swimming upstream for something that is being looked upon in the same way as a standard car? We're not the bog standard motor vehicle that joe bloggs drives....we are the equivolent of the Formula 1!! are we not????? If the Sony's, Red's etc etc...really cared about providing our industry with a great alternative then why not concentrate in creating and perfecting what we want!? But no their tact is, 'lets hype up the market with all the "This is the best thing since sliced bread, better resolution, cheaper output etc..marketing" and create a line of several different cameras, which will become obsolete in 18 months, so that we can make poop loads of money.' I completely understand that that is business.....but why oh why do we have bite the hook all the time?! As an example, look at Glaxo Smithkline, they have the knowledge to create a drug that, for example, can cure the flu. But there is no money to be made from curing the flu. The money is made in curing the symptom!! End of rant.
  6. Yeah you're right Walter....the pro's are scarily mature for their age!!
  7. Working with children requires a director that can tap into a child's imagination. There was a documentary, which I saw a long time ago, about "Encounters of the third kind" and in it, there was a scene that showed Spielberg brilliantly tapping into his lead child's mind so that he could deliver the right feeling for the scene....a good one to check out! Also find out what the child likes to do in play time....computer games, dolls, lego etc....a previous experience that I had where a lead child just burst out crying in between scenes, led me to pull out my iphone and got her to play a game on the phone. I believe it was tap tap.....my kid's favourite! It worked a treat! good luck!
  8. Could it be that on film you tend to always shoot with tungsten stock? I almost always do....
  9. If you figure that there will be tons of blue then I would definitely get an IR filter. Good luck with it and it would be great to know how it worked out for you.
  10. Hey Jamie, I think he did with the comment of ".....color shift to blue-green should be way too small to worry about." I'm also feeling a bit apprehensive as I have a shoot with the red soon but from what I perceive from previous posts, the red tends to have a lot of noise in the blue channel.... The general consensus I'm getting is that the IR filter should always be implemented. As for the 85 that would only come in use if you shoot with tungsten lights. As the cmos chip in the red is daylight balanced. If I'm wrong, please, someone, correct me.

    RED...

LOL!! I got lost on that too....
  12. Hi Joe, It's a pain in the arse(ass for US fellows) when you have to deal with something like this. However, I think this exercise is great for you as it's completely replicating what you need to deal with, more often than not, outside of film school. IMO I wouldn't single him out. Nobody likes to be made to feel as an exception. As the Director (am I right in assuming that you are in this new project?) I would get your all of your crew together and reiterate to everybody how you want the ship to sail. Like that you are not casting him out and more like including him in it. Also, if he deviates then you have full group support in whatever action you decide to take. It's not like he wasn't warned! I'm sure it will be fine and hope that your shoot goes well. Good Luck!
  13. I was just dreaming of the possibility of being able to roll through different ASA's, like on my meter, without having to go through the technical avenue and testing. Cheers John! ;)
  14. Does that mean that the red allows you to jump through asa's in the menus?

    RED...

Hi Jim, I 2nd what John Brawley is saying. Personally, the obvious rush to get a product out that was full of problems and the marketing that tried to persuade me that it was the messiah, was the reasons behind my doubtful and suspicious views. You say that we hate your product on this forum but from what I read the majority say good things. It's just the marketing..... Heck, I've just recommended the red on 2 ads I've got coming up. And I've never used the red! There are 3 reasons why I've recommended it. 1 - the digital look 2 - budget 3 -information and experiences from the members on this forum. I'm looking forward to it and I shall post my experience with it.

    RED...

Hi Jim, It's interesting to read your post. One question - Why do you think your product gets such hard challenges thrown at it and others don't?
  18. This is a beautiful video Definitely looks HD....but which camera? High fps makes me think that its a Phantom.... http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8pdue_he...video-rem_music
  19. Hey Paul, I certainly don't feel that I poop on anyone in here or outside of here.... Don't take my questioning as a representation of my lack of interest in the red. It's part of my job to be up on every single bit of technology that allows me to be the best that I can be in my line of work. Without wanting to get into a massive debate about this, what you are mistaking is that most people who challenge red, is because red is dressed up as the Messiah by the marketing machine. We are told in great cultish language, "you/we want 4k digital....then I/we announce that finally your wishes are answered! The red IS 4K!!!" well, we all know it's not....etc, etc... Without these challenges, red or any other new technology wouldn't improve and serve our needs.
  20. Hey Ian, I've recently seen some in and art shop called Atlantis but I haven't tested them. If memory serves me right there was a mention on a past topic that said that they're no good for our line of work....I'm not sure but I could be wrong.
