  1. Hi guys! What will, in your opinion and experience, give a finer grain on 16mm? shooting 100 asa, rating 100 asa. shooting 200 asa, overexposing it a stop and bringing it down in telecine. The stocks used, most probably will be: Vision2 7212 100T and Vision2 7217 200T. The final project will be going straight to 2K scan, no print. I will do tests hopefully next week, and post the results. But just out of curiosity - is there even a point doing this? Will I get a finer grain out of overexposing and then pulling back, than simply shooting 100? What else will I get by overexposing a stop? More info in shadows? Even comparing to 100asa? Thanks a lot in advance!
  2. Thanks David! If image quality and grain size are main priorities, would you say you would prefer to do this kind of shift in post rather than doing it with filters?
  3. It's more of a situational question, really. I mean my question is more: if NOT correcting the colour with lighting - would you rather do it with filters on lens, or in post?
  4. Hi! Shooting a short in June. Currently in full-on pre-production. While doing research on stocks, realised I left an important question unanswered. Shooting tunsgten stock, I want the picture to have a bit of a 'coldness'. But will not do it through lighting. Would you suggest a. using filter at all times, b. leaving it to grading? The factors that may influence the decision: most probably shooting fairly slow stock - 100 or 200. as well as will be overexposing by 2/3 already, to get less grain. looking for the tightest grain possible. the key light sources at most of the times will be HMIs. will go through grading process after the picture is locked at post-production stage anyway - to even out the shots etc. Thanks a lot in advance!
  5. Very nice. I don't agree on putting the blind man short film the last in the whole showreel. But generally - some very very nice images.
  6. Thanks a lot, guys! Shot the short, used 5D as reference time-to-time. Mainly to check the colour temperatures. Found that 5D is way less sensitive in darks than 7219. Shot a scene with the key 2 stops under (0.7) - part of the "practicals only" idea on exterior part of the film. Was really worried - stills looked very-very dark. And rushes came back just fine.
  7. Do you know what you have more of? Did you shoot more than the short end you have left? If you do - just weight the boxes and figure out which one is which :)
  8. Conflict of colours and shapes. Contrast. Depends on story.
  9. Oh yeah. Couple days ago. £460 for 5 rolls of 400ft to DigiBeta+MiniDV rushes. This is a lot for a 2nd year student budget.
  10. I've got some here: http://www.edgarmedia.co.uk/behind.htm +would suggest to look at set pictures in AC Magazine. Loads of useful info.
  11. Hi guys! I started experiencing some problems with search engine, after the website went through minor updates (like shifting search button from right to left, reconstructing the search flow etc). I can't seem to find many topics that did exist for sure. (For example, I'm trying to find topic about dps websites. So I type: dp website, dp websites. no topics.) found this one, but it took me quite a lot of time, to be honest. is there any way to make search engine prioritise topic titles? Is it only me, or are there more people who experience problems with search? Thanks a lot!
  12. Hi! Has anybody used 5D (Mark I) on set to check exposures/contrast? Would you say that 500 ISO corresponds to Vision 3 7219 (with all the other camera picture settings left untouched)? If not - what is wrong on the digital image? More info in shadows, clipping highlights? Really interested to hear from those who used 5D Mark I particularly. Thanks a lot! ps. Is it just me, or search engine became worst? I can't to seem find even some basic topics anymore. Getting 'error' page in most of times.
  13. Hi-hi! Would would be the best place to look for 16mm stock short ends and re-cans (in London)? Re-cans mainly, to be honest. But for some tests short ends will be ok. 7219/18 is the main interest. Would Kodak be a sensible place to call? Thanks!
  14. Watched it yesterday on a big screen. Hm... Can't say I really liked the look. It's more down to the personal taste, I guess. For me, the look was somehow distracting to the story. All the clipped highlights, slight vignetting in some shots, softness on the edges and on the bottom... Seemed too artificial. And I agree with David, the first and the last scene looked like they went through some insane post. The b/w bits looked absolutely great. Like good old 16mm b/w reversal. The one thing I loved from the colour footage were close-ups. Looked really good. The exceptional sharpness of the digital, plus absolute lack of noise created some beautiful close-ups.
  15. Portraits of Valentin Serov (1865-1911). http://vserov.ru/kartina.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentin_Serov
  16. Thanks a lot for the advice, Fran! Will shoot tests in couple weeks time, trying to find the best approach.
  17. That's what I hope for :) One question: why did you suggest rating at 800 and push process to 1000? why not rating at 1000? Thanks!
  18. Are you sure they were not talking about the interiors of a camera, about the procedure of 'checking the gate'? I have never heard that using proper canned air is bad for lenses.
  19. Shooting with Distagons, so it's 1.2 But want to give my focus puller some life - lots of handheld, so hope to shoot at around 2-2.8.
  20. And there is a small lever on the side of the film plane. It should be in up position... or down. In one of the two, basically.
  21. Wow. Thanks, Walter. That's exactly what I'm going to do tomorrow morning.
  22. Thanks, man. I am just in pre-production of a short. Thinking of using 7219, but expose for 1000 ASA (not enough light - shooting night exteriors with neons and billboards as light sources). It's straight to HD transfer, no prints. I think to rate at 1000, but not sure if it would be wise to develop as normal (and get that extra 1 stop in telecine), or push chemically and just telecine as normal.
