  1. I recognise the sony viewfinder tube but from that angle it could be anything.
  2. Although I do agree that it can be over used at times, I get the feeling you are missing the point of hand held "shakey cam" Watch the openening of saving private ryan and imagine that shot on dollys and steadcams. It is about conveying an emotion as is most cinematography, and alot of the time shakey cam is used effectivly to create a feeling of insecuity, unrest or urgency. My the world would be a boring place if we watched it all from the comfort of a tripod.
  3. I am not sure of the specific shot you are referring to but from my knowledge it could be either a swing shift lens or he could have used a split diopter, From memory Robby likes to use them a bit.
  4. where are you based? You may be able to get some extra hands on deck (for little money) if you advertise. Im sure you could find a film school guy who at the very lease will be able to help you lug gear.
  5. I have seen some impressive results from those little slider dollys that you mount onto a tripod although the store bought ones might not take a red i'm sure you could design a heavier duty version without oo much fuss. Google has lots of stuff on them but this will get you started. Maybe a cross between this. http://www.theslider.com/4foot.html And this. http://www.slicksliderdolly.com/
  6. Hey Matt, Good to see you are keen. It might be worth getting in contact with Panavision down there and asking the guys for a few local assistants/DP's email addresses, Although without discourraging you, In aus their can sometimes be alot of legal issues reguarding having an unpaid person on set (insurance). Saying that though I met a great DP up here in Sydney who was able to swing a few things in my favour when I was starting out and doing the same as you, So it can be done you just need the right person saying the right words. Good Luck. Jake
  7. Hmm Interesting view. I liked it alot. Yes, the camera shake could have been used a little less I agree and also the accents May have been a little over the top to begin with but honestly what did you expect? Lord of the rings with extra terrestrials? I thought the way they intercut documentary footage with the live action was very well done as was the Edit on the whole. It was photographed well except for a little too much shake and the performances were quite believable and of course absolutly top notch CGI. To put this on a similar level to Transformers is ludicrous. This was how transformers should have been done.
  8. No country for old men. Deakins some nice stuff as allways The girl Next door. More from a romantic perspective No Vacancy? A thriller/ Suspense Psycho? Lost in translation? Barton Fink? Copote? Your not even trying. It's ok everyone has mind blanks sometimes.
  9. Wow that is great. It reminds me of why I love the work of some of those guys. Who would have thought you could rewatch a film in 2 minutes. Great find.
  10. It is indeed true that Panavision Sydney Will be located next door to Deluxe in Lane Cove. The move will happen some time in November, no equipment "bake sale" to speak of at the moment however. 20 years of junk is in the process of being sorted through for it's potential usefullnes, It is quite intriguing some of the things that have been pulled up. One of the Ex service guys draws contained some drawings of every single cable and wire diagram in the entire fleet, a few thousand little notepad sheets all rather meticulously organised, Just another little thing that has been completely digitised in the modern age i guess. ---Supposidly there is a 3 story underground carpark at the new complex. Edit.
  11. I just watched some of your time lapse stuff. That last one in the 4 minute video going over the valley at sunset is mind blowing. I Would love to see that projected :) Great work.
  12. O god, Any chance of bringing 4k projection of the godfather to australia? I can't afford the plane ticket! Although the 6th is my birthday *wink wink*
  13. Badabing!!! the news i have been waiting for! http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/canon-e...l-for-video-re/ Well not really, It's still a stills camera but full frame sensor HD movies with control!!. Who's the cheapest full frame on the block now red? *steps off soapbox*
  14. Unfortunatly I am not able to run a laptop. The camera will be mounted to a lighting truss about 30 metres off the ground so logistically it is a pain in the ass to have a laptop up there however the budget does not cover the rental of a laptop either. One day I will get around to buying one. I like the exposure bracketing idea. I will do a test shoot tomorrow and see how it goes.
  15. I'm glad i posted here. I would not have thought of using bracketed exposure. In terms of the naming convention i'm not sure that is possible on my Camera (Canon 5dmk2). I will have to look into it a bit more.
  16. Hey. I have a rock concert shoot coming up in a few days and would like some advice on setting exposures on an unmanned camera. The concept is to have a stills camera mounted from the lighting rig shooting wides at an interval of about 14secs in order to make a time lapse of the entire performance. From what the director has told me the light show will start off rather low key for a few songs alot of backlighting through fog and they will gradually introduce OLED displays across the entire stage and build up the lighting slowly until they hit one of their signatures songs at which point the Light show basically explodes with the intent of the audience having to cover their eyes. How on earth do i achieve an accurate exposure on something that can potentially change 10 stops? I have thought of using a auto exposure on the camera but i fear the Camera will take an auto reading off a light or OLED screen and close my iris down so I have no other details or vica versa. Any suggestions?
  17. I Have the perfect solution for you. :) A friend of mine shot some videos at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney, as part of a series called the Kodak lighting for realism master class. They are a little old now and the quality is fairly poor however the wealth of information contained within them is still priceless stuff. Check them out here https://www.studentfilmmakers.com/store/cus...productid=16814 Basically it is a few of the greats demonstrating how they would light particular scenes. Allen Daviau, Robby Muller, John Seale, Dean Semler and a bunch more.
  18. Any idea what the name of the Doco was called? I'd love to see it. I have only recently seen my first Lynch film, Inland Empire. I am a bit embarrassed to admit it but it had 4 of us absolutely terrified by the end. Quite literally shrieking at the TV set. I was re-invigorated in the power of film-making after that session, I would have to say Lynch is the spicy food of film making. Jake
  19. I sent the administrator an email asking if an alternate site was being set up anytime soon (a few months back). They still seemed to be quite effected by the whole situation but didn't rule it out completely. Fingers crossed. Would be great to get a copy of those diagrams.
  20. I am going to have to disagree with people here. Coming from the southern hemisphere though I can only comment from my experiences in this industry, things in the North may be quite different. In Australia, You are kidding yourself if you expect a focus puller will hire you with no experience knowing the job is paid.Well maybe it does occur occasionally but it is certainly uncommon and mostly as a last resort. Especially considering the lack of work floating around at the moment and the amount of full time, already established loaders and 2nd's looking for work. The exception to the rule is of course Short films, shorts in Aus usually have minuscule budgets and rarely do crew get paid, ask around if there is any short films that you could jump on board. They tend to be a proving ground for new assistants, Think of it as introducing yourself to DP's and Focus pullers professionally or in some senses a job interview. If you are professional and committed to the job at hand you will get noticed. Having said this though, if you are offered work on a job that you know is paid (for the other crew) don't do the gig for free, or for lower rates. Or at least if you do, don't do it more then once or twice, you will quickly move onto your peers poop list and into the "Cheap Guy" pile, not a place anyone wants to be. But certainly never give the gear out for free, that is like asking to be exploited. Hope that helps. Jake
  21. My mistake on the 4k units I think they are actually 5k Mole pars we have, Blondes and Reds. I wasn't aware that doing a White Balance actually effected anything at all on the phantom, besides the monitor out that is. That is a good suggestion to use an 80 on the lens. In terms of flicker, We shot a few sequences at 600fps and using only 2ks and an 800w or two for kick I did not experience any lack of uniformity in the image. I will ramp it up today hopefully get around the 1000fps mark and see how we go in the flicker department, I will definitely be looking for it now. Thanks for your response. Jake Iesu
  22. Hey, I'm doing a test shoot tomorrow with the Phantom on green screen. Im wondering if anyone has any ideas on what will make the Green Pop on this camera. Being raw capture I'm not 100% on how to tackle it. I shot a few tests a week ago and the green seemed to be very muted, almost milky, it was lit with tungsten lamps and exposed at the same stop as the talent. A friend has suggested sticking a 1/2 blue on the lamps and under exposing 2 stops, however the phantom seems to handle things quite different from film, i think if i under expose it, It will be even duller?. Any suggestions. Unfortunately I am limited to using tungsten lamps 4k and under.
  23. Seems as though it has been pushed for a next year start :( Lets hope the Aussie $ doesn't strengthen in that time or dare i say it *cough* justice league.
  24. You can actually mount Primo's onto a 5dmk2. Although with the wider lenses you do get port holing. I haven't tried the 35mm but I do know the 27mm vignettes however the 50mm does not. You also have to be quite careful that the rear element does not protrude past the PV - EF mount or you will do some nasty damage to your shutter a few of the primos are not usable for this reason. Below is a picture taken with the 5d using,a 27mm Primo when i was doing some tests a few months back. It is difficult to see with such a small output but their is some pretty hefty resolution loss on the sides of the images, as you can imagine using a 35mm format lens on a vista vision equivalent format.
  25. Nice post, Very interesting, I wasn't aware of the focus problems with DSLR's Do you have a source where i can read more about science behind that? On the topic of Pola's. Is their physically a difference between a "True Pola" and a standard Pola? or is it just a marketing thing used by schenider.
