  1. Hi, Probably many DPs are using this app already but I only just got introduced to it yesterday. I thought I'd mention i for anyone who doesn't know about it. You calibrate it by keeping it on 6 sides for 5 seconds. You point it towards the sky and it visually shows you exactly where the sun is going to be at different times as you pan or tilt your iPhone looking at the sky in different places. How cool is that?!!! The person who wrote it should get a prize! Try it. It's great! http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sun-scout/id375314684?mt=8 http://splendid-things.co.uk/sunscout/ Only US$10!
  2. Hi, I've just started research to buy a Red camera and a set Zeiss lenses. I am researching if there are any used Red Epic and sets of lenses on the market or not. Does anyone know any reputable companies that sell used film/video equipment? I am based in Hong Kong so there are not that many film/video camera suppliers here. I can buy new but not necessarily used. Thanks for any advice! Morgan
  3. Thanks all! Hiya Ked!! Nice to hear from ya, it's been a while! :)
  4. Thanks! If you used off board non-compressed recording on the D800, what brand of drive would you use to record uncompressed? I don't really use DSLRs that much so I am not very familiar with the different drives you can use. Thank you!
  5. Hi, I know that this is a difficult question to ask! I am in then market for a DSLR that can make nice videos as well. These new cameras have just been released. Anyone have any ideas on which has the best stills and video images? Just interested in some thoughts, I know that there is no definitive answer!! Thanks! Morgan
  6. filmconnection.com ? Be careful though, some people think this is a scam.
  7. There's Camerimage held every year in Lodz, Poland which is a film festival dedicated to cinematography?... A lot of fun if you can go. http://www.pluscamerimage.pl/?lang=en
  8. Hi, I'm shooting a music video fro MTV next month and the director likes this video because of the blurry images in the foreground. We want to emulate this effect in some shots. I haven't tested it yet but as far as I can tell it seems these are just different pieces of broken glass put in front of the lens when they are shooting. Any ideas? Any suggestions? For the moment I am think of using different pieces of broken glass, broken coloured vases and thin solid objects etc. Thanks!
  9. Store it in a fridge for 10 months. Write a feature to be shot only outdoors. Learn how to use reflector boards and silks etc. Shoot 1:1. Sell it! Then start again.... Shorts are a waste of time if you can do a feature in my opinion! PRIMER (2004) Budget $7,000 = $7,400 today Like “El Mariachi”, this high concept no-budget sci-fi thriller is the stuff of indie dreams. Produced for an extremely low 7K on 16mm amid the digital revolution, Primer collected the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Shane Carruth had been a former engineer who quit his job to make a film - a risky venture considering he had not even made a short film before. Nonetheless, with intense research he taught himself not only how to direct, but do the cinematography, sound recording, editing, sound editing and everything else involved with the craft. Oh yeah, he was also the lead actor and composed the music. Carruth didn't leave himself any room for error either. He used a 1:1 shooting ratio, which means every foot of film shot ended up in the final cut. At one point you can even see Carruth on camera as actor calling cut in the shot. Amazing. http://www.dailyfilmdose.com/2009/02/top-ten-low-budget-films-under-500000.html Good luck!
  10. This is for two extra-curricular studies classes for college undergrads. One class will be a 'Film Appreciation' class. And the other will be an 'Introduction to basic filmmaking' class. Many of the student will be students in technical subjects like Engineering and the Sciences so I will probably use many different types of scene to give them an appreciation of how interesting and varied films can be.
  11. Which clips that he screened touched you the most? Wow, I've just realized that I have never watched Stagecoach! And I haven't watched a Buster Keaton movie in over 25 years! I'd better get to then DVD shop...
  12. Hi, I might be teaching a class in 'Visual Storytelling'. Obviously, there are hundreds of great films to screen for this subject. Personally, I would screen 'The Godfather', 'Blue' and 'Wall-E' amongst others. What would you screen? This could be an interesting thread to see if we all like the same films! Probably!
  13. Hi, I Haven't been here for a while so I thought I would post something! Here is my new reel that my girlfriend cut for me! www.morganpeline.com Thanks! Morgan
