  1. Hi, Probably many DPs are using this app already but I only just got introduced to it yesterday. I thought I'd mention i for anyone who doesn't know about it. You calibrate it by keeping it on 6 sides for 5 seconds. You point it towards the sky and it visually shows you exactly where the sun is going to be at different times as you pan or tilt your iPhone looking at the sky in different places. How cool is that?!!! The person who wrote it should get a prize! Try it. It's great! http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sun-scout/id375314684?mt=8 http://splendid-things.co.uk/sunscout/ Only US$10!
  2. Hi, I've just started research to buy a Red camera and a set Zeiss lenses. I am researching if there are any used Red Epic and sets of lenses on the market or not. Does anyone know any reputable companies that sell used film/video equipment? I am based in Hong Kong so there are not that many film/video camera suppliers here. I can buy new but not necessarily used. Thanks for any advice! Morgan
  3. Thanks all! Hiya Ked!! Nice to hear from ya, it's been a while! :)
  4. Thanks! If you used off board non-compressed recording on the D800, what brand of drive would you use to record uncompressed? I don't really use DSLRs that much so I am not very familiar with the different drives you can use. Thank you!
  5. Hi, I know that this is a difficult question to ask! I am in then market for a DSLR that can make nice videos as well. These new cameras have just been released. Anyone have any ideas on which has the best stills and video images? Just interested in some thoughts, I know that there is no definitive answer!! Thanks! Morgan
  6. filmconnection.com ? Be careful though, some people think this is a scam.
  7. There's Camerimage held every year in Lodz, Poland which is a film festival dedicated to cinematography?... A lot of fun if you can go. http://www.pluscamerimage.pl/?lang=en
  8. Hi, I'm shooting a music video fro MTV next month and the director likes this video because of the blurry images in the foreground. We want to emulate this effect in some shots. I haven't tested it yet but as far as I can tell it seems these are just different pieces of broken glass put in front of the lens when they are shooting. Any ideas? Any suggestions? For the moment I am think of using different pieces of broken glass, broken coloured vases and thin solid objects etc. Thanks!
  9. Store it in a fridge for 10 months. Write a feature to be shot only outdoors. Learn how to use reflector boards and silks etc. Shoot 1:1. Sell it! Then start again.... Shorts are a waste of time if you can do a feature in my opinion! PRIMER (2004) Budget $7,000 = $7,400 today Like “El Mariachi”, this high concept no-budget sci-fi thriller is the stuff of indie dreams. Produced for an extremely low 7K on 16mm amid the digital revolution, Primer collected the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Shane Carruth had been a former engineer who quit his job to make a film - a risky venture considering he had not even made a short film before. Nonetheless, with intense research he taught himself not only how to direct, but do the cinematography, sound recording, editing, sound editing and everything else involved with the craft. Oh yeah, he was also the lead actor and composed the music. Carruth didn't leave himself any room for error either. He used a 1:1 shooting ratio, which means every foot of film shot ended up in the final cut. At one point you can even see Carruth on camera as actor calling cut in the shot. Amazing. http://www.dailyfilmdose.com/2009/02/top-ten-low-budget-films-under-500000.html Good luck!
  10. This is for two extra-curricular studies classes for college undergrads. One class will be a 'Film Appreciation' class. And the other will be an 'Introduction to basic filmmaking' class. Many of the student will be students in technical subjects like Engineering and the Sciences so I will probably use many different types of scene to give them an appreciation of how interesting and varied films can be.
  11. Which clips that he screened touched you the most? Wow, I've just realized that I have never watched Stagecoach! And I haven't watched a Buster Keaton movie in over 25 years! I'd better get to then DVD shop...
  12. Hi, I might be teaching a class in 'Visual Storytelling'. Obviously, there are hundreds of great films to screen for this subject. Personally, I would screen 'The Godfather', 'Blue' and 'Wall-E' amongst others. What would you screen? This could be an interesting thread to see if we all like the same films! Probably!
  13. Hi, I Haven't been here for a while so I thought I would post something! Here is my new reel that my girlfriend cut for me! www.morganpeline.com Thanks! Morgan
  14. I hate to say this. I find this clip really funny!!! Sorry to like this so much! BTW There is a lot of swearing - apologies.
  15. Hi, Yet again..I should know this! But.... What lens size is considered the 'standard' lens when shooting in a 4K 2.40 aspect ratio on the Red One? e.g. its a 50mm lens for 35mm, 25mm when shooting on 16mm. What is it on Red - is it still the 50mm? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. HI, I'm a shooting a comedy thing on a 7D at the moment. We just realized that you can't keep the HDMI monitor and LCD on at the same time. In the manual it says that this is impossible. However, I understand there is a hacked firmware upgrade for this.... Doe anyone have more information on this? Thanks a lot!!!
  17. ....I didn't realize.... So a 'Standard lens' on a 7D is a 50mm (or a 40mm depending on your personal taste...) just like on 35mm. That makes things much easier! Thanks a lot!
  18. Hi, I just found it on the net. So you need to divide by 1.6 So to get a the same 50mm perspective on a D5, for a D7 you need to use a 31mm. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Field-of-View-Crop-Factor.aspx Thanks!
  19. Hi, I'm shooting a sitcom on some Canon 7Ds. I am just confirming something. A friend told me that you need to multiply by 1.6 to get lens size equivalencies e.g. If I wanted to use a standard lens - a 50mm on a D5 then to get the same perspective of a standard lens, on a D7 I would need to use an 80mm. Is this right? Thanks!
  20. Hi, I am shooting a comedy on a D5 MkII and I would like to know what ISO gives me the best 'noiselessness'. There will be night time interiors as well as daytime interiors and exteriors. 1. I have been told that 100ASA to 400ASA gives the best quality for video, and then that 400ASA to 800ASA adds a little visual noise but is hardly noticeable. Can anyone please verify this? 2. I have been told that 100ASA to 400ASA has the same visual quality. Can anyone please verify this? I don't have any ND filters so I will probably be jumping from 100 ASA for exteriors to 400ASA for interiors to maintain a constant aperture. I will be testing this camera today. But we are shooting tomorrow and literally I have just touched the camera 20 minutes ago.... Thank you for your help!
  21. Hi, I am in HK in China at the moment just looking for a 2nd hand 235 or 435 Extreme camera package for a new production company. Can anyone point me in the right direction to who sells 2nd hand camera packages? Thanks!
  22. Thanks y'all! I'll probably never ever do this the old-fashioned, though I wish I could, way but it's always good to know how it can be done!
  23. Just watched this today. It was ok whilst the popcorn lasted but then once it was over it just evaporated from my psyche. As expected...paint by numbers script, generic battle scenes and really cheap looking CGI. Quite mediocre actually in the end. No way near as bad as Transformers though! I felt like they ripped a lot of shots from Star Wars in the end. It was bearable whilst I was watching it but I only realized how truely meaningess this film is when I watched High School Musical later in the evening and realized that it was more enjoyable to watch and had more to say!...Now that is saying something! I think the term 'creatively bankrupt' comes to mind when describing GI Joe. One of the critics highlighted in Rotten Tomatoes said it best when he said something along the lines of.... one the best films of this action/adventure genre was made a few years ago and it will never be surpassed. And they destroyed the Eiffel Tower as well. I think he's right! He was talking about Team America. Ha ha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE-5v1C--kk America F*** Yeah! Ha Ha! Now that is what I call genius!
