  3. I take no issue with those asking for free work. Some of my favorite jobs I was unfortunately working for free. (they were exceptions though) I have owned and operated a number of businesses and one counter intuitive fact I have learned is people don't really work hardest for money. When it comes down to it there are more powerful motivators. Low budget indies and pizza/junk food are synonymous, I really appreciate good food, but got to choose ones battles. If I am working low budget I usually come with a brown bag lunch like a badass, and focus on the work. This all said In my experience if you cant raise a few thousand dollars (as a producer/director) for an art film/short film/experimental film/etc than you probably cant make a movie.. Lots of content these days, not a ton of quality, certainly not more than yesteryear. Making a film is difficult. Working any job and saving a few grand to pay a crew is easy. SO... I dont work for free, not because of the money or food.. Because 9 out of 10 it will be uncommitted people doing marginal uninspiring derivative junk and will urk you every time you see the imdb reminder. However if I choose to show up for free I will work my butt off without complaints! So JD I feel your pain, but don't let it get to you!

  14. I second everything said above. Just want to add, It’s also fine to put a lens on a camera and think 'yes'.. That’s looks right, or 'no' let’s try something else. Though, sometimes you need a wide lens because of a tight space, or a long lens because you’re across the street or something. So circumstance dictates. It’s of course some combination of instinctual and technical. It’s also a question that could warrant an essay. I remember reading somewhere about a director (Kurosawa) using very long lenses in a situation. He said that he thought the cameras scare the actors so putting them far away is better. Robert Rodrigues used a wide lens on his first film because it is less shaky, more DOF and just easy to use run and gun. Sometimes these practical decisions are interpreted into artistic style by the audience later.
  15. On the really low budget I have had great results with the Zeiss Jena for Pentacon 6x6. Especially in the longer lengths 80mmf2.8 120mm2.8, 180mm2.8, 300f4 are fantastic. Lowish contrast, organic, flatter in color, gorgeous flares. The flares arent sharp or sci-fi ish like say panavision, they instead just kind of soften the blacks and add an overall tone. I like the sonnars the best. Biometars are good to(and super cheap). They have very round apertures and robust housings. Can use them with PL mount or any other mount. Go for the older single coated variety. I read somewhere some of this east german glass was rehoused and used for shots in "The Master". With more budget my personal favorite are cooke vintage s2/s3..
  16. To my understanding the CP have tighter quality control and have more consistancy in the assembly line compared with the ZE. So there can be more variation with ZE where as the CP, Zeiss checks each lens for accuracy. I dont know this first hand however I have seen ZE lenses with remarkable sharpness on the bench and some with less so.
  17. I would be interested in your results.
  18. I cant speak for a direct comparison, but I have done some work with the DP's and find them to be fantastic.
  19. Dragon camera for rent in San Francisco Bay Area! I am a private owner and can provide exellent rates.
