  1. I noticed the digital look though it didn't seem to be any type of mistake. It only really happened in the '70's section of the film. It looked like it was an attempt to emulate the look of the video of that time. I thought it was a great way to make the footage feel like it was shot in the 1970's and also blend in the TV news footage sections. In the same way people emulate technicolor processes to invoke older periods i thought the video look did a great job making the film feel like it was 40 years ago.
  2. I would look at the desired effect you like in movies and just go to look up the American Cinematographer article. Different colors mean different things to different people, so there's no true rules on what colors produce what emotional effect. Reading what cinematographer's intention when filming has helped me in developing my own desired looks regarding color. Also spend some time watching light and thinking about how it makes you feel. There are times when I am in good light, I'll pull out my swatch book to find what colors i would use to recreate it.
  3. Thanks Andrew, I love Cinefex. Whenever I have a howdidtheydothat kind of moment i get that. I just waited too long to have that moment in this case...
  4. My first advice is breathe. It sounds like the pressure got to you first thing. If you know it, you know it. Also keep shooting. You know it in theory, now it's time to know it in practice. Everyone screws up everything at least once, it's not the end of the world. Good Luck.
  5. Letus is setting themselves up as the quality consumer anamorphic source. Though lately it seems Oprah is in charge. Anamorphic for your iPhone, Anamorphic for your GoPro, Anamorphic for your SLR!!! And I am NOT complaining.
  6. If you look at the market, $2k for a 4k resolvable anamorpic adapter is affordable. Since you'd pay $1k for a soft anamorphic adapter that's standard def...
  7. Pat, you'd have to replace the eyepiece with a camera mount and go about it that way.
  8. Tim, 4ft tank square..... holy poop. I think my eyes fell out and rolled off someplace. Thanks guys, there was alot of great information here. "Shanksfx" on youtube did a nice little demo of what you can do on a sheet of glass with dye, it was really impressive and I was wondering what I could throw a little of this stuff in my reel. Though I think that a 4'x4'x3' tank is a little more than I can chew at this point.
  9. I keep hearing about how all of the "Birth of the Universe" sequence was all done in camera. I'm curious how one would achieve the shot that is a crane up thru the cosmic dust of the arm a spiral galaxy. I have been thinking that it would be created in a cloud tank or something. I have yet to do any experimenting on my own i am curious where to start on this. Thanks for any help.
  10. While the XL2 is easier to work with to do a job, is it the best way to learn cinematography? To me learning cinematography is the "I want an ASC after my name" not a future in shooting weddings. I feel that the "easier" camera isn't the point in learning a craft. While the arguement for XLR audio is a good one, that is usually covered by sound. So I guess what I am also asking is what is it that makes the XL2 or DVX100 better to learn cinematography than an SLR?
  11. I couldn't disagree more. What can you learn on an old video camera besides how to work on an old video camera? With a cheap SLR you are setting yourself up with a knowledge of 35mm focal lengths and working in a (nearly) super35 frame. I can't fathom the benefit to a DVX100 for image making over a T2i or similar. While this may be coming off as a hostile response, it isn't... I'm just curious what benefit a miniDV cam will actually bring and how you arrived at that?
  12. Oblivion is the other movie you guys are thinking about. I found the writing to be tight. Basic, but tight.
  13. If this all tungsten light I would WB for that. Then your interior light will be white and if you want a warm light to come in you can gel it to warm it up and see what simulates sunset lighting to your taste. YOu can also put the light a little lower depending on what floor your story takes place on. If you need longer shadows pull the light back. Good luck.
  14. Adrian, Thanks for the feed back, the song was something a friend scored a while back for a short I did called Human Resources, back when I was a "director". None of your feedback hurt my feelings in anyway, i really appreciate your forwardness about everything in there. I'm dying to shoot more and bring more to it, especially movement. Thank you greatly for your feedback and real reaction. I've needed to get off my ass and shoot "reel shots" for a while now, and you've pretty much affirmed that.
  15. Everyone loves it and I shouldn't change a thing? I doubt that. Please help me improve this reel.
  16. I am looking for feedback on my first reel. It's assembled from 2 shorts that I shot as a DP, and a good sexy shot in the open. Thanks! http://youtu.be/dlkYqXvsx9s
  17. Mr. Holland, I liked the film and the 3D conversion was pretty okay. I actually went back to see it in 3D on a recommendation as I don't like post conversions. As far as K.H. Martin and Pat Murray, Perhaps you guys need to actually see Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams has done a great job taking what made the original series transcendent and made it entertaining for everyone. There is a solid allegory to how we can improve as a people, there are great character moments in this series. It both pays lip service to the original and then does it's own thing. While I appreciate your love for the distance of the moon from earth, it plays no part in the narrative and is splitting hairs. I'm sure you screamed in theaters when the Kessel Run was won by Parsecs. While you two may not like what I am saying or even feel that I am picking on you, I am not. I just think screaming fanboyism belongs on a Star Trek message board. I'm also not saying that people shouldn't be negative about bad screenwriting or filmmaking. We all saw Prometheus and Terminator 3, and we all know about characters being poorly written, or movies that bore you with action. What I'm saying is stop hating for hating's sake. Take off the rose colored glasses and watch some original Trek and see these movies again, you'll see how well it represents the 60's Trek really well and updates it for today.
  18. When did everyone get too snobbish to enjoy a good popcorn flick? There's a whole lot of shitting on this movie for no reason. It was a perfectly enjoyable film. I wonder how many of you guys would have, if transported to 1984, bemoan the story of Terminator or a similar film in your crumdgenly state.
  19. Rich, You should give it a go. It's visuals are expremely painterly in color and compostion.
  20. Has anyone been watching this show? I've been so impressed I'm becoming annoying to watch it with. Everything is so painterly and beautiful (sometimes creepily so). I've never been so awestruck watching a network TV show. What do you guys think about it?
  21. Hey guys, I feel kinda guilty posting about this but I'm curious, does anyone know if there is a VSCO cam style preset or LUTs for Apple Color? I want a good starting point without having to break down how VSCO modifies color to creat a more film like look. But I might have to sacrifice an afternoon (or few days) experimenting to create this look for HDSLR footage so it doesn't look so lifeless. I saw FilmConvert but it looks like it's better suited to actual RAW footage and not just CineStyle. Thanks guys. Darrell
  22. Have you tried using a small makeup mirror and the sun?
  23. I haven't used either but (according to NoFilmSchool) FilmConvert adjusts the LUT of a raw file to match specific stocks in color rendition as well as adding grain in specific areas, such as highlights and shadows as opposed to a uniform grain added to the whole image. The only thing that you find a detraction is that the grain is simulated on the image of FilmConvert as opposed to Cine Grain which is a recording of actual grain which you can overlay on your image. I don't think either is better than the other, as it depends on which is offering the look you are looking for. Also This a real name forum , so please change your name to your actual name as per forum rules. Good luck with your project and report back because I am interested in hearing about how well these products work.
