  8. Shooting in Houston around the 7th & 8th. In the need of a camera cart. If any you have or know somewhere we could rent a magliner, backstage, or yager type cart please let me know! Stevetw103@gnail.com
  9. Personally the fold up ones just suck completely. They never end up fitting anywhere. But hey they don't cost a lot and it's good to have different sets of stuff so just buy both :-)
  10. AC magazine focuses more with the DP side of things in terms of only interviewing the DP and/or director. its really a great magazine. ICG however is more focused on the camera side of things. ICG is actually a great read. It's union funded so if you're are a camera geek then you'll like this one. talks more about working with union member and supporting everyone in the work place. They take time to interview not only the DP but in many cases the operators and the ACs. they also have a good gear review section. plus its a much higher quality print and they also take time to do spots on young up and coming cinematographers. I get both and i love both. But i'm in 600.... so i pay a LOT more for my subscription :-P
  11. Ok never mind guys!! Looks like this job isn't happening after all
  12. I may be traveling from Los Angeles to cape town south Africa for a spot on Monday 3/4/13 and may be looking for a 2nd AC for myself. Details are still coming in but as of now it sounds like we'll be shooting 35mm out of panavision. Does anyone know of any good ACs in that area? Don't know if I'll be able to hire a loader too so I'll most likely be looking for a clapper/loader. Also, an AC with a cart would be very helpfull. If not, is there a way I can rent a camera cart out there? Thanks for the help Stephen Taylor-wehr
  13. Agreed. Pay the money for the mod 51 bag. It look more professional and will seriously last you a lifetime. Hell yeah Matt's. I just bought your bag ;-)
  14. as a 1st i've been shrinking down what i bring to set. basically i'll get some type of husky/ doctor bag that can hold my front box with all my tools in it. I'll let my 2nd deal with all the other bags. When i'm 2nding however i have either a cinebag or mod 51 bag on the cart and lately have switched to a gals police bag or a 511 tactical bag for my run bag. they're great.
  15. surveilence head set, pen+paper, coffee machine (french press or espresso)
  16. yeah, just go shoot stuff to put it simply :-)
  17. yeah, shower curtains during prep or large clear trash bags with clips and rubber bands. done and done
  18. yes, no red rock. 12" is pretty standard. i've been rocking out with the 3" lately and love it! it's perfect but it's more of a luxury item. buy the 12"
  19. what david said.. and dont be afraid of keeping his book, the ASC manual and tools like P-cam close by. There's nothing wrong with not knowing something, the key is to know how to look it up and/or figure it out.... as long as it's done right.
  20. Dear Danny Brown, dont be stupid. call me and just borrow mine!
  21. 1 - see i actually put IRNDs or hot mirrors as the outer most filter. Yes, filters should be as close as they can to the lens but when using IRs the are the furthest from then lens. IR filters are placed with the writing facing away from the camera. When stacking NDs i always try to get a set of IRNDs and regular NDs. I try to only IR the lens only once. IRND's past 1.5 are just a nightmare for color and even the 1.5s are iffy. 2 - mirror shots are as hard as you make them. you always measure to the mirror first and then to the subject. this can be done with the soft tape that way, hard to to the mirror and then from the mirror to the subject sepperately, or i like to use my laser tape. it bounces of the mirror perfectly :-) 3 - tail slating. upside down and clap first, then flip. this goes back to film so that you can get the clap in before the film runs out. if using film and you know youre going to need to do a tail slate then bump an insert slate before rolling the scene if possible 4 - cinetape. use your 2nd to help you aim it. it does change each shot but youll have to adjust it. and yeah dont soley go by it. it's great for close-ups 5 - anamorphics. shallow depth of fields. just be as precise as possible. 6 - pens.... meh, i've pretty much given up on them. i hardly use the disks ever. i only go by the lens markings. if need be use china marker or i like to use little bright colored paper tape triangles when on a big zoom. if i do mark disks, it's usually a last minute thing and just use whatever is in my pocket, usually a sharpie and worry about cleaning it off later
  22. As a focus puller I try to go by the marks as much as possible. more precise yields better results. wide shots are of course much easier but it all depends on how close youre your subject matter is. Depending on the lens if your subject is closer than 20 feet hyperfocal will do more harm than good. With wide lenses i tend not to worry too much about things past 50 feet. that will give you a better idea of where to place your focus. I use P-cam a lot. when in doubt always check but you eventually know what it's going to say
  23. Yes, as an assistant buying a P-touch label maker that can handle the 1" cartridges is a great and proffessional tool to have in your kit. Esspecially for a feature you should always use the P-touch to print out labels for the slate and filter tags, etc. P-touch cartridges are pricey but that should be included in your expendables list that production pays for. This whole issue is also more your 2nd AC's concern. As a first, you should never have to deal with slates.
