  1. next time if you ask how to achieve this look the answer will be the same go and study, study not a lighting workshop, start from the manual, no need to spend money and time just a little download man..... stop asking something do for you.........study and do it http://www.arri.com/lighting/skypanel/products/s30_c/ download section user manual in english Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy Loud studio Trastevere Roma www.loudphoto.it
  2. Maybe this time you need to study something like the skypanel manual... Will you been paid for that? Go chek gels it's funny i swear.
  3. Dear Francesco beautiful set up, can i ask a question? No gaffer at all? because this kind of things are the life of a gaffer like me...... so next time hire meeeeeeee. D25 it's the 2.5k version of the hmi fresnel line, the evolution of the 2.5 compact hmi i'm not so sure about the amount of light pushed it's more than an M18 because the d25 use a fresnel lens and the reflector of the m18 (wich is a par no lensen) it's a miracle in output, forget about vista beam not even comparable with an arrisun 4k (super sure about that despite what kino says) also i think it's useless to comparate full spot photometrics because of the differences of the fixtures andbecause i'ts very rare to use full spot an hmi. If you want to talk about this or other set up i would love it because it's my work of every day. In our language it's also more easy Grazie a presto e buona pasqua Happy easter guys
  4. i think it's a 12v powered, to work with line power you need a variable power supply, cut away the xlr,you can D-TAP to a vmount battery or use a battery, duracell made this MN21 12v micro battery, if you use a variable power supply from 6 to 18v you can also dimm it down.
  5. In Italy grid cloth it's grid cloth we usually use othEr language therms Not like French. The hylarious Thing it's how People over 40 years or non English spoken called It LiKe glic cloc or Greed clok or cli clo' I Can write a Book with example of equipment lists with The Most Strange terminology, i've seen also from important Dp Things like keno flu or clic click or Ding ding (for inkie dinky) or skeit welch for skate wheels. 7. mh....you can't live without dim? and this is a problem........there are a lot of good old ways to take down a lamp... i think that more power and less wattage could be the future.....with the camera stepping to 800 iso. I don't know the quality of the plasma light because in my county no trace at all but i think could be the future.... leonardo brocato gaffer rome italy www.loudphoto.it

  9. i said in my experience... it's not the brand or the tipe....it's a matter of technology in my tipe of work a spacelight of 40 cm it's useless, i have 3 CFL of Kino flo, i said Kino flo not Dynasun and those 3 cfl i can't use for video because are not flicker free due to cfl tech, and the CRI it's not so high for a kinoflo product. On the website it's written 500w equivalent.... and this is not the same, also use the number 575w to misunderstood the power of an hmi it's terrific... It depends on what you need to do with these. Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Roma Italy www.loudphoto.it
  10. Absolutely can't be..... in my experience.. if you think it's cheap buy it for the white skiirt and then recable with something really lighting.... depends on what you need it for....the classic spacelight (in italy called skypans) can be also with 4x625 w quartz bulb... 12. Use a source 4 with a spot lens 19° or similar better with the iris, then cut all around the walls, maybe if you can't afford the rent can use a 650 fresnel with a metal cone that cut the beam with some little flags for the wall. Or put a par 64 vnsp with a sheet of black foil and hole in the centre.... different solutions for different pockets. But it's a matter of distance of the walls and exposition. 13. It's not my country we work in 220/240 and for long distances and big loads we start with 380v but.... the 18ks are something around 100amps depending like Guy ask from different variables like distances of cable, line loss and types of ballast and the 50softsun cuold be around 250amps. Thinking on 3 18k and a 50softsun i think you are on a big job with a budget and the 18ks are arrimax or daylight but with beautiful new elettronic ballasts so if i'm right with 1400amps genny you will be fine. Distribute the load between legs it's another matter, if the genny has a cam lock out go with that, starting with 240 for the soft sun. In italy we start from 380v so three legs of 220/240 each, so i need to know how your gennys work with 240 one leg or 3 legs? if it's only one put your distro behind the 50k, put stingers for 18ks that also works on 220/240 it's the same and then split another outlet with a box balancing the 110v loads. If you don't need all this only for paper 1400 could be enough. if you have 3 legs of 240v from the genny it's easier: 50k for one 18+18k for another and 18k and minor loads in the third (always balanced between 2 legs of 110v) i hope helps despite my english good luck Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy
  14. Hi Matteo using diffused balls can be easier than butterfly in terms of time, in terms of taste it's personal, you will need to flag the balls a lot. If you are in florence i think you can try to use ALF ballons (i think you know it, a florence company that make different tipes of ballons) but the problem is that are very expensive also in therms of people managing it. With 2 plus 2 of crew (now in italy it's sad but normal) you need to be very smart, in particular try to have kinoflathead instead of wall o lite that is very heavy and sometimes very green, or maybe an m18 instead of 2.5 (more power less space and weight) the m18 on long distance for a far background it's incredible also don't forget to load some booms like manfrotto superboom (the black one) with the balls are great to go overhead booming from camera side, or some polecat to build a "bridge" with two stands out of the frame.i will take also an only 4x4 (mt) frame just in case of a bouncing or diffusing for a side fill light and maybe something open like an hmi open face (De sisti Goya) for strong backgrounds What type of generator you will have? very important. please don't blue the moon (i don't think you will do that but i hate this trick) :D :D Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy e se volessi fare due chiacchere dal punto di vista tecnico materiale/benefici scrivimi pure una mail privata che in italiano mi spiego decisamente meglio e buona fortuna!!!
  15. Clean up the gel cart (in my case is actually a gel big wood box with wheels) it's for my guys the borest day of the set, when electrician sleep in the corner or near a c-stand, if in Studio near the dmx consolle solidflagged from production eyes, so if you want to do something and not sleep clean up the gel box. Rolled in pieces with dividers in the long side 1/8 1/4 1/2 Full (for CTO CTB CTS Whitediff PlusG MinusG) one for ND's rolled with different color tapes 3/6/9/12 one for different softers like lee opal or hampshire frost and 2 for colors mixed, in the short side part with pieces of black foil in sheets and in the other side a part full of a ton of clothespins in the central section a pair of medium flags. There is always a cart with rolls just in case or maybe in the truck. My guys sometimes can chill a little bit with gels but they are always running like crazyyyy Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy
  16. Yes the 5/8 mount is missing you can use a clamp or better buy a spigot with screw, a long screw one or drill more the hole. The lamp seems an old type of fluorescence, i think don't have the edison screw socket but a sort of baionet of two little or four iron pin, so i think you maybe need to replace it with the same model that fit in the case. The cable it's easy to find it's like the pc ones but take a look inside to see if it's a sort of integrated ballst or if it's direct to line. If it's direct to line you can try to change the lamp holder with a edison screw holder maybe and use a CFL better if kinoflo one becoming a sort of CFL open face. You can play a lot with it modifing little cheap things. Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy
  17. Try to have on the scene a big cell phone even bigger than the iphone, like A Samsung S3 o S4 with a big screen and tape it a Rosco litepad, the smallest fit in the screen and the Litepad HO i'ts also dimmable and very small, take a look, i have one for this using the only question i'ts the cable for the battery pack but maybe you could try to have an adaptor and plug it via Usb on the phone. They work on 12v but if you give it 6v or 4v from the phone it works with less power. But also there is a very cheap nonpro solution made by Ikea with round led for houses...... i'm know using those like litepads doing the pc monitor changing color in rgb, i'ts very cheap and ugly but maybe could work better for your problem. I understand that rent a litepad kit for one shot will be crazy so you can try this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80192378/ Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Roma Italy
  18. If you are a 220v big size generators uses 3phase sistem (380v) and, for the Arrimax you absolutely need a generator truck because you need at least 50kw to power it, and in italy the 18/12 has a plug of 125amps. This means big boxes and big stingers, so you definetly need an electrician. Here you can request in the street a special line of power attached by the electric distributor of the city, you need a month before to do the request and it's a little bit cheaper than a generator, and the sound man will be very very happy. Just try the elctrical distributor maybe can provide a special power line in a no long distance from set, in every corner of every street there are electrical boxes but i don't know if in your country there is this service. Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy
  19. To manage electrical distribution on set all over the world you need experienced people because it's really dangeruous, if you are in Usa in 110 v the three phase sistem it's a little bit different from mine and search for the Guy Holt's posts will be very helpful. On set you must know the power you need and also the way you distribute, with luchbox or switches or simply in the size of the stingers or protections, it's like a puzzle but you need to know exactly all the size of every piece before. It's sure that for a 4k hmi you need to have a generator at least 6/7Kw in europe generator manifaturers sell 2.5-5-10 kw monophase (the 5k doesn't strike the 4k) and for the threephase 6-12-15-30 until 1000kw. In Italy for example we use the monophase sistem only for small loads until 10k, and the 10kw can power also a 6kw hmi or two 4kw hmi and a tungsten load until 9kw, but the most used it's the 5kw better if i'ts an Honda 5500 but not for 4k hmi. The three phase sistem in italy it's like that: one stinger five wires: R (power line) S (power line) T (power line) N (neutral) Ground (protection) 380v three phase sistem between RS ST RT you have 380v with very few power loss on long distances. Then there is a big box that split the power from 380v to 220v (european final voltage) picking R+N T+N S+N you have 3 phases or legs of 220v and you need also to balance them. Big generators uses 380v and also dimmer racks uses three phase like 12x2.5kw 6x5kw or 3x10kw or 3x5kw In italy we have 16amp in houses with 3kw of power and on set we use plugs like 16amps (3.5kw) 32amps (5-6kw) 63amps (10-12kw) 125amps (20-25kw) and for three phase it's 16amp (6kw 3x2kw) 32amps (15kw 3x5kw) 63amps (30kw 3x10kw) 125amps (3x20kw) after that we use a sistem simil to the cam lock with single wires called power lock from 250amps to 800amps with different size. But you are not in 220v so it's for speaking :D Leonardo Brocato still connecting boxes and stingers of every size with passion and alot of fun Gaffer Roma Italy
  20. I think the only light it's outside the window on the right or an ipotetic one it'a cleary not from above, you can see the dark on the left shoulder of the other police officer. Maybe can be a white fill on the left but maybe not depends on the contrast you want. Outside i think it's a big light can also be softed in different ways each person but the difference i think it's only made by distance from the light. Using s big light out of the window allows you to control and soft a part of it leaving more output where you want, by putting different tipe of WD or grid cloth or silk or even black solid to create dark zones with soft edges..... i think Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy
  21. The best we got here is Guy Holt, owner and modifier of several of these generators. But the Guy sistem it's great for 110v and you like me in italy use 220v so it's a little be different. I know very well the honda 6.5 and i've pushed it since 5.2kw both hmi and tungsten. You have to test with 2x2.5 hmi, it's not obvious, because are 2 big loads. Let one go completely up and then strike the other, try to run the couple at least for a quarter of hour, here in italy 2.5k hmi also the filmgear uses 32amp socket not the 16amp due to double uses also in 4k but in 220v are 10 amp. Don't go too far because 16amp are small wires and you lost power in distance. If the ballasts are filmgear have power factor corrected, if you use power gems or similar i'm not sure are pfc corrected. I think for your generator will be better if you can afford to rent instead 2 filmgear 2.5 two new Arri M18 hmi that use less power and give you the same if not more than two 2.5 filmgear....very sure about that if the generator can't run two 2.5k you can try to use one 2.5k and a 1.2k or again two 1.8k this Honda exist also in 10k model wich can run also a 4k or three 2.5k. Test one time the load to be sure or pick up a backup lamp maybe 1.2k because if you are shooting and because of load you lost a 2.5k it's half of your light and could be an exit strategy run the 1.2k. Don't make the mistake of rent the old honda ex5500 the silver one because i'm absolutely sure you can't run more than 3k, in rental house in italy always they try to give us the old silver ones instead of the red 6.5i that is very good. 22. If you want a very very harsh light you could open the lens but...... a fresnel hmi uses the lens to stop uv so you can't open it it's not safe and also all hmi have a microswitch in the closing of the lens so with the lens open the circuit it's not close so no strike. For Pars like arri sun the uv block it's a clear lens also for safety and if you remove it's not safe for eyes and without lens the beam it's ridicoulous and useless. If you need more power in bouncing use par not the fresnel (much more output) or maybe an open face. Arri makes the X series that is an open face lensess like a redhead with an hmi. I use to open the lens of the fresnels tungstens to have a very harsh shadow in some situations. Sounds strange but for bouncing the best it's an hmi open face like arri X. 23. ops i forgot for the bulbs over 60w you need an edison ceramic screw E27 socket easy to find it's the normal tipe of edison house lamp but it's made in ceramic to resist heat :) Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy
  24. No no Photoflood are for sure dimmable like all tungsten bulbs, CFL ar not dimmable and the ikea paper lantern with 500w i've used many times, maybe after some days you need to replace the paper lantern but it's simple and cheap because after some days the heat crack the paper like a toast. if you worry about the red going up with the dim down choose to start with lower wattage like 250w so you need to dim down less. if the ceiling is not so high the only choice for space is kino flo overhead (even with autopole) but it's also the ugliest in my opinion. The dolly it's not mine now it's rented but i can arrange a pic soon. The trick it's that it's so simple to build it's better to made by yourself and very cheaper, the biggest problem are tracks. i can send you after if i find my drawings (simple not industrial) The one you suggest has very good price but not seems so hard duty and versatile but must be tested. Next time in Rome call me i take you in Sistin Chapel and also rental houses that do good handmade :) Leonardo Brocato Gaffer Rome Italy
