Cinetape is one of those tools that is very helpful for focus pullers, but it's very expensive. Would anyone be interested in an affordable Cinetape solution? I'm curious to know because I'm developing one that measures FT-in or M-cm, will be using a 5v rechargeable battery, LCD Display, and mounting options. Future upgrades would integrate with your phone via App, Bluetooth, and VR headset. The idea is to also make it as accurate as possible, we all know ultrasonic sensors have their issues but for those who use Cinetape and know of its value I'm curious to know if you'd be interested in a more affordable option that doesn't compromise quality and accuracy? Sam, I think you should consider the shadows. From the image above it's all about controlling the light to create these shafts and pools of light. Definitely, if you want the look of the commercial you'll add lot's of smoke as in the Reebok spot they used plenty in the Crossfit gym. If you can't hang lights from the ceiling then off c-stands or using your barn door opening side light, but again that barn door may let in too much-uncontrolled light, as long as you can control it then go for it. But containing the smoke will be hard with an open barn door. I think your location and positioning will really help you or make things hard, depending on your space which we don't have reference to. You have plenty of lights and gear to pull this off in my opinion. It's hard to give you more than this with the information you've given but then again that's your job! :) Have fun!! Cheer, -Davi

So it's been a long time coming for me. I finally got my reel edited. I'd love to hear some feed back. I'll be adding a few more things i shot that are still in post production but I want to keep its length at 3:30ish... Let me know what you think, I really appreciate it.

I really love this combination. Sigma Art 18-35, speedbooster T EF to MFT and BMCC 2.5k Raw. It's really quite a strong combo. So versatile in a huge range of lighting conditions, extremely sharp, but with a quality in the BMCC that is very filmic. Really loving the look. Of course the exposure control on the sigma is not external so it's tricky but since the Speedbooster T allows me to control the aperture from the adaptor.

Thanks Satsuki, I agree, I know it's mostly due to the fact that there was no Pre-Production at all. We began shooting Dec 29 and finished the movie Feb 13th early morning! For a Valentine's day release. No Location Scouting, Art Director, or texture. True I could have done a little better on the bland white wall... I hung up that picture just to add something to the wall, there was nothing there originally when we first shot the scene. Everything was done in lighting speed with no pre-plan. I walked into a scene and 40 mins later we were shooting. Ultimately, it was a learning experience for all involved. I know better than to shoot in those conditions but I also need to meet more people and keep making more Narratives. Obviously I want to grow and improve in the right way, by being Professional. We will make more and they will be better planned with pre-production (location scouting, lighting schematics, script breakdown, blocking!) I know that the most important thing about telling a story is keeping things simple in lighting, blocking, dialogue, visuals, etc. But that can only come after lot's of planning and testing. Just wanted to share a short film I was the Cinematographer on. The whole project was completed from start to finish in one month and a half, given our time frame I'm happy with the short film. I've been privilege to meet some great people, the whole thing was based here in Seattle. Camera: BMCC 2.5k RAW Lens: Rokinon 17mm 2T and the Sigma 18-35mm Art 1.8 Edited: Final Cut X Colored: DaVinci Resolve 12 Although it's in another language and sometimes hard to understand; it was a crazy fast experience, I'm very glad to have worked on it. I've worked on lot's of Bollywood Productions in LA and Las Vegas back in the day as a PA. Particularly "My name is Khan" It's funny after all those years I'm now involved in an indie Bollywood Production. I hope you enjoy it... Please, I'd love to get some feed back on the Cinematography of the short. I wan't to improve and get better. I'd like to know any constructive feed back on things. The last night scenes of the movie were shot on available light, no bounce or anything... It was also our first days of the shoot and we were still not up to speed on things. I think some of those suffered the most. **there are some shots one or two that were shot on the BMPCC with a very bad soft lens and they unfortunately made it in the film, also some weird artifacts from shooting in the night in really low light at the very end of the movie.** smile emoticon

Satsuki, Thank you for the well composed reply. I'm grateful for your critique and well thought suggestions. You're right about me needing to be more careful with the product since it was white, a little blown at the end I think.. Also I agree with the time of day choice could have been much better. Shooting when the sun was more visible in the frame would have really changed the feeling for better. And of course shaped the whole scene with more shadows. I'm glad you liked the flash of light on the first scene that was intentional. (I should of kept that mindset) The cup of coffee needed more steam!!! A short documentary I shot exploring a little bit of the world through the eyes of the homeless. Please I'd like your thoughts on it. It's super short and I'd love to make it longer. Sadly It was a one man crew and I tried my best! I wish so much I could have had someone dedicated to the audio on set but it was just me and it was in a real world environment so I either get the interview or I don't... I feel that my audio is the weakest part of this mini doc and ironically the most important. Hey Matthew, Long time.. :) Hey I think it looks great. (I'm on an HD display 1080) Two things came to mind, one is the film graphics behind your "buttons" I personally don't like those I feel the are kind of corny, but that's just my opinion. I think it would look nice to have something else or maybe just play with the graphic design of it and see if you can make it better idk.. Second I think it would be cool to have a background picture in the middle of your main graphics that is very faded and bleeds into black on the edges. Possibly a landscape shot of the film or something incorporates your two main graphics (the cross, and rings) Anyways I don't know if this helps at all, but those were my initial thoughts when I first looked at the site. Okay, sorry here is how I shot this... Since that's kind of a general question I'll say anything and everything that comes to mind on the subject. I shot this with my BMCC 2.5k in RAW mode. Typically alone on set I had to use the help of whomever was there to help with a bounce or negative fill. I lit mostly by natural light and a set of 300w(x1) soft frost - 150w(x1) clear. I had also one dimmer. I used a SpeedBooster Leica to MFT with one 35-70mm zoom "Leica" lens. Also used a 28mm Zeiss, 50mm M42 (don't recall the brand), and a 35mm super Takumar m42. ahhh what else, we shot mostly during cloudy days, just the way it worked out, we did not plan that. Recorded audio with a NTG2-RODE mic. I also use a Genuses Matte box with an ND.6. I don't have an external battery solution yet so I was very conscious about battery life and kept it plugged in when possible. I ran the RAW through Davinci to CC and then brought it back for color grading. I hope this answered most of your question. Thank you Matthew for your interest. Best, Davi

All I meant was that technically I didn't "color grade" I color corrected the footage and added a little contrast that's all. I really happy you liked it a lot. This was all possible through a awesome lut I find online.

I did the grade, I'm glad you liked it. I also edited it, my greatest wish was to have had separate individuals for those key areas but I couldn't and was forced to do them myself. My goal was to just take the RAW from DaVinci and bring it back to real life. I really never "Color Graded" cause everything I tried I ultimately didn't like, I just tried to bring up the colors to life like color correction and such. The cemetery scene was day 4 night so I didn't play with that one quite a bit to get it to look semi nightish..

Hello, I'm posting a new video I shot for some friends. They are getting married and I suggested something different.. Everything was shot with the BMCC using an OLD Tokina 35mm 2.8 lens. It's the only lens I own at the moment :P Nothing was lit except for the interior christmas light scenes, only lit by the practical lights themselves. Sadly, I'm not a color grade artist so please be kind with the grade.. I wish it was better too :) I've been playing around shooting different test footages with the camera to try to get a better idea of how to expose properly in different lighting situations. Shooting RAW is great, huge files but worth their size in post. (That can be debatable) Again like the other one, http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=60653 I don't have a rig for this camera either sooo sadly some stuff is pretty shaky and given the crop factor my 35mm turned into some 60mm or something around that making every little movement very noticeable.
