Great points, thanks Satsuki. Learning people's name is hard because I mostly direct commercials and I only work with everyone a day or two, but I know the main players. I really hope people believe my thanks. I think I'm okay at all the rest except being stressed and staying positive. I tend to get angry when I'm stressed, but I mostly project it on the producers, not the crew...

With or without naming names, can you describe some of the best traits of a director you really liked working with? I guess on the flip side, some of the worst (without naming names :) Thanks!

I asked a producer I work with and she usually sets aside about a thousand for boards on a 30 second commercial. If you're talking about concept art, I'm guessing that can be much more elaborate than simple story boards and would likely cost more. Of course all of this is often negotiated according to the budget.

Yeah, life's not fair. You want to be a singer but you can't hear pitch? Sorry. You want to be a professional basketball player, but you're 5'2"? Sorry. I'm pitched against directors far more talented than me every day and it sucks and I usually lose to them and I wish I was as talented as my passion level, but I'm not. Art is not fair.

What Adam said. Every client is different. I remember an agency guy telling me his usual dealings with clients are he pitches an idea and they buy it then tell him to take out everything that made it good. I had a job a little while ago where we found out a key point in the concept didn't clear with legal two days before we were scheduled to shoot, so they took that thing out and suddenly the whole commercial made no sense. It wasn't my fault, but I haven't been hired to direct anything with that agency since.

Little update... After we screened at TIFF kids we had a handful of festivals ask for the movie, but one of the more interesting was the Museum of Modern Art in New York. They asked to purchase a copy (think we can just give it to them :)) to screen in their Family Films program which was created to help introduce children to the "richly varied world of film." So does this mean I can call myself the big "A" word? Just kidding. I would never be that pretentious ;)

He sat with me a few weeks ago for four or five hours at a restaurant and explained to me point by point how he achieved all that he has. It was one of the most unique conversations I've ever had with another filmmaker. But, four or five hours of conversation didn't even cover all of it.

All of my in-laws own enormous HDTVs and none of them own blu-ray players and most of them still buy, not rent, DVDs. I've given them demonstrations on my blu-ray, but they don't care. A couple months ago I had to convince my Dad to buy a blu-ray player to go with his new TV, but I don't know that he's hooked it up yet. And Richard's demographic is children. My children just learned to use our blu-ray player, but still accidentally put in the DVD that comes with the blu-ray and don't ask me to change it. They don't know the difference. Point is, if it saves one cent to only make DVDs for children's films, I understand why they wouldn't bother to spend more money on a blu-ray release. My in-laws will buy my kids the DVD of "Against the Wild 2" before a blu-ray. That said, I would have liked to check it out on blu-ray on my projector :)

I'm doing a small documentary on a filmmaker and a couple of themes in the movie are the questions of whether filmmakers work more on instinct or on logic and whether or not artistic ability is fair. If you want to be a singer, but you don't have an ear for pitch? Sorry. If you want to be a professional basketball player, but you're only 5'2"... sorry. Watching David Lynch in that clip is watching a director working off his instinct guided by years of experience and learning... or maybe with him it's 100% instinct :)

I criticize certain things about people too, and I don't always do it to their face, so I'm judging the poster of this thread as well as myself. So that's a good thing, I think.

Well, I directed a small feature when I was 28 and everybody hated it, so I guess there's an argument to be made that some people involved in film production shouldn't try to direct feature films at all. Unfortunately for me, there's a huge difference between making a movie and making a good movie. And I know sound designers that get to sit in their house and come up with all sorts of crazy stuff and get paid well for it. It's a pretty awesome job.
