  1. Hi, cosmicar i think you'll find is a c-mount cctv lens with manual aperature, designed for use with cctv/security cameras. Possibly ok optically around f5.6, forget it around f2.0. If you intend to use such a lens on a beaulieu/bolex be carefull the c-mount thread is longer than switar, angenieux and schneider primes. May force the turret away from the camera body. Suspect that other make is also a cctv lens, not really designed for 8/16mm camera applications. Andy
  2. torch or flashlight, we call them torches over here in the uk!!!!!! Looking at the front element, i usually shine the flashlight on the rear element looking thru the lens at full zoom, then vise versa. Best way i found of finding fungus on the inner elements, requires a keen eye to spot a thin layer of haze, but a known clean lens as referrence is a good guide. Andy
  3. Beaulieus, take both lenses off the camera, hold them up to the lite, make sure there is no haze or fungus within the lenses. I usually shine a torch into the lens. Make sure both cameras have the 85 filter in place, if missing sometimes means cameras have been messed with. Make sure the viewfinder is clear and bright and not hazy. Check the small screw heads under the viewfinder are not burred. If they are burred someones been inside the camera. If the beaulieus look clean and run ok then you could have a bargin. If they appear to have been messed with, save your cash and put to a guaranteed working unit. Make sure you see the cameras run at all speeds up to 25fps, best not to run a camera up to 70fps without a cartridge inside. I have found the biggest problem with beaulieus i have purchased and seen is a hazy viewfinder and muck/haze/fungus on the inner elements of the interchangeable lens. Andy
  4. your stuck with auto exposure only with the canon 310xl, but you can over expose the auto by 2 stops by lifting that red thing up above the lite sensor, or if you use a 0.3 ND filter you can over expose the auto by one stop. No manual exp on the 310xl.
  5. first line of the my post should read, ''us super 8 users'', i will learn to spell one day!!!!!!! Andy thanks for the info filmfreund sidetracking a bit, just received the first issue of ''smallformat'', in a word ''superb'' cannot wait till the next issue....
  6. Please, please, please can someone advise up super 8 k40 users how long we have before the Swiss lab stops processing k40. Do we have until the end of 2006 or may/june 2006. If we have until December 2006 i will buy ( if i can get hold of any stocks, as kodak uk have run out) another 50 rolls. Thanks Andy
  7. Further to my previous comments, projected recent footage thru a bauer t610 and noris 342 projectors. Leicina special yields the steadiest images followed by the canons, beaulieu 7008. Must point out my current leicina is a mint example with hardly any use, looks almost brand new. My previous special was more jittery probably had a hard life!!!! All footage recently shot with 3/2006 k40 bolex ds-8 yeilds the best image quality with k25 and prime lenses. Andy
  8. Hi, canon 1014xls does not have auto focus!!!!!!!!, if you mean the zoom does not work make sure the switch by the 'W' and 'T' buttons is set to either 'L' or 'H' when the switch is set to 'M' this means manual zooming only possible. Only canon 310xlaf, 310xlaf-s and 514xlaf-s models offered auto focus. Andy
  9. Hello, canon 814/1014xls and leicina special give me steadier images than my late canon ds-8 and the current bolex ds-8. Beaulieu 7008 not as steady as the canon and leicina. Outed the canon ds-8 as the image quality was poor compared to the bolex primes. Sadly due to the slight unsteadiness of the bolex which is only noticable locked on a tripod, the camera is used for home movies/baby on lawn stuff. Once my 26 rolls of k25 are used up thats me finished with ds-8. I was advised by a member of another forum that ''to achieve rock steady images on a converted bolex, internal parts require changing. By changeing just the gate/sprockets each 5 or 6th frame becomes out of alignment, thus the impression of jitter''!!!. ''A proper din converted bolex costs around 3000 euro''. The guy who can convert a bolex is.... Ruedi Muster Film & Fernsehtechnik 2545 Selzach Phone: ++41 (0) 32 641 10 46 Fax: ++41 (0) 32 641 10 59 He only speaks German. I would of invested in a proper conversion if k25 was still made, which is the only reason i use the format. Used some ds-8 k40 thru the canon ds-8, images on the canon 814xls were just as sharp/stable and yeilded better colour saturation. On the whole the super 8 cartridge is just as good as my experiances with double super 8 with regards steadiness. The only exception is image quality, using a switar 5.5mm lens on the bolex and k25 filmstock, imo you get unsurpassed super 8 image quality. Andy
  10. Hi, the fastest c-mount lens i have used is an angenieux 25mm f0.95, gave good results. You could look out for schneider cine xenon lenses, only f1.4 though. Or a zeiss 9.5,12,16 or 25mm in arri bayonet mount and use a c-mount converter, these are f1.2. You may get away with f1.4 glass and use 7218 stock, i have been stunned with the stocks low lite capabilities.
  11. How about 16mm ( 16mm k64????, i can dream cant i ) Andy
  12. John_P_Pytlak Posted Today, 02:28 AM Kodak has more VISION2 stocks on the way, along with some unexpected but pleasant surprises. Still investing in film research and development for motion-picture products. KODACHROME 25 AND SUPER 8 K40???????????????????? Andy
  13. Matt, i quite agree with your comments, my concern is a question of longevity, will it last as long as kodachrome. BTW, the only stock that came close to k40, well actually performs k40 is double super 8 k25. I am afraid it blows k40 away. ( bolex h8, 12.5mm prime and k25, stunning super 8 images). i spent a pile of money on k25 ds-8, just hope kodak can process the stuff in 18months time. Andy
  14. Look out for a noris 110,332,342 and 410 machines, superb projectors, very underated, picked up a stereo 342 machine for just 60 euros. Agfa LS1 and LS2 projectors are reliable and tend to be overlooked too ( make sure drive belt is ok before purchase). Eumig 810d hqs ( dual guage ), built like a tank, sometimes run slow, easy repair by cleaning rubber disk thingy inside projector. Bauer T82,T183,T502,T525,T610 superb projectors, amazingly quiet in operation, expensive though. Elmo ST160 and ST180, tend to be pricey too. Dont forget your camera lens is only as good as your projector lens. Quality projector lenses on noris and bauer machines are schneider f1.1 11-30, schneider f1.3 12-30. Andy
  15. true John, but at present i have a choice, in reasonable light to full sun, given the choice, kodachrome will always be my first choice, even if the stock is not the greatest for t/k ing. Luckily i am not giving up stunning quality as we still have k40 and i have a few rolls of k25 left too. BTW, also transferred at the same time two rolls of 7205, photographed on a dull evening two weeks ago at 8pm, around T2.8. this too gave staggering results. Thanks for the reply. Andy
  16. me interested in 50d, only after super 8 k40 bites the dust. Would use neg 8 and 16mm stock a lot more if i knew in 50years time the images will still be there. Put me down though for 50 cartridges of 50d. Andy
  17. all my moviechrome 40 and 160 footage from the early 80s have emulsion fungus, k40 from the same era is perfect. A friends collection of films from the mid 80s that were originated on agfa and dixons film stocks have gone the same way. Be very carefull not to record something that cannot easily be re-shot on your moviechrome stock. I would put the cost of processing towards glorious kodachrome instead and bin the moviechrome 40. Andy
  18. Hello again, yes i once owned a bauer 715 aswell. Tended to under expose in auto mode, image stability excellent, well made camera, great images in good lite, very reliable, owned it for around 4 months before selling it for £20.00 ( i am too honest ). Think i got an ebay lemon, as in low lite it lost all sharpness, 99% sure the back focus was out. Seem to recall, due to the design of the handgrip the camera wouldn't sit on a sachtler 18p tripod head. Have messed with other bauers, 709 and c700xlm, all as reliable as the canon, lenses good but not as good as the canon and beaulieus. Sold them all in favour of previously mentioned cameras. Here's one to buy if you see one going cheap, a zeiss ikon moviflex ms8, super 8 camera with zeiss vario sonnar 9-36 f1.9 lens, 18 and 24fps, awfull manual exposure, a real point and shoot camera. But the image quality has to be seen to be believed, yes imo completely outstrips the canon 1014xls, sharp as a tack even wide open!!!!! Camera dates from around the late 60s early 70s.
  19. beaulieu 5008, the multispeed is the better option, image quality thru the 6-70 lens was stunning, again auto exp not as good as canon. Image stablility even thru my fully service one was not as good as the 4008,7008 and canon cameras. Also used the earlier 5008 with two running speeds, again image stability was not as good, i could of been just unlucky with either of the cameras or iffy cartridges. 5008 is a real solid camera. I found trying to pull focus at full zoom on both the 4008 and 5008 a bit difficult, the images tend to wobble due a large zoom lens ( 6-70 and 6-80 lens) being secured to the camera via the c-mount. A lens support would of been usefull. Pulling focus on the canon and leicina is no problem. Later cameras such as the 7008 use a larger mount, but also maintaining the c-mount. The 5008,7008 cameras feel like using say an R16. If you can find the two speed 5008 with 6-80 lens ( T-Stops instead of f-stops!!!!! on a super 8 camera.) in full working order, no muck on the inner elements of the lens with a warranty, consider it, that 6-80 angenieux lens is absolutely superb. Some say the best super 8 zoom ever made. Summing up, i like the solid feel of the 5008, felt like using a 16mm camera like an R16, reliability was good, image stability was good but not excellent, cannot remember the focussing screen, if it were awfull i would of remembered.
  20. given your clever way with words John, does this really mean that k40 is doomed in the not to distant future????????????Andy
  21. OK, Beaulieu 4008 not the best camera imo for tripod work, horrible 1/87th shutter speed, probably more reliable and less parts to go wrong than 6008,7008 range of cameras. Beaulieu 6008/7008, wonderfull images via a correctly set up/collimated lens. My advice is if you buy a beaulieu get the lens checked out, make sure the lens is adjusted to the camera. Make sure there is no haze or dust on any of the elements within the lens. Camera slightly quieter than 814/1014xls cameras, sharper images when the lens is wide open compared to the canon. 7008s has the better ground glass focussing screen compared to the 6008s. Comparing the canon and beaulieu 7008, image stability is about the same, auto exposure is a bit slow with the beaulieu, beaulieu lens has a proper iris. Now always grab my leicina special first, beaulieu second and canon third. If you have the money then by a beaulieu 7008 avoiding the 7-56 ( chinon made lens) then have the camera serviced unless purchased with a warranty. A beaulieu is going to cost a lot more than the canon. I get better images with my beaulieu compared to my canon cameras and will always reach for the canon last. Think you'll find all the top cameras that were produced in later years were sound cameras, only the bauer c900xl from around 1982 which was a silent model springs to mind as an exception. Rewinding back to the beaulieu, wot i dont like is when you use the camera with a remote switch the camera is always in a kind of standby mode, draining the battery. The canon only drains the battery in the same mode whilst running or when lightly depressing the trigger release. So for a lot more money the beaulieu is going to give you slightly better image quality, 4fps,56fps, and interchangeable lenses.

  23. Hello, please can anybody answer a few questions, Is the lab in Switzerland closing for 16 and 35mm k14 processing??? if so when? Why did kodak ditch k25 and keep k40 ( i assumed k40 was kept due to high super 8 sales of the product) as i find it hard to believe 16mm k40 is more popular than k25. Has kodachrome got a future, will it still be available in say two years time? My last question, when is the last date that i can get super 8 k40 processed at Switzerland. Thankyou for any replies. Andy
  24. But how long before Switzerland stops processing ds-8, 16mm and k64. What i cannot understand is why on earth kodak killed k25, i just cannot believe more people shoot 16mm k40 to warrant its existance, the stock has only just become available in ds-8 because of the k25 demise. So why not keep k25 in 35mm,16 and ds-8 and ditch k40???????
