  1. Please can someone explain why all those films were tungsten, why was there no daylight based filmstocks in the above list except 5247. I dont understand why even today people shoot tungsten films in daylight when JP always says match the stock to the light source.
  2. Thanks S 8 Booster, will try and locate bonum spools, i am afraid the link is no use, appears they may have stop supplying them. Andy
  3. Hi, i am looking for the best make of super 8 reels and cans, i have reels/cans by GEPE, POSSO, HAMA and PHOTAX. Over the years the photax have lost the ability to auto take up, also they are no longer made. I wish to have all the same make of reels and cans. Gepe cans have a kind of air event on them, is this a good idea?, Gepe also seems to the highest quality from the above list. Please can anyone advise me on a high quality reel and can. Also, does anyone make a 100 ft super 8 reel/can. Thanks, Andy
  4. Hi, if your talking 16mm, 16mm k40 yeilds stunning reds, kodachrome also offers better archival stability and should require less colour correction in 50 years time compared to neg.
  5. Hi, your only chance in this lifetime to obtain some 400ft rolls of 16mm k25 is probably ebay. They do show up occassionally, but be warned, you will be up against me on the bidding. <_< Sadly, some very clever person in kodak decided to kill k25 in favour of the poorer quality k40 around 3-4 years ago, last available 16mm k25 has an exp date of around 5/2003. It would be fantastic if k64 could be made in 400ft 16mm lengths, i would buy 50 straight away. i wonder what the minimum order would be? Andy

Hi, apart from the usual iris check etc, make absolute sure the claw is operational, make sure the claw moves up and down. I think the thing that turns the centre of the cartridge within the camera still works ok, despite the claw not working, but i cant quite remember. Get a test film thru the camera asap. The only downside to these great cameras, infact all the braun 4080,4056,6080 etc series of camera is a stupid drive belt within the camera that stretches over time, causing the claw to stop working. Its a pig to replace btw.
  7. Hi, for a start, is the battery attached to the camera? can the battery be unscrewed from the camera. I have found with the beaulieu 2008 and 4008 cameras that batteries left on the camera for a number of years cause problems. Gases from the battery tend to mist/haze/fog up the viewfinder. So first check the viewfinder is clear. Next unscrew the small start plunger under the lens, then unscrew the lens, shinning a torch into the lens from the front, then rear element check there is no haze/fog/fungus on any of the elements within the zoom lens. The 2008 runs on 4.8 volts, a refurb battery will probably cost more than the camera, then you will need a charger. The camera dates from the 60s, so it may need a service. I owned a 2008 many years ago, i cannot remember if theres an inbulit wratten filter, if there is that could be in poor health. Probably cheaper to put the cash towards a known working camera. Andy

Not wishing to dampen your spirits, i just hope that horrible drive belt within the camera is in good condition. Make sure your claw works ok on receipt of the camera. Andy
  9. The bauer S105 is a chinon camera rebadged, sticking my neck out here, no the S105 will not meter the 64t correctly. found this on a google search http://www.film.project-consultant.de/html...4_new_cams.html http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Super_8_EK..._in_old_cameras Andy
  10. Yes your camera will expose k40 ok, i assume it has auto exposure? according to my book on movie cameras it has a fixed focus lens, keep your subject at least 5ft from the lens in poor light. With the price of k40 going thru the roof on ebay and most stockist sold out perhaps your best option is looking for a cheap camera that can expose the new 64t ok.
  11. your using long outdated filmstock, i think it requires special processing, your paying a premium on the processing as i doubt the lab handles many e160 cartridges these days. If you can find some use k40, i'm not sure if your camera can handle the new 64t. If you require the film to be projected, then your best option is look for a camera that can handle the new 64t. Because kodak killed k40, overnite it has rendered a lot of super 8 cameras useless, why couldnt they give us an ektachrome 40.
  12. i wonder if leitz opted for the schneider as the quality of the mechanics within the zoom were better than those springs with the 6-80 lens. I was advised some years ago to avoid angenieux lenses with springs inside the lens. Over time the springs weaken and dont pull the moving element back uniformly ( any truth in that? ). I notice canon lenses have springs. Schneider optics dont have springs, they appear to be a much better constructed internally. The quality of images thru my 6-80 ( recently serviced ) is stunning. i would rate the 6-66,6-70 and 6-80 as the best zooms for the super 8 format, the 6-80 being the only true professional lens as the aperature is measured in T-Stops.
  13. Hi, with 25 rolls of k25 double super 8 to my name, super 8 k40 gone, now is the time to use my stock pile of ds-8 film. My bolex ds-8 yeilds slight unsteady images. I am in the market for a bolex ds-8 camera, prefer a flat base h8rx. The camera must be in full working order and yeild rock solid images. Can anyone help?? Andy

    1014 xls

yeh, don't overlook the 814xls, only major spec missing is the lap dissolve. If you are finding it hard to stretch to the 1014xls price tag, go for the 814xls. In fact, why not opt for the 814xls??????
  15. Beaulieu 6008 range sit better on a tripod than the 4008s horrible little handgrip. Also 4008 has 1/87th sec shutter which makes moving subjects look a little stroby ( i think thats how you spell stroby?). The schneider 6-66 lens fitted to my late 4008 zm2 gave incredibly sharp images, even wide open at 1.8. I am under the impression it was the best super 8 zoom ever made, followed by the 6-80 angenieux. The 6-80 lens, i think, is the only super 8 zoom that the iris is measured in T-Stops intstead of F-Stops. The 6-70 is also a superb lens. The difference with my 6-80 and 6-66 ( 6-66 on the leicina) lenses is colour balance, the schneider tends to be on the cold side, while the angenieux has a warm colour balance to it. The 6-80 makes k40 look stunning, even on grubby days. i would say the 6-66 has the very slight edge on sharpness. I would advise getting the 6008/7008 range with 6-70, 6-66 or 6-80 lenses, putting cash aside to have the camera serviced.

    1014 xls

Hi, canon 1014xls dates from 1979-83, more modern optics/electronics than the 1014e. Think the 1014e dates from 1973ish to 78ish. Canon 1014xls is easier to hand hold imo. I would go for the 1014xls.
  17. Hi, dont waiste time and any money on moviechrome 40 or 160 stock, in a word its crap. All my 1982-3 footage on moviechrome stock is unwatchable due to emulsion fungus. I have seen images from 1986-7-8 from another two collections filmed on moviechrome, this too has suffered emulsion fungus. All my k40 and E160 images from the same era are perfect. Stick with kodak stock. Despite me always moaning about the demise of k25, kodak will always be my first choice of filmstock.
  18. Thankyou for the kind offer JK. I am hoping that all filming is to be done outside the church where camera noise doesn't matter. The footage will be silent, friend does not require sound. Sold my canon 1014xls, so now down to the beaulieu 6008,7008, leicina special, reluctant to use the 814xls due to the back focus problems in low light. Anyone use there leicina special on auto iris?????? Would love to shoot the whole wedding using the 10mm cinegon, but i dont think its practicle. BTW, seen a few comments regarding leicina special camera noise, mine is fairly quiet, around the same noise levels as the 814xls and beaulieus. All the previous family weddings have been shot on a 1014xls as its a great run and gun camera, my only concern with the beaulieus and leicina is no aperature readout in the viewfinder, probably one of the only plus points to the canon 814xls. Heres my thoughts....... Canon 814xls... soft images in low light, able to shoot more footage, better run/gun camera Beaulieu/leicina.... know i will get more usable footage, also a much sharper image, especially in low lite, need to work a little harder with the cameras compared than the no thinking canon 814xls. i am being swayed to the 7008s with 6-80 lens, however the jury's still out. Thanks to all the replies. Andy
  19. Is a rex3 flat or round base, if flat base and the camera yields rock steady images thats a great price. Andy
  20. How much is the pinhole camera going for??????. I paid £500.00 for my jittery ebay lemon!!!!!!!
  21. Toatally agree with you Alan on all your comments. My canon ds-8 was steadier than my current beaulieu 7008, though my 6008 is a lot steadier than the 7008. Not much difference with the canon ds-8 and leicina special as regards steadiness, in fact i think my special is steadier!!!. Certainly k40 images are miles ahead in term of contrast, saturation and sharpness thru the leicina compared to the canon ds-8 lens. I only went for the ds-8 format as all 16mm k25 stocks became exhausted. Luckily i still have 25 rolls of k25 ds-8 in the fridge. After messing with canon and bolex ds-8 cameras, i decided to out the canon as i wasn't getting the very best image sharpness/contrast/saturation thru the canon. I would avoid the ds-8 format unless you get a proper bolex ds-8 conversion by this chap http://www.super8site.com/fanzine/aktuell/r_muster.shtml Andy
  22. Hi, have used a cooke kinetal 25mm T2 and schnieder 25mm f1.4 on my late arri-m. I found the schneider to be sharper than the cooke. The cooke glass was warmer, tended to use the cooke on dull days. I found ( shooting on reversal) you cannot intercut material shot on the same day with both lenses as the colour balance was very noticable. My recommendation is the schneider glass.
  23. Hi, (sorry canon ds-8 users) avoid the canon ds-8, crap glass when compared to bolex primes on a bolex ds-8 conversion. I have owned two canon ds-8, the glass is nowhere as good as say the 1014xls optics. K40 thru the canon ds-8 looked crap ( thats cos k40 is a crap stock compared to k25). I have messed with a lot of super 8 cameras and two ds-8 cameras. The sharpest images i have ever seen in the super 8 format were thru a bolex ds-8 with switar primes and k25 film. With the demise of ds-8 k40 soon, and no colour stocks on the horizon, avoid the ds-8 format. And dont touch the canon. Buy a mint leicina special instead.
  24. Hi, my previous coments about the 5,6,7 frame were drawn from my poor memory, the chap did tell my exactly what caused a JK conversion to jitter. I seem to recall internal parts required replacing, not just the spocket, claw and gate parts. My leicina special gives much steadier images than the bolex.
  25. Hi, my tail of woe. Purchased a bolex ds-8 on ebay in mint condition. First reel yeilded jittery images so did the second. Well after the third visit to JK cameras, the jitter was resolved. However the images are still not as stable as the super 8 cartridge. I spend around £1800.00 in all on the camera shipping from the uk to the USA and back etc, and still super 8 gives steadier images. This was my second bolex, the first camera also yeilded slight unsteady images. Now i use the bolex for hand held home movies of the family only, you dont notice the unsteady registration when shooting hand held. The images the bolex produces apart from the unsteadiness are amazing, i really think the image quality on k25 is unsurpassed in the super 8 format, of course thats until kodak give us a better stock that can match k25. Lenses are a problem on the bolex, you can only use a couple of zooms as well as the 5.5, 12.5 and 36mm switar. My advice is, by a bolex ds-8 with a full money back warranty or dont touch it. The other concern is, how much longer will the format survive. You can still get ds-8 k40, but i doubt for much longer. I only got into the format purely so i could use k25, as there were still stocks around till around 12months ago, i personally would avoid the format. I was in correspondence with a guy from Germany who advised me that a bolex H8 to DS-8 conversion is possible but requires a lot of internal work, i seem to recall the sum of 3000 euros being quoted. This conversion would yeild rock solid images as a JK conversion causes every 5,6 or 7 frame to be out of alignment, thus causing unsteady images. Well if your still awake heres the JK link. http://www.jkcamera.com/bolex_h16_rex.htm
